Miss Universe Japan - We Bow to You!

Filed under: Style in the News

Okay, beauty pageants haven't exactly been the pinnacle of high fashion (despite some attempts at updating the events). However, the Miss Universe Japan competition gives us hope -- how is it that those Japanese girls are always so darn stylish?

Rather than the skimpy, sparkly outfits we've gotten used to seeing in the Miss USA competition, Miss Japan contestants were decked out in retro, 40s-inspired swimsuits and complementary hats -- so chic and stylish, making it more like a music video or photo shoot than a traditional pageant.

We can't say that we're surprised -- we're often drawn to Japanese trends well before they show up here in the States. But we're definitely intrigued. Will we see similar costuming for the Miss Universe pageant?

Japanese Loincloths for Ladies - Yea or Nay?

Filed under: Style in the News, Swimwear and Lingerie

woman wearing a fundoshiLook, we're far from suggesting that the traditional Japanese loincloth -- known as a "fundoshi" -- is a good look on men. We kinda hope it never come in fashion. However, it's apparently the ladies in Japan who desire the loose, uninhibited freedom of the fundoshi these days. The ladies' fundoshi, featuring its infamous tarzan-esque front and back flaps, is now reaching minor trend status overseas.

Dude, the Man Bra is all the Rage in Japan

Filed under: Accessories, Swimwear and Lingerie, Men

Wish Room's male bra advertisementUnlike most people who use the term dude brah, when we put these two syllables together, we're not using them as a casual, stoner-like way of addressing a friend. Instead, we're actually we're actually referring to a new article of chest-supporting men's lingerie that has become a bestseller on Japan's top online shopping site. After going live with the man bra in November, the completely gratuitous lingerie for dudes has become one of the fastest selling items for Japan's cross dressers.

Seafood Lobby Says Get Well Soon, Faker - Celebrity Diets

Filed under: Fashionable Food, Celebrities with Style

After his recent Broadway shake up, you've probably heard that Jeremy Piven adheres to a strict pesco-vegetarian diet to keep up his trim figure. According to Piven, that's why he not so gracefully bowed out of a Broadway production of Mamet's Speed the Plow at the last minute -- due to mercury poisoning. Well, now the seafood industry is firing back in an attempt to defend the safety of a slimming fish diet. We have to admit, they're pretty convincing.

The "I do" Wedding Band -- Jewelry that Speaks to Us

When "conceptual jeweler" Sakurako Shimizu came up with the idea to capture the beauty of the waveforms and engrave them on simple but elegant jewelry pieces, she probably had no idea that she had just come up with the most awesome trend in wedding jewelry ever. But she had. Shimizu makes her distinctive jewelry by recording sounds, isolating certain words -- as she did with her "I do" ring shown to the right -- and carefully cuts the waveform into rings, brooches, whatever. Genius.

Must have bling of the day: Ambush's Beeeeethoven ring

Japanese line Ambush doesn't take itself too seriously, as evidenced by their highly amusing Bheeeeetoven collection (yes, spelled like that) currently available at Frution in Las Vegas and online. Sure, it features the bust of the famed composer, but it's not exactly made for the classical radio set.

Sofia Coppola design shoes, handbags for Louis Vuitton

Filed under: Handbags, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

Sure, she won an Oscar for directing Lost in Translation, but can Sofia Coppola's celluloid skills translate into the world of fashion? Apparently, Louis Vuitton is willing to take the risk on her sartorial skills, they're letting her design a range of shoes and handbags that will be launched in Tokyo -- ironically the setting of her acclaimed film -- and the sold in luxury stores worldwide.

Of course, we already know that LV and the Coppolas are BFFs ever since Sofia and her father posed for Annie Leibovitz for LV's "core values" campaign. But that doesn't appear to be the only reason the French luxury designer tapped Sofia for the project. Apparently, Sofia has a background in fashion design that dates back to her pre-film days. After graduating from the California Institute of Arts, Coppola started her own clothing line named Milk fed, which, appropriately enough, is sold exclusively in Japan.

Awesomeness: A suit that you can wear in the shower

You've got to hand it to the Japanese, they always seem to be a step ahead when it comes to adopting new technologies. Did you know they had the iPod back in 1985? Okay, that's a complete lie. Still, in light of their latest innovation -- the shower suit -- we'd believe it if you told us that they were building an elevator into outer space. Wait, they are. Well, almost as impressive as the space elevator, a Japanese company ironically named Australian Wool Innovation has designed a suit that you never need to take to the cleaners!

According to the article, just rinse the suit for 3-4 minutes in warm water, hang it up, and let it drip dry -- "if hung properly, no ironing is needed." Nice. Although we're pretty sure that a handheld shower head would work best, it seems like just about anyone could handle this modest cleaning task. Apparently, Japanese executives have been wearing this suit for a year already, and because of its success, AWI wants to take the technology into ladieswear -- and then worldwide.

Instructional suit-washing video after the break.

Yu-Be

One way to find products gentle enough for sensitive skin is to shop for baby products. Japanese pharmacist Yoshikiyo Nowatari, way back in 1957, decided to turn that idea on it's side, and make a gentle, chemical free body care product that the whole family could use. The Yu-Be line is the result.

Yu-Be's glycerin-based formula is free of artificial colors, fragrances, oils and petroleum, and enriched with vitamins E and B2. It also contains camphor, which is sort of a wonder ingredient that soothes irritations, is a mild local anesthetic and is anti-microbial.

Today Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream is the top selling medicated, vitamin-enriched skincare cream in Japan, probably because you can use it for everything. And now you don't have to go to Japan to find it. Sephora offers it online, for the relatively affordable price of $24 for the 2.75 ounce jar.
