Comme des Garçons Black is Heading to New York City

Filed under: Style in the News

Avant-garde Alert: Comme des Garçons Black lands in NYC on June 22. Photo courtesy of doverstreetmarket.com

Some New Yorkers take a brief hiatus from donning black for the summer season, but with the unseasonably rainy weather, black hasn't gone anywhere. So looks like black is the new black!

All of which makes it the perfect time for Comme des Garçon's Black store to pop-up in New York City.

The temporary "guerrilla" line will be available in two locations: a shop-in-shop at Barneys for two weeks and a freestanding store, located at 10th Avenue and 17th Street in Chelsea on June 22.

Black celebrates CDG's 40th anniversary, revisiting avant-garde designer Rei Kawakubo's early days when the color black served as her nom de guerre.

Celebs Give the Shirts Off Their Backs for H&M's Fashion Against AIDS

Whatever Dita Von Teese is selling, we're buying! Could she be any cooler or more glamorous? And forget the shopping guilt; a portion of the proceeds of a "Dita Von Tee" or any of the other celebrity-designed tops go to a very important cause: AIDS awareness.

Today, H&M launches Fashion Against AIDS, for which some of the hottest names in showbiz, including Katy Perry (shown above in her own leotard design), Estelle (who hosted last night's aunch party), Cyndi Lauper, N.E.R.D. and Yoko Ono, collaborated to design 80's-inspired organic cotton T-shirts (or leotards in KP's case); 25 percent of the proceeds will be donated to fighting AIDS.

Matthew Williamson at H&M - Bright and Bold the Second Time Around

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Photos courtesy of H&M

It's a hot pink, canary yellow and acid green Fashion Alert for a budget-conscious Style Kings (and all you Queens, too)! The highly anticipated second wave of Matthew Williamson's high-low collaboration with H&M arrives in stores on May 14th -- as in tomorrow.

The collection is filled with vivid colors and patterns that are perfect for hot summer days and sultry nights. In addition to his drama-filled women's line, Williamson has also created his first menswear line. And it's not for faint-hearted boys! We weren't kidding about the hot pink (pants) or acid green (shorts). But if you have the nerve to wear them, and you get there early enough to actually score a pair, you (or your man) will be the hippest dude strutting the streets!

As we told you back in March, Wiliamson is thrilled that this collaboration makes his vision accessible to a wider audience. As much as he loves having his fashions grace the lithe -- and rich -- forms of Lindsay, Nicole and Eva Longoria, he says, "I want to share a glimpse of the Matthew Williamson world with H&M customers, by creating an aspirational lifestyle collection which is both exotic and fashion forward."

And if past experience is any indication, that entire aspirational audience will be lined up three deep by 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. So if you want in on the fabulous, grab a sleeping bag, rush your fine self over there and get in line!

Adrien Brody's Blue Hair Gets Rave Reviews

Filed under: Men, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Hair Cut and Style

Adrian Photo by Getty Images.

Last Thursday, Adrien Brody rolled up to a screening of The Brothers Bloom (maybe he thought it was called The Brothers Blue) with an eye-catching new do. Problem was, it consisted of roughly a dozen blue-highlighted chunks poking out of his typically messy and understated hair.

Really, Adrien? Really? All he needed was a glow stick and a pacifier to complete his "I'm a rebellious teenager" look. We're really not quite sure what's going on with this shaggy mess (hopefully those blue streaks are just extensions), and we have absolutely no idea what Adrien is shooting for -- but it definitely got our attention. Not to mention, his experimentation brings up a pretty valid beauty question: is pink, blue, orange, purple, etc. hair dye fair game for anyone over the age of 25?

Maybe Adrien got the blue streaks for an upcoming role in a movie about people who follow jam bands? That would totally explain it. Otherwise, we say leave rainbow colored hair dye to those who don't look like they need it to cover their gray.

The NY Post is claiming that Adrien's new 'do is inspired by none other than "American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert, whose glam rock style is taking the nation by storm. Again, really, Adrien? Really?

Gap loses spot as world's largest clothing retailer to Zara

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans

Thanks to boring styles, plummeting consumer spending, and a tendency to leave their employees with Post Retail Folding Disorder, the Gap has finally been overtaken by as the world's largest clothing retailer. All hail the new #1: Spain's mega fashion retailer Zara, who we've really never even heard of. The chain, based in A Coruña, Spain, has apparently been a dominating force in Europe and Latin America -- but has only a handful of stores in the US.

Zara's parent company Inditex has managed to spread its successful chain of stores far and wide by some kind of weird business model that involves keeping up with the latest trends in fashion -- something that the Gap probably should have been focusing on. Zara's unique model includes in-house design teams and encourages staff members to point out any new trends to keep the designers up to date. Not only that, but Zara apparently spends very little on advertising. Instead, they use their stores as a means of drawing attention to their brands.

As to not steal attention from the stars of the show, Diane Kruger laid low at the L.A. premiere of The X-Files: I Want to Believe on July 23 at the Grauman Chinese Theatre. Her casual attire consisted of an easy American Apparel tee and Acne jeans pairing which she lightly accessorized with an adorable printed scarf, cool white watch, and studded bag. The perfect low key look for a night at the movies.

Everybody is tipping their hat to Karl these days

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

For people who want show their appreciation for Karl Lagerfeld's contributions to the world of fashion, but can't afford any of his designs, you can at least get his Cartman-esque cartoon image plastered on a t-shirt. After breaking into the video gamer demographic with his cameo in Grand Theft Auto IV, now Karl's being immortalized in graphic tee form by Urban Outfitters. He's really on a roll.

Somehow the fashion guru has managed to end up in an UO exclusive collection called Beautiful Ones alongside David Bowie and the King of Pop himself. We're not sure we get the connection -- stylized androgyny? Maybe it just means that he's reached a place in pop culture where his only peers are rock stars. We cant help but point out that Karl and Michael are both competing over who can claim the award for 'Most Notable Gloved Celebrity.'

Aside from the line he did for H&M, this has got to be the least expensive market that he's ever appealed to.

Fashion is crashin': Depression-era styles are coming back

Filed under: Style in the News

What's the hot color for this fall? According to designers at Banana Republic, H&M, and the Gap, it's depression-era grey. While they might be jumping the gun a little bit by repackaging styles from the Great Depression, it never hurts to try to stay ahead of the curve in the world of fashion. We haven't noticed any bread lines or wandering Okies -- do you feel like changing your style to suit the economy?

With all the talk about tooth art and the skyrocketing number of cosmetic surgeries in the US, it's hard to imagine people going back to the 30's for any other reason than for sheer novelty. Also, it's kind of an ironic way to try to boost slumping sales. The styles were previewed to Wall Street where they apparently got "mixed reviews." Basically, think Newsies: more hats, baggy pants, grey patterns, and utilitarian lace-up shoes.

Needless to say, we're not too wild about the look -- a little too costume-ish. Still, some of the styles will no doubt leak into the mainstream. If anything, we hope it's time for full-brimmed hats to make a comeback.

Video games and fashion, finally the girls are invited to play

Filed under: Style in the News

In a fashion first, H&M is going to manufacture and sell a dress designed by gamer Beau Fornillos, who made it while playing Sims 2. Literally while playing, as in Fornillos made it as part of the game!

Sims players have been able to "shop" at H&M for over a year. Fornillos uploaded his design from the game to to an online runway, where it was judged the winner. His prize is having it brought to life by H&M.

This LA Times story describes the shift in gaming that is bringing fashion to the xBox and Nintendo DS, not to mention the monster that is Wii. From Karl Largerfeld's cameo in Grand Theft Auto to the Japanese street style game "That's QT" (which we can't wait to try, it's all goth lolitas and harajuku girls!) fashion is a viable subject for video games because at last girls are a viable target market for video games.

How viv&ingrid switched us from sterling-only to "Yes, gold!"

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

For years we were die hard silver aficionados. Hoop earrings, clangy bracelets, shiny necklaces, it was sterling or nothing. Gold was what our mother wore, for Pete's sake. It was classic but not cool.

Then, while shopping in Abbot Kinney, a too cool for us part of Venice Beach, we found the cutest four leaf clover charm necklace. Except it was gold.

Donatella Versace won't do H&M line

So many major designers have done lines for H&M that Donatella Versace would be a seemingly logical choice to team up with the retailer. But, she won't be following in the steps of Stella McCartney, Viktor and Rolf or Roberto Cavalli.
