Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue

Filed under: Style in the News

Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue is online now
Bloody brilliant. We're loving Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue, now available to view online in full. We especially love the column entitled "I Hate Fashion" written by Tracie Egan of Jezebel.com. Our sentiments exactly. But wait... we also totally identify with Christopher Bollen's article "I Love Fashion." Oh fashion, how we love to hate you! The trend reports for NYC and London are spot on as well, and hilarious to boot. And who but Vice would dare to cast porn star Sasha Grey in a provocative but very clever fashion spread? (Get it? Spread?) Seriously, Vice's snarky take on all things fashion is not to be missed.

Jane magazine: Another one bites the dust

Filed under: Style in the News

Jane magazine will make a sad exit, as they have announced they are folding. The Daily has found, according to sources at Condé Nast Publications (Jane magazine's publication company), the employees of the magazine came back from a long relaxing weekend only to find they are jobless.

Ouch.

Editor in chief Brandon Holley and vice president/publisher Carlos Lamadrid are leaving the company all together. The rest of the Jane staff are welcome to interview for new positions within Condé Nast. The magazine with cease publication with the August issue, the website (www.janemag.com) will shut down as well.

Jane
was founded in September 1997 by Jane Pratt. August 8, 2005, Holley was named editor in chief. She had also been at Ellegirl (folded last July) under the same position.

I have to say I am not surprised. Jane magazine never really pulled me in like the rest of the fashion glossies. My guess is, that their lack of identity ultimately sealed their demise. Was Jane a fashion magazine, or was it a Cosmo type magazine about sex and pleasing men, or was it a health magazine? What was it? I suppose it was reaching out to "Jane" girls who wanted it all ... Which sounds nice in theory but if you are going to do it all it better be done right. I am much happier picking up a Vogue, a Fitness magazine, and a Cosmo to "get it all."

Farewell Jane magazine, you will be missed by some.

Three cheers for Kate Winslet!

Air-brushing scandals aside, I really do love Kate Winslet. In addition to being a great actress and bright human being, Kate Winslet also has a fantastic real girl body.

As a mother, Kate has also expressed her concerned about the influence of fashion magazines and super-skinny celebs on her young daughter. To foster an atmosphere of self-acceptance, Winslet has placed a moratorium on fashion magazines that feature photographs of ultra-thin people. (Presumably, that means no magazines at the Winslet household.)

I have to salute Kate for this one. Even though I write about fashion for a living, I actually stopped reading glossy magazines a year ago. Since then I really have felt better about my very real life. Somehow magazines always had a way of making me feel like I was missing something when in reality, I wasn't. Hopefully, the magazine ban will have a similar effect on the Winslet household.

Another magazine bites the dust

Filed under: Style in the News

If Google's acquisition of YouTube wasn't enough to convince you that traditional media -- particularly print -- is in a state of crisis then perhaps the closing of two Canadian fashion magazines will sway you. St. Joseph Media will suspend the publication of Fashion18 and The Look following their quarterly issues. Both magazines debuted back 2002. Over the four years of publication, The Look developed the largest circulation of any Canadian fashion magazine. A spokesman for St. Joseph Media said the closing was due to slow advertising revenue.

While magazines like Vogue seem to be getting fatter with every issue, the future of the fashion magazine industry appears dubious. No one doubts that Vogue will always be there, but the prospects for smaller, niche publications -- like the teen versions of established magazines -- aren't quite so sunny.
