J.Lo's controversial turban

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the revival of the turban. To tell you the truth, I really didn't actually think that I would actually see someone wearing a turban in real life.

But given what Jennifer Lopez wore to the VMA's earlier this week, I have to admit that I stand corrected. As you can see from the photograph, J.Lo is sporting a razzle-dazzle turban in a fabric that matches her somewhat matronly-looking dress.

How did it work?

Well, not well. J.Lo dressed like she's undergoing chemo, not emceeing a glamorous awards show. But in her defense, I can't imagine that anyone else could have successfully rocked that look -- except, of course, Joan Collins.

Fall trends: Turbans

Filed under: Runway Trends, Stores We Love, Clothing

Both a symbol of religious devotion and a way of keeping one's dome warm, turbans are traditional headwear utitlized by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

But turbans aren't just for sheiks and characters played by Joan Collins and/or Rudolph Valentino ... at least not anymore. This fall, Biba, Louis Vuitton and Chloe all have turban hats in their collections.

While turbans are not exactly something on my "must-have for fall" list, I'd imagine that they are on the Xmas list of one Alexis Morrell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan.

Nightgowns as dresses

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie

In yesterday's New York Times Style section, Ellen Tien noted the revival of a recurring fashion trend: underwear as outerwear. But instead of, say, wearing a camisole as a top (so last fall!) or sporting a bustier under a jacket (so Madonna in 1989), this look takes a nightgown and makes it into a sundress.

This will sound a little risque at first -- especially if when you think of "nightgown" you envision Joan Collins in Dynasty. However, the chemise nighties at stores like Anthropologie could plausibly pass as regular summer sundresses. My favorite is the Orion nightgown, which has mother of pearl buttons on the placket of the empire-waisted "dress". In a chocolate brown cotton voile, this nightgown-turned-daygown could easily make the transition into fall when matched with a pair of boots and a feminine cardigan.
