New York Fashion Week: Earth Pledge Future Fashion

Filed under: Runway Trends, Events: On the Scene, Style in the News, Style for a Cause, Fashion Week

earth pledgeFashion Week hasn't officially started but the runway shows have already begun. Fashionistas, celebrities, models, and designers all gathered at Gotham Hall to be a part of the Earth Pledge Future Fashion show.

The Future Fashion show was a mash-up of 30 different looks from 30 well known designers (Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein, DVF ... just to name a few) who were all supporting the initiative to educate and demonstrate that being "green" can be fashionable too. All of the fashions in the show were made of sustainable materials like organic cotton, organic wool, corn fibers, recycled fabrics, natural dyes, and other eco-friendly goods.

Walking into a show that is all about being "green", I really didn't know what to expect. Would there be a floor covered in hay or some other hideous "granola" decor?

No, no granola in sight.

What I got was a lavish venue that gave these eco-fashions an incredibly posh backdrop. The one piece of "granola" there was the wooden runway, which was very rugged looking, kind of like they just laid a couple of trees on the ground. The rugged look was nice but proved to be dangerous, as nearly every model stumbled on the catwalk.

The crowd wasn't very granola either, it was the standard fashion crowd --- air kisses and all. There weren't as many celebrities as I had hoped for but a few of my favorites did make an appearance including Nigel Barker from America's Next Top Model, Jack from Project Runway, and Lauren Bush.

And we can't forget about the clothes ... it was a fashion show after all. The clothes were great; it was nice how even though it was a mash-up of 30 different designers the clothing all flowed together in harmony. There were lots of whites and beiges (un dyed materials) and interesting design treatments to the fabrics like huge bows and ruffles.

Once the show wrapped Pure & Natural (one of the shows sponsors) passed out goody bags filled with eco-friendly bath products, scented candles, and a CD from the show. After a long fashion filled day like today a hot eco-friendly bath sounds just about right.
