Confirmed: J-Lo's still a diva

Apparently Jennifer Lopez' "people," no longer allow her to be honest. She gave an interview with Elle Magazine and really opened up, but the original was pulled from the print version because her rep asked if she could redo it. Who knows if this was actually J-Lo's decision or her manager's. Fortunately, everything makes it on to the internet these days anyways.

Naomi Campbell: I'm not a supermodel

We've got to give it to Naomi Campbell. The icon is never for a dull moment.

In the last six months alone, she's been arrested, banned from an airport, tapped to front Yves Saint Laurent's fall ad campaign, and managed to land a guest role on the season finale of Ugly Betty.

After three stints of rehab, a string of unsuccessful movies, and a line of leggings, Lindsay Lohan will now be turning towards television in an effort to revive her lagging career.

Project Runway: Marie Claire in. Elle out?

Filed under: Style in the News

And the drama never stops over at the Project Runway camp.

It seems like every week we are inundated with more stories of hirings, firings, and betrayals from the former Bravo TV project.

The latest juicy rumor comes courtesy of WWD:

Apparently, Marie Claire, who is published by Hearst, wants to be the mag to publish Project Runways fashion spreads once the show's contract with Elle magazine expires after this upcoming fifth season.

However, a spokeswoman for Marie Claire would beg to differ, saying: "We think 'Project Runway' is a fantastic show, but to speculate at this point beyond season five would be, as [season four winner] Christian Siriano says, 'A hot mess!'"

No, boo. The switch from Bravo to Lifetime, which your parent company owns, was a "hot mess." But that's why we can't get enough of this little soap opera. Until tomorrow...

Elle magazine takes over Ugly Betty

And the love affair between Ugly Betty and Elle continues to flourish.

Today, WWD reports
that Elle magazine's editor-in-chief Robbie Myers and creative director Joe Zee will be appearing the finale episode of Ugly Betty this season alongside supermodel Naomi Campbell, which depicts a charity softball game between Elle and Mode magazine. Campbell will play Elle's designated hitter.

On the scene: $91,000 for a naked French lady

Filed under: Style in the News

We have no idea why anyone would pay $91,000 just to see Nicolas Sarkozy's supermodel wife posing sans clothing, but that's what some Chinese guy paid to own a photo of her in the buff. Oh yeah, it's art. Sure dude. [Guardian]

Elle auctions off designer water bottles for the planet

Filed under: Style in the News, Style for a Cause

Elle magazine has teamed up with eco-crusader Laurie David to auction off some Sigg aluminum water bottles decorated by some of fashion's elite designers. Diane von Furstenberg, Kenneth Cole, Stella McCartney and others have decked out each bottle with their own unique doodles and slogans. They even allowed Donna Karan to participate, even though she hates bunnies.

I don't know what they used to apply their designs, hopefully something that doesn't smear -- since I imagine these things will garner some pretty high prices. The auction is being launched in conjunction with Elle's 3rd annual Green Issue, and the proceeds will go to David's stopglobalwarming.org -- bidding starts on April 17.

Elle magazine says good-bye to Gilles Bensimon?

Filed under: Style in the News

Like any viewer who is addicted to America's Next Top Model, I can tell you that Gilles Bensimon is the famed fashion photographer who put Tyra Banks on the cover of Elle when she was just breaking into the industry. He also shoots the winner of ANTM in a fashion spread for the magazine each season as well.

Well, if the rumor WWD is reporting is indeed fact and not fiction, Miss Banks is going to have to revise her little prize speech for panel.

Apparently, Elle magazine's new creative director Joe Zee is finally ending the relationship between the mag and legendary photographer -- who has shot the covers of Elle for the past 20 years.

Sources tell WWD that Bensimon may shoot a couple more covers before his contract expires in December, but this glossy unity is pretty much done-zo.

Proof:

Zee hired Carter Smith to shoot Natalie Portman for April's issue and Tom Munro just came back from Los Angelas after snapping Madonna for the May cover.

Sad, but you can't keep a good man down for long. Bensimon's advertising campaigns for Sears, Kmart, J.C. Penney, and Iconix are breaking into fashion magazines this spring.

It was real while it lasted.

Musical fashion, say it ain't so

Elle New York Street FashionThose New Yorkers are so crazy aren't they? Sometimes crazy fashions can be pardoned because they are being sported by "New Yorkers". I think that's just crap. What are New Yorkers the new Harojuki girls? Oh please, gimme a break.

Here is an example of a New York "fashionista" flexing her crazy muscles in an attempt to sport her favorite musical instrument, a tambourine, as a necklace. The results are terrifying.

Even if she took off the tambourine the outfit is still pretty messy. Unless of course she is heading to a "casual prom." Wait, maybe that's what happened she is a "rockin" tambourine player who got a gig at a high school prom and she got her purse stolen on the way. That's why her instrument is hanging around her neck!

Whew ... glad there was a clear explanation for that fashion nightmare.

Lindsay Lohan ditched by Louis Vuitton

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Will she ever work again? It must be hard to have a career when you spend all your time acting like a coked-out and/or drunken lunatic.

No one understands that better than Lindsay Lohan, the celebrat who, after her most-recent DUI arrest, has seen potential movie roles yanked out from under her, and may now have missed her shot at being the face of Louis Vuitton.

But apparently Lohan's recent foray into excessive intoxication is only the icing on the cake. Two months ago Vuitton sent the actress some clothes to wear during a shoot for Elle (the magazine has posted amazing outtakes from the shoot on its Web site). Unfortunately for all involved, Lindsay decided she'd steal them.

Why you would steal clothing when you're worth tens of millions of dollars is beyond me -- but, if her behavior is any indication, maybe Lindsay is trying to destroy her career. If so, she's certainly succeeding.

Runway meets Sesame Street

Every month or so I like to review my ABC's, you know so I don't forget. No, not those ABC's (fashionistas really aren't that dumb), I was reviewing Elle's Runway ABC's. This go round letter "A" was for Anime, which sounded adorable and fun, until I clicked on the first image to see that a gothic version of Big Bird has strapped on a pair of heels and stomped the runway.

Big Bird came from Giles Deacon's 2007 ready-to-wear collection. The collection looked normal for the most part, all pretty wearable stuff, with the exception of that big furry monster. I can't even begin to imagine why that "outfit" was created, perhaps it was punishment for a model who actually ate before the runway show. Gasp, but I digress.

The rest of the anime lesson was as expected; fun colors and pattens, even some cartoons characters-- such as Jeremy Scott's war-ready Care Bear. If you want to master the anime look yourself this summer try pairing unusual color combinations with funky prints such as stars or lightening bolts, or just raid your little sister's closet for some cartoon print tops.

Photoshop much?

Here is the thing about Photoshop -- we all know it exists but we are typically fooled by it and are constantly obsessing over how we want to look like "that." Sad ,but true. Every so often the Photoshop gods and goddesses get a little pixel happy and they aren't fooling anyone. In fact, they are just plain insulting to us loyal readers and to the celebrity being photographed.

Photoshop insult of the month is Elle magazine featuring a "thin" Kelly Clarkson on the cover. When the issue of Elle arrived in my mailbox I wasn't even sure who it was. At first I said to myself, "Why is Mandy Moore on the cover again, she was just on two months ago?" Then I said, "WTF, is that Kelly Clarkson?! I am not reading this trash." Unfortunately, I had to open the magazine for the sake of this blog post. As anticipated, the whole spread is pretty pathetic.

C'mon, this isn't even remotely convincing. Not only did we just see big Kel stomping around the American Idol Finale stage barefoot and plump, but she has been all over the tabloids (also looking plump) acting like a total diva. So Elle, if you are listening, better luck next time -- either show 'em big or just get 'em small.

Guess who eats the LEAST during fashion week?

Filed under: Runway Trends, Events: On the Scene, Style in the News, Men

fashion food diaryBased on all the news that flies around the media and internet about super skinny models and their being banned from runways for low BMIs, you'd think that of the four people that New York magazine followed during fashion week -- a model, a male model/personal trainer, a fashion show producer, and a magazine editor -- the model would be the one who ate the least.

Think again.

New York magazine reported the food diaries of the four people and you'll be surprised to find out that it was Anne Slowey, Fashion-News Director and Accessories Editor for Elle Magazine who ate the least! Anne ate all of a full course of vitamins every morning for breakfast, water all day, and to be quite honest, the amount of actual food she ate over the course of three days was very very little. A plate of eggs here, a salad there.

Are we going to have to ban fashion editors from Fashion Week soon, too?
