Nudists want clothing optional polling place - Voting exposed

Filed under: Style in the News

What's the hottest thing to wear to the polls this election day? Well, some folks on Florida's left coast say it's their birthday suit. A representative of Caliente Resorts in Pasco County, Florida is petitioning his local officials for a clothing-optional precinct -- and apparently nothing in Florida law would prohibit such an establishment. Sure, provocative campaign-wear is all over the place this year, but is anything really more controversial than showing up to the polls with nothing on but a pair of flip flops?

Filed under: Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Red Carpet Trends

We love Christina Hendricks, in all of her sexy babiliciousness and glory. Watching her strut across the offices of Sterling Cooper makes us want to rush out for some hardcore vintage shopping and a box of red hair dye.

Behind-the-Scenes: Havaianas

Flip flops: you love them, we love them, and honestly, the world would be much colder without them.

Even though the sandals could leave us with busted and broken ankles in the near future and expose us to a potentially life-threatening disease, we unapologetically throw caution to the wind every time the sweltering weather conditions become too unbearable and slide our lovable thong shoes right on.

Flip flops could mess up your feet

Yes! The sun is shining brightly, the temperatures are slowly rising, and those dark wash mini shorts that you've had buried in your closets all winter are finally going to see the light of day.

But before you go get another reverse French pedicure and slide that favorite pair of Havaianas flip flops on your feet, you may want to heed this warning.

Twelve great graduation gifts

Besides weddings, the most popular activity for June weekends seems to be high school and college graduations. Along with lifting a toast to grads at all the parties, it's also nice to acknowledge the effort that went into actually getting that degree with something lasting.

A thoughtful gift can be big or small, personalized or humorous, expensive or simply a gesture. The important thing is that it reflects something of the recipient, and your feelings for him or her.

There is a wide, wild and wacky world of gifts made especially for graduates, as well as some traditional, classic items. We've got the full range, from sweet tokens to sinful luxury in the gallery.

Review: "How Not To Look Old" by Charla Krupp

Filed under: Style in the News, Hair Care, Cosmetics, Skin Care, Celebrities with Style

A friend received a review copy of Charla Krupp's How Not To Look Old, and gave it to us as a joke because, pshaw, we are so not old. Obviously we don't need any of that advice.

Except...every single woman who walked into our living room picked up that book and sat, engrossed, reading it from cover to cover. And so did we. Looks like Charla is on to something after all.

The $50 flip flop near miss

As we mentioned in an earlier post, this weekend we had a blister emergency. After a false start, Band Aids saved the day, but we still wandered into Banana Republic, like a zombie, to see if they had inexpensive backless sandals we could buy and wear out of the store.

We're shaking our heads at ourselves, even writing that.

Oh, please, admit you've done the same thing, possibly more than once. It's slightly less reprehensible when you buy the $4 red checkered material flip flops at Walgreens, but it's the same behavior. Blowing cash on an impulse buy is practically a national pass-time.

Tender Toes Tout Sanuk

Some people have tender heads. We have very soft, tender tootsies, so we're always searching for cute shoes that won't cut our feet to shreds.

We expect high heels and strappy sandals to be tough on feet, but the surprise villain in this story is flip flops. They can be the cruelest of footwear to delicate toes.

These are $1,800 flip-flops!

1800 sandalsFlip-flops, they are a piece of footwear that I refuse to embrace but shamefully own more than one pair. Flip-flops are great shoes for showers at the gym and are great for casual hot summer days. I would say the most that I have spent on a pair of flip-flops is $18 for Havaianas because they simply are the best flip-flop on the market. I digress. That being said, spending $1,800.00 on flip flops? That is just plain crazy.

Yes it's true; these flip flops cost $1,800.00! Why? Well, I am not sure why because they certainly aren't cute. The brand Crystalishious is responsible for these overpriced custom Rock & Roll Sandals. These shoes are a one-of-a-kind exclusive on ElectricLadyLand.com and are covered with a crystal rock and roll motif.

According to ElectricLadyLand.com these are a "must see, must have." What do you think? Even if you had $1,800.00 to burn would you buy these?

Woman struck by lightning, saved by flip-flops

flip flopsI live in Austin, the slacker-center of the universe, where owning a pair of flip-flops is practically mandatory. Don't kid yourself, however, these are not a hot fashion item. On rare occasions, an especially stylish young person can pull off wearing flops during the summer, but more often than not, they just make you look like a college student (or like you don't have a job).

That said, they're certainly comfortable, and might just save your life.

At least, that's the story according to Marie Drackert, a woman who was watching TV when a lightning bolt came down her chimney, out her fireplace, and zapped the ever-living crap out of her. The impact was so forceful that it shook the floor, and the electrical charge ruined the woman's washer, dryer, television, telephone, stereo, microwave, oven, toaster, coffee pot and air-conditioning unit.

Marie, on the other hand, is still alive -- all thanks to the rubber in her flip-flops that grounded her. Granted, she's been having heart palpitations and vision problems ever since the strike, but she was spared death by her favorite pair of comfortable footwear.

Wal-Mart's feet-burning flip-flops

Filed under: Stores We Love, Accessories, Shoes

Bad Flip-FlopsDarlings, anyone with the most basic fashion sensibility knows that the only things more stylish than Wal-Mart shoes are... chemical burns!

Well, now you can have the best of both worlds, apparently. Check out this woman's account of her horrifying experience with some very normal-looking flip-flops that she bought from Wal-Mart. I didn't want to post any of the pictures of the serious burns left on her feet because some of you may find them quite unsettling.

Despite informing Wal-Mart of this major problem and hearing from someone else who experienced the same issue with identical flip-flops, not much progress has been made in the situation. The problem still has yet to be resolved and it looks like the woman's website will be updated as news comes in.

The scariest thing is that Wal-Mart is still selling the shoes. Sign of good customer care, right there.

What not to wear to work this summer

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing

It's getting hot again -- finally! Time to get out and do some shopping for fun summer looks. However, if you work in an office (and you'd like to continue doing so), a recent survey of Monster.com users points to a few things you should definitely avoid.

Above all else, don't wear tank tops! This should be obvious, but apparently there's a number of women who show up to work with their bra showing. I guess if you're working in advertising, gaming, or some other highly-creative industry, you might be able to get away with showing a little more skin, but I'd still think twice -- especially if you want to be taken seriously.

Secondly, ditch the flip-flops. Don't get me wrong -- I live in Austin, where flip-flop sandals are a staple for every man, woman and child -- but unless they're incredibly classy (as in, you paid way too much for them), they make you look like a college student, and aren't appropriate for work.

Oddly, Hawaiian prints also ranked high on the list, which you should never wear, ever, under any circumstances. So quickly donate all that stuff to your local Goodwill before you're tempted to go crazy on your next casual Friday.

But beyond the fashion foul-ups, what you wear affects your demeanor, which will, in turn, affect your performance at the office. Trust me -- about two months ago I started working out of my house, and ever since then I've been working in my pajamas. I now have such a slacker attitude, I'm sure no one will ever hire me to work in an office ever again.
