FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Jill Stuart Front Row

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Fashion Week

Each year Fashion Week becomes more of a celebrity circus. Yesterday the elegant NY Public Library was the scene of the Jill Stuart show, and while the mostly black and white, tough-girl-meets-Stevie Nicks ensembles garnered a huge buzz, it would be impossible to deny that the starlets sitting front row center were just as much, if not more, of a draw.

Jill Stuart Front Row

I saw several editors wobble a bit from the crush of the photographers (and yes, I was taking pictures too). But really? I think that Jessica Stroup from the new 90210 is lovely, but a budding actress should never steal the spotlight from the fab juxtaposition of 5-inch platform booties against billowing chiffon. It just isn't right. It's time for the clothes to take center stage again. With one exception: Bette Midler was there, and she's impossible to upstage.

Seeing the likes of, from left to right, Kristin Bell, Michelle Trachtenberg, Jessica Stroup (from 90210) Paris and Nikki, Amanda Bynes, Gossip Girl Amanda Setton and Adrianne Palicki, who plays Tara in the woefully underappreciated Friday Night Lights in person is harmless fun. They are always teensy, with unfathomably shiny hair and flawless skin. And watching them react to the show can be hilarious. During a nip slip (these days there is at least one per show- you get used to it after a couple of times), Jessica giggled while the rest of the starlets remained blank-faced. It was nice to see some personality.

The adorable actress was quite smiley throughout the show. She seemed, out of all of them, like the girl you'd most like have as a friend.

So much of the focus of fashion shows these days are on the celebrities (or wannabes), perching in the front row.

Here's something new: The photographer pen started to playfully yell at the attendees to sit down and let the show begin already! The celeb-worship was, as far as they were concerned, O-V-E-R.

I couldn't help but notice that Paris and Nikki Hilton are seriously close sisters. They spoke to only each other and seemed to really enjoy it.

The trend continues: Textured leg wear is huge, and Paris here rocks the look (and no, it's not a new tattoo, as some of the other press guessed). LINK?

Adrianne Palicki from the hugely entertaining Friday Night Lights enjoyed the show, but needed to spit out her gum!

From The Front Row: Tie One On

Today as I was sitting at the Jill Stuart show, three things were obvious. First, Bette Midler, who was laughing and chatting directly across from me, is insanely chic and gorgeous. Second, the looks for Spring will be layered, willowy, and sheer. And third, the accessory of the season, I predict, will be the scarf.

Throughout the show, models had diaphanous material wrapped around their heads, ankles and wrists as adornments, and the clothes themselves were constructs of silk and organza tiers, often completely see-through.

That's the runway.

The real way: You'll see me with an Hermes scarf wrapped around my wrists instead of a bracelet, or tied around my neck and waist to create a shirt, or fluttering over jeans as an alternative belt. It's time to get creative and express yourself. Wrap it up!

For great ideas on how to get dozens of looks with just a simple square of material, download "Playtime With Your Scarf" from the Hermes website.

Do you want to be in Teen Vogue?

Filed under: Style in the News

When we were in the sixth grade, we already had a pretty firm grip on reality and pretty much knew that talk shows like Jerry Springer and Rikki Lake were for our amusement more so than they were for us to, well, learn anything from.

So we know that some of our fabulous readers, while extremely wise and intelligent, are probably that of a younger breed, which is why we want to inform you guys of this really cool contest Teen Vogue is currently running:

Anyone who thinks their outfits are just aching for a couple of minutes of fame can upload snapshots of themselves to Teen Vogue for a chance to be featured in the style mag's coveted pages. In addition, runner-ups could receive a Jill Stuart handbag or a $500 gift certificate to Shopbop.

Good luck!

Out with the old, in with the new: Hilary Swank replaces Lindsay Lohan as the face of Jill Stuart

Out with the old and in with the new. Wait...what? That doesn't make sense. Hilary Swank is actually older than Lindsay Lohan. But, fashion label Jill Stuart has decided to replace la Lohan with Ms. Hilary as the face of the brand.

A source said, "Jill wanted to go for a celebrity to make her fashion line more high profile. But after everything Lindsay has been through over the last year, she doesn't feel it would be right for her to represent the line. She thinks Hilary Swank would be the ideal choice because she is that little bit older, and incredibly well respected in the acting industry."

Let's translate that -- Lindsay is washed up and after seeing her hoo-ha a million times nobody will take her seriously as a high fashion sell. Lindsay's popularity has been headed straight down the drain for the past year and Jill Stuart wants to get out while the gettin's good.

Let's just hope that when they do shoot the ads they'll photoshop a little meat on Hilary's bones. Homegirl has been looking like she's in serious need of a hamburger or ten. Aside from that minor detail, I congratulate Jill on making a wise choice. Adios Lohan, aloha Swank!

Jill Stuart thinks drugs are fine

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Lindsay Lohan Jill Stuart Maybe Jill Stuart doesn't personally think that drugs are okay, but she could certainly be sending out a mixed message by allowing Lindsay Lohan to continue to represent her brand. The beautiful, but troubled actress will be the face of Jill Stuart beginning in August with ads running through November.

Jill Stuart on the rehab flunky starlet: "I can't say enough fantastic things about Lindsay...she is sexy and smart, exactly what the Jill Stuart woman embodies."

I have to say I side with Jill on this one. Sure, Lindsay Lohan is train wreck material who can't keep it straight, but should she lose a job that she already completed because she had a relapse? The photos look great, the camera seems to love it some Lohan. The real question will be if the products sell. Jill Stuart is definitely taking a chance with this campaign. Perhaps it will keep Lohan relevant while she is off getting well or maybe this will further cement that everything Lohan touches turn to mush (her new movie I Know Who Killed Me bombed at the box office).

Lohan's rehab stint almost gets her fired

In case you haven't been paying attention, Lindsay Lohan is a train wreck. Whether she's passed out in front of clubs, flashing photographers, or taking compromising photos with large kitchen knives, it's like LiLo is actually trying to ruin her career.

And thanks to her recent rehab stint, she almost succeeded.

Lohan is supposed to be the face of Jill Stuart's fall 2007 collection -- a major fashion label that does a large portion of its business in Japan. However, after photos of Lohan passed out in the front seat of her friend's SUV hit front pages worldwide, the Japanese licensee (who paid for the original photo shoot) threatened to pull the plug.

Jill Stuart's CEO denies this, saying the ad campaign will be seen internationally -- including in Japan -- but it sounds like one more slip up might make the threats a reality. Something tells me that won't be long coming.
