FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Backstage Beauty at Nicole Farhi

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips

Nicole Farhi model makeup
SHOW:
NICOLE FARHI

MAKEUP:
VAL GARLAND FOR M.A.C

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT:
Irreverent innocence -- an update on forties glamour

face chartTHE SCOOP:
"The look is irreverent innocence, 1940's, beautiful dewy skin and a sinful mouth," says Garland, the lead makeup artist at the Farhi show. With the beautifully wearable, softly structured silhouettes, the wine-stained lips and warm, misty (not smoky) eyes just made sense. For a change, the models were not completely mattified, and let me tell you, a little moisture goes a long way for gorgeous looking skin. The look was ladylike and sexy-empowering. Strong brows were the perfect foil for all the rich fabrics and jewel tones. This was a show to inspire a head-to-toe fall makeover.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: Garland blended M.A.C Pro Gloss in Copper Walnut from lid to brow, patted it across the eyes with her fingers and wrapped down around to the tops of the cheek bones. Then she created satiny skin with Moistureblend Foundation applied only where needed. M·A·C Pro Lipsticks in Dark Purple and Sin were pressed onto the lips with her fingers for a dark stain with hazy edges.

FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Backstage Beauty at House of Holland

SHOW:
HOUSE OF HOLLAND

MAKEUP: LUCIA PICA FOR M.A.C

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT:
From the neck up, she's a lady

house of holland face chartTHE SCOOP: I can't help but think of art class when reporting on House of Holland's fall collection. On the other hand, if you look at the models from the neck up, you might feel as Lucia Pica did: "she's a polished sophisticated woman, a femme fatale." While the clothes were a straight-up homage to Pantone chips, the beauty was classically feminine. Pica gave us an unexpected jolt of deep burgundy on the lips and smoky eyes that were inspired by the 1920's. I guess this is the ultimate expression of Forrest Gump-fashion week is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP:
For the eyes, Pica used M.A.C Pro Chromaline in Black Black and White, mixed together and blended over a layer of Vaseline in a round 1920's shape over the eyelids creating a sheer gray wash. She dabbed Clear Lipglass under the inner corners of the eyes. She defined the face with Sculpting Powder in Sculpt, low on the cheekbones. To complete the look, Pica painted on Lipstick in Cyber with a brush for a precise 1920's shape, then patted on Lip Mix in Crimson over the first layer to create a more reddish purple.

FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Backstage Beauty at Todd Lynn

SHOW:
TODD LYNN

MAKEUP:
TERRY BARBER FOR M.A.C

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT:
Tilda Swinton in a remake of Mad Max that's set in Siberia – an ecclesiastic natural beauty

todd lynn face chartTHE SCOOP: There's nothing forgiving about skintight black leather pants, but they sure do look hot on models with impossibly skinny, long legs. Paired with body-skimming jackets and sky high Louboutins, London designer Todd Lynn's collection was certainly chic, if a bit grim in its austerity. Terry Barber's description of the makeup inspiration for the show followed suit: "Imagine Tilda Swinton in a remake of Mad Max but set in Siberia – ecclesiastic natural beauty." Though that reference is a bit obscure, it's not lost on me as I look at the models' pale, matte skin, peach-rimmed eyes and grey-tinged lips. Grey lips are an emerging trend we've been seeing at both NY and London Fashion Week. It'll be interesting to see it this trend continues, or if it makes it off the runways and on to our lips.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP:
Barber brushed M·A·C Pro Loose Powder in Peach along the lower lashline and applied it over lids to set the concealer creating a "tired peach" lid. Next was M.A.C Pro Eye Pencil in Pale Yellow drawn into waterline and between lashes, which were combed through with Select Cover-up Concealer. Lip Conditioner blended with Eye Pencil in Ebony were applied to the lips in a thin, sheer layer.

FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Backstage Beauty at Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips

SHOW:
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL

MAKEUP:
GORDON ESPINET FOR M.A.C

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: High school cliques – are you a Siren, a Prep or a Goth?

THE SCOOP: Westwood's Red Label show hit on all her signature moves: tartan, corsets, décolletage, asymmetry and debauchery. The designs ran the gamut from loose knits to tight, tailored dresses and suits, so it's no wonder there were so many makeup looks to go with them. The venerable Gordon Espinet, makeup guru at M.A.C, explained that the looks were inspired by girls in different high school cliques. He certainly had his team working overtime to produce fierce eyes and lips-just not on the same girls.

GET THE LOOK - THE SIRENS:
The cat eye makes a comeback with M·A·C Fluidline gel liner in Blacktrack applied to the top lashline in a 1950's wing shape. Espinet finished the look with Pro Lash in Coal Black on the top and bottom lashlines.

GET THE LOOK - THE PREPS: For these lush lips, use M·A·C Lipstick in Girl About Town – applied as an opaque layer of fuchsia, followed by Cremesheen Glass in Ever So Rich.

GET THE LOOK - THE GOTHS:
Espinet created a dark, goth mouth with M·A·C Pro Lipstick in Full Chocolate.

FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Backstage Beauty at Giles

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips

model makeup at Giles
SHOW:
GILES

MAKEUP:
MIRANDA JOYCE FOR M.A.C.

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Lite-brite lips

face chartTHE SCOOP:
"The collection is quite structured so I wanted the look to be a bit undone-that's why we've purposely smudged the lip a little bit. It's a true bright matt-ish red but patted on so you get this soft, sexy mouth," explains Joyce. With clothes that are black, white and gray all over, your eyes are immediately drawn to the blazing red lips. I guess that means nude lips won't be the only game in town come fall, which is great news for all the pale-skinned ladies.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP:
Joyce blended M.A.C Ruby Woo And Lady Danger Lipsticks together and patted them repeatedly onto the lips to create a soft round shape. The edges of the lips were smudged just before the girls walked down the runway.

FALL 2009 FASHION WEEK - Backstage Beauty at Peter Jensen

SHOW:
PETER JENSEN

MAKEUP: HANNAH MURRAY FOR M.A.C.

BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Windswept flush

face chart peter jensonTHE SCOOP: Since the Danish government furnished Jensen with a research trip to Greenland and the Faeroe Islands, the collection featured layers of schoolgirl clothes. There were tights, capes, knit hats, plaids, cross-stitch patterns and short skirts. And thanks to Murray's vision for the makeup, "inspired by pictures of inuits – it's that beautiful wind-burned flush low on the cheek – weathered but still very pretty," the look really comes together. Even the hair looks a bit mussed from the elements. Our prediction? If you like Anna Sui's flower child frocks, you'll love Peter Jensen's Scandinavian school uniforms.

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: Murray imparted an outdoorsy glow to the cheeks with M.A.C Pro Studio Finish Skin Correctors in Caramel and Terracotta. They were blended together as a low round flush. She gave the lips an orangey stain with Orange and Yellow Lip Mix patted on and then wiped off.

London Fashion Week: Farhi casts her vote on the runway

In the wake of what many are calling a snooze of a NY fashion week, it seems that many designers have seized upon London Fashion Week as an opportunity to branch out, try something outrageous, or even try to drum up support for their favorite candidate. Though London seems like an unlikely place to appeal to American voters, that didn't stop Nicole Farhi from replacing the traditional brooch with a "Obama '08" campaign pin.

While the French designer is not a registered voter in the US, she's managed to work her way into what has to be the most intensely fashion-oriented campaign in decades. It seems like a candidate's fashion choices have become an important dimension for many sartorially-inclined voters. Obama is good-looking, McCain wears expensive shoes, Biden is a snazzy dresser, Palin is bringing back the sexy librarian look -- that stuff's important, right?

We're pretty sure that we've never seen this level of wearable propaganda in either depth or breadth. Whether its shoes, boxer briefs, thongs, glasses or hairstyles there seems to be a way to express your partisan ideology with it.

Pretty, punky princesses at Luella Bartley show

So what would you wear if you were an 18th century socialite with a penchant for pearls who was pulled through a time warp and landed in the 1980s? My guess would be one of the runway beauties at the Luella Bartley Spring 2009 show in London.

London's Fashion Week's version of "The Tents"

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fashion Week

By now you are already familiar with New Fashion Week's massive tent structure. The legendary tents have a counterpart in London. I snapped a picture this morning as I headed into the shows. Whereas New York's tents are pitched close to super busy Time Square on 42nd street, London's are pitched in South Kensington next to the legendary Victoria & Albert Museum. It's no less busy, but somehow it feels more peaceful.

Diane Von Furstenberg's right man hand reveals the Inspiration for his colorful show

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fashion Week

Ever heard of Nathan Jenden? You got a gold star and a high five if you have. The British designer is a quiet star in the fashion industry, having worked for John Galliano, Kenzo, and Tommy Hilfiger before his current gig as Creative Director at Diane Von Furstenberg.

Somehow while helping to churn out spectacular clothes at that label, he also does the same at his own label, Nathan Jenden. I had the pleasure of attending his Spring 2009 collection today and meeting him after the show. He was very excited about his collection and the warm reception it received.

See my favorite looks from his collection under the cut.

Jaded ballerinas on an African Safari at the Rochas show during London Fashion Week

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fashion Week

So let's say you were a jaded ballerina going on an African safari to forget your pain, what would you wear? Why, John Rocha's Spring 2009 collection. The designer has got you totally covered, from chiffon zebra prints layered over bright yellow dresses for your daytime activities to dark, dainty a-line dresses for evening festivities Rocha's collection is your one stop shop.

This Hong Kong native who has lived in the U.K for the past thirty years (first England, then Ireland) is an old-timer in the fashion industry, but I continue to love him for his fresh, youthful take on clothes.

London Fashion Week overlooks the skinny model issue

Filed under: Style in the News

There was a general consensus last week that all of the models walking the runways under the Bryant Park tents looked considerably more healthy than last season. It was also noted that several models were actually turned away during New York Fashion Week for being too thin and unhealthy looking.

This is a great step in the right direction after very popular mannequins like Coco Rocha and Ali Michael both spoke out earlier this year about the pressures to stay thin in the modeling industry and the life-threatening techniques the two girls used to maintain those unrealistic weights of theirs.

But that aside, it appears the London crowd is far less indifferent about letting rail thin models stomp their runways.

As London Fashion Week kicked off on Monday, the models appeared to be just as tiny as they were the previous season. Last year, the British Fashion Council "announced plans to require models to obtain a health certificate to prevent them from developing and concealing eating problems" but those plans were thrown right out the window once the industry began to get annoyed with the "healthy" thing.

Luckily, though, supermodel Erin O' Connor launched the "Model Sanctuary" this season, a place where models can "eat and drink health foods for free, learn about the risks of eating disorders, and have access to a concierge who can provide information about London to make it easier and safer for them to enjoy their brief time in the British capital."

It's not going to have that much of an impact considering girls are fearful that if they eat anything they won't be able to book their shows, but at least it's start in the right direction.
