Keds Goes Green with Loomstate

Opt for eco-friendly and fashionable kicks! Keds and Loomstate have teamed up for a line of environmentally conscious slip-ons. Photo courtesy of Keds

Launching exclusively at Barneys today (June 15), Keds has teamed up with Loomstate for a summer collection of sustainable and organic versions of its iconic canvas sneaker.

The capsule collection consists of five printed, slip-on styles with organic uppers and linings and a 100 percent recycled insole. Just to be thorough, each pair will also come in a recycled, re-used shoe box and forgo the usual tissue paper inside.

A percentage of the proceeds will go to Organic Exchange, an organization that supports sustainable and organic farming.

At $75 a pair, they may not be the cheapest pair of Keds you've ever owned, but they are definitely the greenest!

Earth Day Round-up

Earth from the apollo space craftThe fashion industry is promoting guilt-free shopping today in honor of Earth Day. Designers really want you to reduce your eco-footprint by purchasing their various wares. (Aww, isn't that sweet?) Here's how:

  • Target's first eco-friendly designer collaboration, Loomstate for Target, has hit stores just in time for you to pull together your edgy, organic-cotton look for Earth Day fetes.

  • Looking to add to your monogrammed luggage set? If you shop online at Louis Vuitton today, the luxury retailer will donate 15% of all purchases on their US website to The Climate Project. FYI, The Climate Project is an organization founded by Al Gore, who also helped invent the internet. (How's that for synergy?)

  • Pretty Little Thing NYC is selling a globe necklace to commemorate the planet's special day. The rest of the year, the globe revolves around you ... er, your neck. A portion of the proceeds from these babies are going to The Wilderness Society.

  • Did you know Donna Karan is a total natural wellness hippie? Check out this video of Donna explaining some of the techniques and benefits of holistic medicine and her new project Urban Zen. BTW, she's designed a bunch of awesome tees that benefit charity, available exclusively at Tonic.

  • Keds has revamped their classic kicks for Earth Day. Not only are their Green Label shoes made of organic cotton and recycled rubber, but for each pair sold, Keds plants a tree. Friday is Arbor Day people!

  • Anthopologie hooked up with Edun (the brainchild of Bono's wife Ali Hewson) for a line of Bee Tees. These 100% organic tees will bring awareness to the alarming disappearance of honeybees. All while making you look fashionable and socially-conscious, of course.

  • Don't throw out your old cosmetic containers. Origins has teamed up with Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford to launch a cosmetics recycling program. All Origins counters (even the ones inside department stores) will accept empty cosmetic containers from any brand.

keds

In the name of going green, Keds has revamped its classic kicks to comply with a more eco-conscious company. The new Keds Green Label is, as you might have guessed, made of organic cotton and recycled rubber. But that's not all friends. In a fantastic collaboration, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree for each pair of Green Label shoes sold. No better way to help a greater cause and indulge yourself at the same time. It is also a perfect way to celebrate upcoming Earth Day if you aren't the type to get out there and plant some trees on your own.

Keds That Show Off Your Inner Beauty, Internal Organs

Keds featuring anatomically incorrect internal organsWhat is it with clothing that showcases human anatomy? The kinda cute, kinda gross x-ray motif always seems to make for awesome geek chic clothes that you just can't seem to take your eyes off -- kinda like a bad car wreck. That's the type of awesome yet geeky vibe that we get from these anatomical/polka dot Keds on Zazzle. We do have a few criticisms though, like: why are they only available in woman's sizes?

Support your candidate with your shoes

Political t-shirts? So over. Your candidate on underwear? Yes-ter-day! The newest cool way to show your support is to emblazon your candidate across a pair of Keds.

Through the magic of digital print on demand, Zazzle.com lets you put pretty much any picture on any item and sell it through their online marketplace.

Taking advantage of this technology, dozens of enthusiastic Obama supporters have customized Keds with their artistic interpretation of his likeness.

Mr. McCain also has a selection of shoes that bear his likeness, although we must admit that his supporters are both more traditional and more conservative.

We love a comfy skimmer as much as the next girl, but we're not sure how well this political statement translates into a fashion statement. At least they're easier to change than a bumper sticker.

In the gallery, see what the "shoe designers" came up with for your candidate.

Keds float in and out of style, varying in popularity by season, location, and, of course, demographic. But one thing that's always in style is owning custom shoes, which you can now design online at Keds Studio.

You don't need to be an artist. In fact, you don't even need to be all that creative. You start with selecting whether you want women's or children's (sorry, guys -- nothing for you just yet), choose your style, and then, the fun begins! You choose the colors and prints you want for each part of the shoe -- you can even select colored eyelets! We're going to warn you -- it's slightly addictive. We wasted half an hour of our morning playing around there already.

Nanette Lepore for Keds: Spring/Summer 2008

Oh, Keds! How do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

The white canvas and leather lace ups stayed on our feet during everyday during elementary school. And as adults, we always make sure our closets include at least two pairs of adorable printed skimmers.

Nanette Lepore kicks it with Keds

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Shoes, Celebrities with Style

New York designer Nanette Lepore is a cult-favorite here in the U.S. and abroad. Sophisticated, quirky and retro, Nanette Lepore clothes make you feel like Grace Kelly dipped in Carrie Bradshaw with a twist of Patsy Cline. It sounds weird, but it looks awesome.

Lepore-lovers who can't quite stomach the idea of a $700 suit can now partake in the plucky delight of this unique brand through a budget design collaboration. Nanette Lepore has joined forces with Keds to create a limited edition line of flats. The ultra-comfortable shoes blend Audrey Hepburn's casual style with Nanette Lepore's signature details: bright prints, stripes, romantic calligraphy, bows and jewels.

With celebrities like Mischa Barton and Gwen Stefani stepping out in the kicky Keds, these shoes are selling out fast. So if you're interested, you might want to get on it, stat!

Remember when: Outback Red

In a time long ago, in a shopping mall far, far away, there was a store called The Limited, and it sold a brand known as "Outback Red".

Outback Red shirts were long-sleeved tees, with three little buttons in front and a very conspicuous "Outback Red" logo at the scruff of the neck in back. Every girl between the ages of 8 and 16 had several of them -- remember this was the mid-to-late 80s, and with Members Only jackets and Keds on the wane, something had to come up into the void.

What this brand ever had to do with the Australian outback remains unclear to me. What is clear is that the Outback Red brand, like so much of the 80s, has virtually disappeared from memory.
