Where to put your winter accessories

Filed under: Haute Home, Accessories, Clothing

Personally, I think that coat racks are cool -- they're functional, traditional, and they show off your collection of awesome winter coats and hats. They keep all your stuff in the same place so you're not looking around for that stupid scarf for 10 minutes before you can leave the house.

Yet, some people don't like the look of a freestanding artificial tree in their apartment. They want something that's more compact and stylish. That's the idea behind AlissaMT's awesome Tree Hooked coat hooks. They can hold all your junk while still looking cool -- and you can order them in either black or silver.

I say they would look good in pairs -- or even better, deck a whole wall out with coat hook forest motif. Of course, that would require a lot of drilling.

How to choose a belt buckle

When it comes to accessories, it' hard to beat the belt buckle -- it's the codpiece of our time. At least that's what I heard on some stupid TV show. Choosing the right belt buckle is an important decision, one that you should put some serious thought into. The buckle can tie your whole ensemble together and it can say a lot about you. Are you a firearms enthusiast, or an hipster fashion guru? There are even belt buckles that double as a smoking apparatus, but they look pretty stupid.

We've all seen the belt buckle done the wrong way. Lot's of people think they can just snap it on their belt and they're ready to go. To truly master the modern codpiece, you've got to think about the big picture. Think seamless integration.

Most belt buckles stand out by design. So, as with any conspicuous fashion item, the key is to display some taste and subtlety in your choice. Complementing the rest of your outfit with a design that's not over the top. Think of it like the keystone of you outfit, not just the focal point.

For when love cuts you deep

Now there's a necklace for everyone who understands the pain and suffering of true love!

This Razorblade Necklace is the latest from Elsewares -- those edgy, angsty Brooklyn designers who have a habit of finding the dark side in everything. They say this piece is the perfect replacement for flowers, chocolate or diamonds, and I agree -- in an Emo sort of way. Ah, the danger of love -- the passion! Love is like a rose, with thorns -- thorns that pierce your soul! Etc.

But, joking aside, it's a nice-looking necklace. Plus, the edges have been dulled, so it's not as dangerous as it looks.

So, if you're wallowing in the torturous depths of love (or just like the look), and have $110 to spend on a razorblade, you can buy the necklace here.

Street chic for your coffee table

Filed under: Haute Home, Style for a Cause

street sign coastersI remember thinking friends and acquaintances of mine "way cool" when I visited their apartments and saw stolen street signs on their walls. Naughty. Rebellious. Totally non-conformist.

I think it's also illegal.

But these Street Sign Coasters are not illegal. In fact, because they're made from street signs that have been salvaged, they're actually good, because they're being re-used to protect your gorgeous coffee table instead of sitting in a landfill somewhere. All of the coasters are handmade in Rhode Island, finished and sealed, and of course, each 4½" square is unique. A set of four is $70.

Available from Elsewares.
