Ashley Olsen gettin' it on with Lance Armstrong?

Half of the world's most famous pair of fashion twins has been spotted with Lance Armstrong lately. Gossip columnists seem convinced that it's Ashley, but I still can't tell those Olsen sisters apart -- so who knows which twin has actually been engaging in serious PDA with the Tour de France champion.

Could this mean The Row will start making cycling gear? Probably not. But will it mean Lance Armstrong will be totally creeped out every time he watches Full House re-runs -- realizing that the first time he saw 3-year-old Michelle Tanner nauseate audiences with "You got it, dude!" he was in high school?

Absolutely.

Political fashion by Heavy Rotation

Is it possible to wear your politics? I mean, in some fashion than the usual 19-year-old-in-a-Che-Guevara-t-shirt kind of way?

Sure, people have worn political buttons for years, and ribbons (red for AIDS awareness, pink for breast cancer awareness and so on) and wristbands (yellow for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and cancer awareness, green for Darfur awareness). But is it possible to be both stylish and political?

Heavy Rotation believes you can be stylish, political and ambiguous. On the back of this vintage fatigue jacket is, yes, a patch of camouflage. But look closely, my friends -- inside the camouflage you'll see a white dove.

Definitely cooler than a bumper sticker, but at $68, it's also way more expensive.

Fixed gear bikes

Fixed gear bikes make life simple, right? One gear, one speed. No coasting, no brakes (you slow down by putting backward pressure on the pedals, kind of like the coaster brake you had on your bike as a kid. Except that now you're riding in traffic). Nothing to break and nothing to steal.

Back in the day, fixies were the ride of choice for bike messengers, punks, hipsters, angry young men and women with piercings aplenty. But a quick look at what's locked up outside my local Starbucks has yielded an unmistakable truth: yuppies are riding these things.

So, are fixed-gear bikes cool? Well, it depends:
  • is danger cool?
  • is a take-your-$3500-Lance-Armstrong-wannabe-bike-and-shove-it attitude cool?
  • is bare-bones, frill-free simplicity cool? (a follow-up: how many of you are reading this via dial-up?)
Like most things, the relative coolness of fixies is complicated.

One thing's clear, however: don't stop pedaling.
