Katie Holmes' Beauty Secret is Money

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Hair Cut and Style

We admit to being a little obsessed with The Katie Holmes Transformation. And now we know how she did it!

High Maintenance Celebrities

It's expensive to be famous. Primping for the public eye prompts some stars to spend on their looks what the average American makes in a year. Here's a list of the biggest spenders.

After being lambasted by the press for her wan look and too-skinny figure, Katie Holmes traveled to Japan in March 2009 for the Japanese premiere of Valkyrie - and a $42,400 makeover! The star reportedly spent $28,000 on veneers, $10,000 on spa treatments, $2,900 for hair extensions and $1,500 for makeup, all to return herself to her long haired, healthy-looking Joey Potter glory.

At 40, Jennifer Aniston has pulled off the incredible feat of looking better than the average 25 year old. How does she do it? Money, honey. Aniston insisted that her hairstylist (and good friend) Chris McMillan accompany her on her week-long trip to Europe to promote her movie, Marley & Me. McMillan traveled to and from London first class, stayed in top hotels, and billed over $2000 per day for his hair styling services - putting his total cost around $50,000. Demi Moore stayed out of the spotlight for nearly a decade while she raised her family. And she returned for 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle looking, well, exactly like she did when we last saw her. The GI Jane star reportedly spent close to $500,000 on a head to toe surgical makeover, which she debuted to the world in a bathing suit scene, holding her own against the much younger figures of Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz in the movie.

Behold, Madonna in 2009 at 50, versus Madonna in 1987 at 29. Not much of a difference, is there? Sure, she's traded a little baby fat for a chiseled jaw, and plucked her Brooke Shields brows, but Madge has clearly spent a pretty penny keeping her up her looks. We'd expect nothing less from the original Material Girl.

Paris Hilton's Bandit hair extension headband

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

Interchangeable hair extension headband -- yep, we think it sounds just as bad as you do, but Paris Hilton apparently thought differently. She's coming out with the Bandit, which is apparently a headband on which you can stick all different types of hair extensions. Sounds classy.

The hair extensions for the Bandit will be available in three lengths and a variety of colors, including Paris blond, natch. She'll be showing them off tomorrow at a private L.A. press conference and fashion show.

Hurry! Kate Moss' hair extensions on Ebay

Filed under: Accessories, Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

Is it possible to be totally impressed and totally creeped-out at the exact same time?
Because that's pretty much the way we felt when we say that a German paparazzi type was holding one of Kate Moss' hair extensions hostage on Ebay. Apparently, while Kate was in Berlin last month, promoting her new fragrance Velvet Hour -- she had a wardrobe malfunction that's making this guy at least €805 ($1,269) as we write this post.

The story, as best we can translate, goes something like this: Kate was leaving her Velvet Hour afterparty thing, looking hot and showing off her flowing locks on the red carpet, when -- boink! -- one of her hair extensions popped out. Then, this opportunistic photographer dude immediately realized its value and snatched it up. Easiest couple thousand bucks that guy's probably ever made.

Anyway, you've got a little more than a day left to place your bid. If you're into that creepy, celebrity-stalking thing.

Are extensions safe for your hair?

If you have short hair and wish it was longer, you have oodles of options for hair extensions. You can go high-end or cheap, real or synthetic -- the options are nearly endless.

But if you want extensions, you have more to consider than whether you want to use Jessica Simpson's or Paris Hilton's -- you need to consider whether it's okay for your hair.

Paris Hilton launches hair extension lines

While her outfits remain consistently tacky and cheap looking, Paris Hilton has managed somewhat to repair her otherwise bad public image since her brief stint in jail last year.

The heiress hasn't been seen stumbling out of clubs or publicly fighting with Hollywood rival Lindsay Lohan in months, and she has yet to violate her probation.

Bad blood and hair extensions cause rift between Brit and Jessica

Filed under: Style in the News, Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

What could be better than a celebrity endorsement of another celebrity's line of hair extensions? A celebrity catfight!

Following Britney's infamous head shaving incident, Jessica Simpson sent her former nemesis a set of Jessica Simpson-brand hair extensions.

According to Jessica, she only wanted to be helpful. Brit, however, saw the gift as an insult, so she returned the box with an attached note that read, "No Thanks." Irritating, no?

Oddly enough, Britney recently purchased a set of Simpson's hair extensions. When word of the purchase reached Jessica, she was apparently further irritated by Brit.

What's going to happen here, people? Will the two reconcile or will they continue the catfight? Any thoughts?

And you thought $400 was too much for a haircut

Archeology news stories rarely make their way onto fashion blogs. It's for good reason since archeology -- meticulous, slow-moving and glamour-free -- is the polar opposite of fashion, which is finicky, fast and full of ego.

However, for today only, the disparate fields of beauty and antiquities might actually merge. Or if nothing else, archeology might give us a new perspective on what we as a culture are willing to spend for something beautiful.

You've seen Paris Hilton's $2000 hair extensions, right? (Of course you have -- it's her real hair we've never seen!) Well, those gold locks might as well be made of cheap synthetics because they can't even begin to stand up to what a person would have to pay to get their hands on an even inch of Mammoth hair.

Mammoth hair? Aren't mammoths extinct? Indeed they are, which perhaps explains the whopping $50 per inch price tag mammoth hair pulls on the black market.

Just for fun, I've calculated how much Paris Hilton's weave would cost if it were made of mammoth hair instead of human hair. Assuming that she has total area of 144 inches worth of extensions (12" x 12"), a mammoth hair wig of the same proportions would cost about $7200, and that's just for the hair itself. Adding the ancient weave would probably be another thousand dollars, plus tip.

So Paris, if you're reading this, I hope you realize that a mammoth hair weave would definitely put Lohan in her place (i.e. she's poorer than you).
