Derek Lam Spring 2009

Filed under: Runway Trends, Fashion Week

Derek Lam's Spring 2009 collection offered a thoroughly modern take on American sportswear--and was one of Fashion Week's standout shows.

The 30s-via-80s silhouettes included floaty skirts and relaxed yet strong-shouldered suits. )Think Faye Dunaway in "Bonnie and Clyde" meets Jerry Hall.) Jackets and dresses featured sprinkles of sequins and metallics. And while a neutral palette dominated--Lam described the shades as "pumice, stone and terra cotta"--pops of bright citrus shades made their way down the catwalk, too.

Lam has been one of fashion's rising stars since launching his self-titled line in 2003. But in our minds, this collection cemented his status as one of America's freshest young designers.

Flash: Mr. Blackwell in critical condition

Bad news. Word is going round that actor, fashion designer, and über-critic Richard Blackwell is in the hospital today, and things are not looking so good. Apparently, he fell seriously ill on Tuesday, when he was taken to an LA area hospital and has been unconscious ever since. His partner Robert Spencer declined to give any details about which hospital was treating Blackwell, or his condition.

Richard Blackwell's career spans all from his days as a child actor to his rise to prominence as a designer with his line House of Blackwell, worn by A-listers such as Jayne Mansfield and Nancy Reagan.

Mr. Blackwell was also an innovator when it came to biting cynicism and cruel fashion commentary, so we certainly owe him a debt of gratitude. His famous "Worst Dressed" lists basically ushered in the modern era of celebrity-slamming. Awesome. They also laid the groundwork for multitudes of 'top 10' imitators from Letterman to Styledash (hey, that's us).

Vivienne Westwood does graduation gowns

Filed under: Style in the News

What did your college or high school graduation gown look like? Was it black and plain, or a color? Or did you skip the ceremony to go have a beer? Okay, maybe that was just us, but those gowns are seriously unflattering, and we had no intention of wearing it around for a day and being photographed looking like we were wearing a garbage bag. No thank you.

Fortunately, for graduates of King's College in London, they will have something a little different -- graduation capes and hoods designed by Vivienne Westwood!
