Gemma Ward nominated for an Aussie Film award

Filed under: Style in the News

The last time we mentioned anything about IMG supermodel Gemma Ward it was to announce her retirement from the fashion industry at the ripe old age of 20, which she apparently isn't going to do anymore. Our bad.

Gemma Ward to play "actress" once more?

Filed under: Style in the News

As was mentioned earlier, IMG star Gemma Ward has taken a break from the modeling industry to focus more on her budding acting career.

Recently, she starred in the horror flick The Strangers, starring Liv Tyler. And if everything goes accordingly, she may have another chance to play a crazed killer behind a funny mask once again:

Variety reports Rogue Pictures, the studio that produced the eerie film, is planning on making a sequel to their summer hit. The flick cost them a mere $9 million to make and it grossed a whopping $54 million. Production is slated to begin at the beginning of 2009.

Maybe this time Gemma will have a speaking part -- stay tuned!

Is Gemma Ward retiring from modeling?

Right around this time each year, rumors begin to run rampant about key fashion week faces, so we're going to take this latest bit of news about a certain IMG catwalker with a grain of salt:

Apparently, former Prada campaign girl, Gemma Ward, will soon be officially retiring from modeling -- opting instead to pursue a career in Hollywood as an actress. Earlier this year, Gemma stared in two films: The Strangers, where she played an evil killer who hides behind a mask and The Black Balloon, a feel good film where Gemma plays the girlfriend of boy trying to cope with his brother's mental disability.

One time in an interview, Gemma said she only began modeling because people told her it would help her acting career. So the jump to become a full-time actress isn't that big of stretch. Plus, with acting, no one will probably care as much when the already thin 6'0 beauty decides to eat hamburger or some other food no one should be freaking out about.

Vogue India hits the shelves

Filed under: Runway Trends, Events: On the Scene, Style in the News

Vogue is a global enterprise. There is British Vogue, French Vogue, Italian Vogue, Russian Vogue, Australian Vogue, and the list goes on and on.

The latest nation to join in the Vogue empire is India. Indian Vogue hit news stands earlier this week. The 50,000 copy run will be available at over 5,000 outlets in 40 towns through out India. Editor-in-chief Priya Tanna remarked that the launch of Indian Vogue symbolizes the nation's official entry into the world of fashion.

The cover of the magazine features several well-known Indian models such as Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, and Preity Zinta. Also on the cover is Australian model Gemma Ward. (Huh?)

Is it just me or does it seem odd to put a blond girl from Australian on the very first cover of a magazine that is supposed to symbolize India's entry into the world of fashion? Not to be flippant about this, but could someone please get that girl off the cover.

Gemma Ward's ModTv interview

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Australian supermodel Gemma Ward was one of the most popular faces at this fall's Fashion Week. As I've mentioned in other posts, in addition to a modeling career, the 19-year-old has aspirations of following in the footsteps of model-turned-actress Jaime King. To this end, Ward has even landed a roll in a feature film with actress Liv Tyler. And while I do not doubt for a second that Gemma is great on the catwalk, her on screen appearance leaves much to be desired. Maybe it's because this is a somewhat grainy YouTube video, but Gemma's ModTv interview does not give me hope for her big screen debut.

Closing bell starts fashion week

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

A foursome of fashion's most famous were on hand yesterday to ring the closing bell at the end of the trading day at the NASDAQ stock exchange. Designers Nicole Miller and Betsey Johnson were on hand, as well as model Gemma Ward and IMG fashion vice-president Fern Mallis. After counting down from ten, the women pressed the closing bell, then signed their names to an electronic board, which broadcast their signatures on billboards around Times Square. Admittedly, no one in this group was an avid follower of the NASDAQ. But NASDAQ shouldn't take that personally, especially considering that the largely-male NASDAQ traders probably weren't avid wearers of Johnson's off-kilter designs or Nicole Miller's elegant gowns.

Is Gemma Ward ready for her close-up?

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Trust me, every model out there has aspirations of one day becoming an actress/model. So, it came as no surprise to me that Australian supermodel Gemma Ward is trying her hand at the acting-thing in a new movie "Stranger." Eighteen-year-old Ward, who was the youngest model to ever grace the cover of Vogue, will be starring opposite Liv Tyler in the suspense thriller set to be released in October 2007.

I have to be honest, I really think that Gemma is in over her head on this one. It's not that I'm doubting her acting talent -- okay, I am -- but you'd think that she'd want to play it safe in her first movie. I just get the feeling that Liv Tyler is going to make her look really model/actress, not actress/model.

Models + dancing = funny

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News

When I saw this video on YouTube, I practically fell out of my chair. Few things in the world are as funny or as charming as watching that little Gemma Ward and her model buds sporting Afros and lip syncing to Beyonce.

It's so delightfully middle school slumber party, isn't it? I half expected a poster of Patrick Swayze to suddenly appear on the wall. But good for them -- after all, when you make $2000 a day just to look pretty, you really shouldn't take yourself that seriously.
