What does it take to win the Kentucky Derby? This hat!

Okay, so an amazing hat won't win the race, but we're actually not terribly interested in that part anyway. We're far more fascinated by the hats that the Derby brings out, and the Kentucky Derby Museum has chosen the hat with which it is most impressed this year -- Gena Conti Millinery's Orange Ade.

Angie Shultz: Hatmaker extraordinaire

Filed under: Style in the News

As we mentioned earlier, the Kentucky Derby took place this past weekend.

While we won't discuss the tragic and untimely death of Eight Belles -- the horse who broke down after the race and had to be euthanized (R.I.P.) -- we do want to give a major shout out to Angie Shultz, hatmaker extraordinaire, for keeping all of the event images looking interesting.

Several of the over-the-top head pieces worn by some of our favorite celebs were made by the legendary designer.

In this clip, watch as the very proud southern woman explains to Wall Street Journal reporter Beckey Bright that a women's hat at the Kentucky Derby is the piece de resistance of her entire ensemble. Enjoy!

In case you weren't yet aware, the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday. And, in addition to a fabulous hat, you need jewelry, right? But what jewelry to wear? Should you dig the diamonds out of the vault? Go classic with pearls? Find something that matches your millinery?

Make your own Kentucky Derby hat

Kentucky Derby fashion is most excellent, escpecially the hats. They are truly the definition of fabulous, and they just wouldn't do anywhere else.

However, not everyone can afford to spend $100 or more on a hat that might not be worn more than once, especially if it's just for a party and not for the Derby itself. In that case, you might want to create your own hat.

The crazy fashions of the Kentucky Derby

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

The Kentucky Derby brings with it so much excitement -- the parties, the betting, the race itself -- but none of that comes close to the excitement of the fashions.

Of course, the hats are the main draw -- from the fabulously funky to the terribly tacky, unique hats (for the men as well as for the ladies) are an absolute must. But one can't get away with wearing only a hat to the Derby. (Seriously. Don't try it.) When it comes to clothing, here's what you can expect:

Decorating for your Kentucky Derby party

The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner (Saturday, May 3) -- what are your plans? If you're not heading to Louisville, you can still enjoy the festivities of the event by hosting a fabulous party in your home.

If you want to keep some of the Derby traditions in tact, you'll need to serve some particular drinks and dishes, but even before the food comes out, you'll want to set the tone with decor. Here are two ways to decorate, going along with the two types of Derby-goers (Millionaire's Row and the infield).

Fashionable food and drink for your Kentucky Derby Party

A stylish party is one part fabulous atmosphere, one part gorgeous guests, and one part fashionable food and drink -- a Kentucky Derby party is no exception.

First things first -- you can't celebrate the Derby without serving up mint juleps. This is the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, made of sugar, water, mint, and bourbon (or variations thereof). Ideally, they should be served in a chilled, silver cup (which are fun gifts for your guests to take home).

Holy water? Not quite

Filed under: Fashionable Food, Style in the News

First, we had designer ice cubes. Today, we have Style.com's item of the week -- Santa Maria Novella Water, from the luxurious producer of fragrances, soaps, and herbal remedies.

This "instant cure" water dates back to the 17th century when women dressed in ridiculously too tight corsets would faint -- and this "potion" would come to the rescue. Apparently, this tiny bottle can also help ease motion sickness and improve digestion.

$13 for such a small bottle of what could potentially be straight out of the tap? Wait -- what if you put designer ice cubes into a glass of Santa Maria Novella Water?

This somehow reminds me of the $1000 mint julep served at the Kentucky Derby this year, equipped with ice straight from the Arctic.
