Earth Day Round-up

Earth from the apollo space craftThe fashion industry is promoting guilt-free shopping today in honor of Earth Day. Designers really want you to reduce your eco-footprint by purchasing their various wares. (Aww, isn't that sweet?) Here's how:

  • Target's first eco-friendly designer collaboration, Loomstate for Target, has hit stores just in time for you to pull together your edgy, organic-cotton look for Earth Day fetes.

  • Looking to add to your monogrammed luggage set? If you shop online at Louis Vuitton today, the luxury retailer will donate 15% of all purchases on their US website to The Climate Project. FYI, The Climate Project is an organization founded by Al Gore, who also helped invent the internet. (How's that for synergy?)

  • Pretty Little Thing NYC is selling a globe necklace to commemorate the planet's special day. The rest of the year, the globe revolves around you ... er, your neck. A portion of the proceeds from these babies are going to The Wilderness Society.

  • Did you know Donna Karan is a total natural wellness hippie? Check out this video of Donna explaining some of the techniques and benefits of holistic medicine and her new project Urban Zen. BTW, she's designed a bunch of awesome tees that benefit charity, available exclusively at Tonic.

  • Keds has revamped their classic kicks for Earth Day. Not only are their Green Label shoes made of organic cotton and recycled rubber, but for each pair sold, Keds plants a tree. Friday is Arbor Day people!

  • Anthopologie hooked up with Edun (the brainchild of Bono's wife Ali Hewson) for a line of Bee Tees. These 100% organic tees will bring awareness to the alarming disappearance of honeybees. All while making you look fashionable and socially-conscious, of course.

  • Don't throw out your old cosmetic containers. Origins has teamed up with Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford to launch a cosmetics recycling program. All Origins counters (even the ones inside department stores) will accept empty cosmetic containers from any brand.

Dress like Dr. Jones

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

Good news for those of us who like to dress like a loose-cannon archaeologist who just got back from a trek through the African Savannah: the safari look is back. Ok, maybe it never quite left, but with the latest installment of the Indiana Jones movies hitting the big screen, safari fashion is roaring back into full force.

Designers are turning out all kinds of safari-inspired designs, decked out with all the unnecessary pockets, straps, and belt loops for the safari gadgets that you probably won't ever carry. Still, the look is rugged, military and functional -- 3 things that make you feel like a badass who can get through any kind of dangerous, life or death situation. Shouldn't fashion inspire confidence? Plus, we like any style that allows us to successfully incorporate a bull whip.

What does your t-shirt say about you?

T-shirts have come a long way from the days of James Dean and his white crewneck. Twenty years ago, t-shirts were what people wore on weekends or at home, but now, designer t-shirts are status symbols. With the right design, the right logo and the right label, you can let people know a lot about you without saying a word.

Take Edun's t-shirt with a Rainier Maria Rilke poem screen printed on it. This t-shirt implies that the wearer is educated enough to recognize the name and the work of the German poet. The wearer of this shirt thinks she's smart, and she wants you to think she is. too.

And my t-shirt? Well, today, I'm wearing a plain black stretch t-shirt that I purchased from the Gap outlet back in 1997. I suppose the slightly tight black shirt suggests I'm urbane, but simple. But, given that the shirt is from 1997, I'm also frugal, even cheap to the point of fault. (Guilty as charged.)

Funny how something so simple can say so much? What does your t-shirt say about you?
