(Click on the photo to see the Top 10 Celeb Hair Nightmares)

Most women have learned certain beauty tricks that keep them from looking older than they are (or looking their age, as the case may be). In Hollywood, youthful looks seem to be the primary goal of many actresses, so naturally one would imagine that it's the one place where women would make sure to find a fresh, age-appropriate 'do.

However, that's not always the case.

To cut or not to cut: Some (not so) big bang theories for your hair

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

According to StyleList, bangs continue to be a hot trend, but how do you know if they're right for you? You could, of course, try out some fake bangs to get the look. But, if that's not for you, there are a few bang facts you need to know before you make the cut -- remember, it takes FOREVER to grow them out.

The main things to take into account before cutting bangs are your hair type, face shape, and the amount of effort you're willing to put into it.

Katie Holmes hits the chop shop again

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style

When Katie Holmes chopped her hair off last summer, we were fairly shocked, but she totally pulled it off. Then came this cut, which we loved even more. It was so daring and fashion forward and sophisticated, and it really flattered her face. But, she couldn't leave it at that.

Holiday hairstyling help from InStyle

Filed under: Holiday Style, Hair Care

holiday hair style- party ponyWe may not have even hit Thanksgiving yet, but the holidays have been here since ... Labor Day. As we settle into the second half of November, we need to start thinking not only about holiday gifts shopping, but holiday parties. Lots of companies will do their corporate "holiday parties" late in November, in order to avoid the insanity of holiday scheduling that involves the usual days off, vacations, and of course, conflicts with all the other parties that are taking place. That means we need to start planning to be a fabulously stylish party guest now.

Styledash will be on hand with holiday ideas and tips for great things to wear, but for now, girl, what do we do about that hair? You certainly can't pile it all on top of your head like a condor's nest. Your co-workers have seen you do that every day when you tumble into work! For a little inspiration, take a peek over at InStyle's Holiday Hair How-To, which has several hairstyles that are glamorous, yet won't require a team of stylists armed with blow-dryers and brushes. Not only do they have the hairstyle as worn by a celebrity, but tips about what products you should use to get the best results. The one I'll be sporting all season will probably be the Party Pony -- a sleek ponytail like Jessica Alba's, with height in the front for a little holiday drama.

Style foul: the MacGyver mullet

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Hair Care, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

With a paper clip, a piece of bubble gum, and his trusty Swiss Army knife, MacGyver saved the world 139 times over. (Yes, there were really 139 episodes of MacGyver). In doing so, Richard Dean Anderson -- his true-life name, which isn't nearly as cool -- sported a mullet.

This wasn't just any mullet -- it's now known as the "MacGyver mullet." It, frighteningly enough, resembles the mullet of Joe Dirt, an unsuccessful film from a few years ago that blatantly mocked the hairstyle. MacGyver's head of hair was dirty blond, uncombed, and uncut. He truly embodied the "business in the front, party in the back" motto of the mullet culture.

It seems like we've been talking a lot lately about mullets here on StyleDash, but hey, it's a cultural phenomenon we'd prefer to never show up again. Anne mentioned that Jennifer Aniston, Don Johnson, and Madonna all inspired people worldwide to copy their styles, so that leads me to wonder: Was anyone ever inspired to grow a "MacGyver mullet?"

Testing out the Conair Tourmaline brush

Filed under: Hair Care, Steals and Deals

conair tourmalineI wasn't planning on buying an new brush but this one tempted me from the drug store aisle. The hair-enhancing properties of crushed tourmaline have been well-documented in the past few years and many companies have created hair dryers and flat-irons involving the gem. Tourmaline is piezoelectric and when crushed it releases negative ions which have a beneficial effect on hair, increasing shine and minimizing brittleness. This is the first time I have seen a brush using the gem before so I had to buy it and test it out.

The verdict? I didn't notice a big difference in just brushing my hair with it. I brushed one side of my hair with a regular brush and one side with the tourmaline brush. I couldn't tell them apart. I did notice that when I used it with a dryer my hair did appear to be a little shinier and softer but not so much so that I might not have just imagined the increased shine. Either way, it's still a decent hairbrush and I dig the snappy red color, it matches my toes. The brush sells for around $8.
