Bringing home the Bacon Bra

Filed under: Fashionable Food, Accessories, Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Swimwear and Lingerie, Men, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Peanut butter and chocolate? Sure, those are two great tastes that go great together, but let's face it, they're no longer shocking the world with their combined novelty. The time as come for Reese's to step aside, there's a new cup in town, and it ain't kosher.

wardrobe_remix Top Pic(k)s: Ready for Spring

wardrobe_remix is a Flickr community dedicated to exploring all the amazing everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. Real people, just like you and me. Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

I love this look by Yes Becky. Taken against the scenic backdrop of London's rainy Hyde Park, she looks so well put together and ready for spring. I love the combination of the yellow and turquoise with the black. She's matched everything just so perfectly...if you look closely, even her manicure matches the outfit! All of the individual pieces of this outfit look great as well, and almost everything is from class British labels such as Topshop, Primark, and Miss Selfridge.

I noticed a lot of creative layering going on this week...everything from neutral palettes to crazy color combinations. I love this earthy outfit worn by the beautiful softspoken. In fact, I think I'm pretty much smitten with this lady's style, period. She's not afraid to mix it up and experiment with color and layers. You see more of her wonderfully quirky style on Flickr and at her blog.

Indie Designer Interviews: Brooke Medlin

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Interviews

Riot Hoops by Brooke MedlinThe following is part of an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews. Today's interview is with amazingly talented jewelry designer Brooke Medlin.

Tell me a little about yourself and your work. I'm Brooke, a metalsmith and jewelry designer based in Dayton, Ohio. I make my jewelry (and other things, like cyanotypes and pinback buttons) in a big, brightly painted studio space that was once a room in an old warehouse. I started out making jewelry in 2000, and things just grew from there, and now I teach metalsmithing classes and workshops out of my studio, which is wonderful. It's great watching people finally have that 'aha!' moment when working with metal. I can almost see the ideas turning round in their head as they master each new step. So wonderful. But as much as I like teaching, I still love to just hunker down in the studio for hours, sawing, filing, soldering, making. I have lately gotten away from using beads in combination with my metalwork, which used to be a staple of most of my work, and am working in mostly metal only now. I love it. I'm finding myself making equal amounts of earthy, organic jewelry and bright, sparkling, modern work. Both are really satisfying.

Who are your favorite designers? This is HARD. I bookmark items and sites dozens of times a day. Right now I'm in love with Patrice of Alcove Press for her 'I Want To Barack Your World' notecards - well-made and timely. Moop makes the most amazing bags, and I don't even carry bags! She's turned me into a convert. The fabrics, the colors! Love them. And I've been enamored with the work of Chloe Le Pichon ever since I bought a tea bowl from her last year. I love that thing. I use it almost exclusively.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? Right now, since winter lasts approximately 8 months in Ohio, long, light turtlenecks that I can layer with brightly colored vests or short sleeved shirts for warmth and color, skinny jeans, and the Frye boots I've had for 6 years and are just now perfectly broken in. I don't wear much makeup, but discovered ingero and her Roxie line of tinted lip balms, which have saved my sad little chapped lips this winter, and made me look, dare I say, smoldering. I bought the bright yet somehow subdued (likely because of the slightly translucent, velvety finish) Pomegranate shade - fantastic. I dab some Gold Toof mineral eyeshadow from Coffin Color in the inner corners of my eyelids, put on my hand-crocheted tam from tiffy tuffington (in either blue or black - I bought both) and am ready to go. In the studio I've always got hand cream from DressGreen nearby - since I use chemicals on my pieces when soldering and applying patina, I wash my hands a lot, and moisturizing them is a must.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

One of my favorite pictures added to the community this past week was this one, by super fab & fashionable Australian blogger Gala Darling. Gala made a post about this dress on her own blog and says she got this gorgeous, foxy flight attendant inspired piece from her friend Joanna at Bowerbird Vintage. I just checked the site out and it's got loads of cute vintage and refashioned dresses, accessories and more. Plus, if you happen to live in Australia, you can take advantage of the free shipping offer through the end of February.

wardrobe_remix Top Pic(k)s: Trendy Yellow

wardrobe_remix is a Flickr community dedicated to exploring all the amazing everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. Real people, just like you and me. Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

Yesterday Kyle pointed out how yellow is popping up all over the place these days. I couldn't help but think the same thing as I browsed through some of the most recent additions to the wardrobe_remix community. Yellow was appearing absolutely everywhere... in tights and accessories, in shoes and boots, and as big pops of color in dresses and jackets. I love how these bright, sunny splashes of color remind me that warm spring days really are just around the corner.

wardrobe_remixer mouthyspaceOne of my fashion obsessions is checking out all of the everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. We're talking REAL people here. Not celebrities, not uber-thin models. What do real people like you and me wear in their everyday lives? That's what the wardrobe_remix community on Flickr is all about exploring.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, I thought I'd start picking out some of my favorite recent remixers and posting them every week or so. Remember: these are real people, of all different shapes and sizes showing off their own personal style. You'll find everything here from mainstream mall finds to thrift store scores to haute couture and everything in between. There is no right or wrong. Or as Tricia would say, "It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it."

This week I noticed a lot of bright, bold pops of colors paired with neutrals, like in this outfit worn by user mouthyspace. I love the pairing of the simple red ribbon belt with this graphic print skirt.

Library of Congress Unleashes Fashionable 1930s-40s Photos on Flickr

Library of Congress adds fashionable photos from 1939-1945 to FlickrI just found out about the amazing collection of color photographs from the 1930s and 1940s that the Library of Congress has just made available via Flickr. This set is comprised of over 1,600 photographs taken during the Great Depression and World War II. Being a history geek and a huge follower of vintage fashions, I naturally found this collection extremely inspiring.

This is a massive collection of photos to sift through. Believe me -- I know because I just did it. But I did manage to gather some of my favorite fashionable photographs from these collections. They are filled with beautiful colors, amazingly coifed hair, utilitarian and military stylings, and loads of fashion inspiration. If you're a fan of vintage or retro fashions like I am, I urge you to take a peek, or check out the Library of Congress blog for more info on this amazing project.

Seven Days of Style: Call (-ing card) Girl

calling and business cardsIt's the sesaon of socializing, and every smart business girl k nows that socializing means networking. While you're out there charming the crowds with your sparkling smile, lovable laugh, and wonderous wit, make sure you are armed with calling cards. Don't rely on your boring business cards from work because really, do you want that darling boy in the black velvet jacket to know what you do during the day? Right. So here are seven ways to make sure he or she calls you, and a few that are insurance that they won't. (Click through on the images for shopping information.)

Sunday - Moo cards are a new customizable option that allows you to print photos from your Flickr account on a slightly slimmer card than usual. For $19.99, you get 100 cards, and they dont' all have to have the same image, you know because some of them have a picture of you (give to the boy) and some of them have a picture of you and three cats (give to grandma!).

Monday - Fabulous! An appropriate name for a stationary company whose pre-made designs are absolutely fabulous. The color palettes are intersting and the designs are some-modern, some-retro. A set of 100 cards is $55.

Share Your Look on a new website

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Style in the News

share your lookAs much as I'd like to encourage you, our Styledash readers, to come and check out our own Styledash Flickr pool, there's a new website that deserves a mention.

ShareYourLook is an entire website dedicated to the idea of uploading photos of yourself to "share your style with the world." The site, which is currently in beta, is basically like Flickr, but filled with photos of people in their share-worthy outfits from across the world. Users can browse photos, collect them into Lookbooks, make comments and "meet" other users. ShareYourLook also has a Pricesortter function that I am guessing is meant to attract designers and vendors who want to "share" looks, and sell them, too.

What's in your bag?

what's in your bagCruising through flickr today, I noticed a group called "What's In Your Bag?" The group has over 3,000 members who have uploaded photos of what they have int heir bags and purses. There are almost 3,000 pictures! Obviously, certain things are natural in purses: wallets, cell phones, even dental floss, but it's fun to nose through the photos and see what kind of crazy things people think are so essential that they have to carry it around with them!

What do you have in your bag that might need some explaining?

And while we're talking about flickr, don't forget that Styledash has our own flickr group which we'd love for you to join and submit photos of things you're wearing, things in your closet, and that totally cute top/sweater/purse/dress that you saw in the store the other day!

Styledash wants to see you flickr your fashion

flickr fashionYesterday, Anne invited us all to join Styledash's YouTube group called What's in my Closet, where we nosy fashionistas can take a video tour of your fabulous closet. However, if video is a little too ambitious for you, we'd love to see snapshots of you, your closet, your clothes, and you in your favorite outfits for work and play in our Styledash Flickr group. We surf Flickr for photos of fabulous fashion, so who knows, your very well-put-together outfit just might show up on styledash!

Fashion off the streets at Flickr

wardrobe remixWe spent quite a bit of time browsing the runways from Fashion Week in New York, and we love to ogle photos of celebrities in the latest trends from high-end designers, but sometimes the best fashion inspiration comes from the average, yet stylish, person on the street. Wardrobe Remix is a photo pool over at photo-sharing site flickr that has over 1400 members who have uploaded more than 5000 photos of themselves in their stylish stuff. I wouldn't say that everything there is necessarily haute couture, but that is precisely the beauty of the photos -- these are everyday people who've put together great outfits right out of their closets.
