Oh, the Golden Globes -- the gowns, the flashes, the speeches, the tediously long commercial breaks. Award show traditions aside, I would like to give a hearty two thumbs up to actress Helen Mirren who won Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Elizabeth I.

I'll be the first one to admit that before The Queen, I had never heard of Mirren. However, after seeing her elegant, tasteful and sexy appearances at a number of premiers, I've become quite smitten with her. For one, Helen Mirren makes me hold onto the hope that I too can be a smoking hot 61-year-old without sacrificing my soul the gods of plastic surgery.

The way that Helen made it work last night at the Golden Globes is the same way she makes it work at all of her appearances through a winning combination of good color (I'm unable to find her wearing black in any of the Google image pictures), subdued make-up and a confidence that says she doesn't need to be 26 to be beautiful.

Love them or hate them, it wouldn't be a red carpet event without the catty, bile of Melissa and Joan Rivers. While we all hope for some truly awful surprises this evening( a la Uma Thurman in the Heidi lederhosen and Bjork in the swan dress), the shrewish Rivers duo dished on a few of their disappointing Golden Globe predictions for the Seattle Times.

Melissa and Joan expect to see the following:

• Hair extensions
• Bony, too-thin celebrities
• Black dresses
• Goddess inspired fashions

Ugh...sounds a little boring doesn't it? First of all, I think hair extensions are gross, especially on too thin celebrities in black dresses. In fact, combining these three qualities with a goddess dress element might be enough to put me over the edge.

If Melissa and Joan are correct in their predictions, we could have a very boring red carpet on our hands.

As the spokeswoman for St. John, Angelina Jolie is under contractual obligation to wear St. John on certain designated occasions. One of these events happens to be the Golden Globe awards on Monday evening. But Angie isn't exactly thrilled with her gown options at St. John. (Truth be told, I thought St. John only made ladies suits. Tasteful suits, no doubt, but not the kind of thing that Angie would want to wear to a big event. Remember the black leather dress of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith premiere?)

To keep Jolie happy, St. John designers are working around the clock to create a dress that will satisfy the actress' exacting standards. Be sure to look out for her Monday to see what the St. John team came up with.
