Quick Hits...Louis Vuitton 2010 Cruise Collection

Louis Vuitton presented a sunny Cruise collection yesterday - transporting rain-soaked editors from the dreary streets of New York to the fabulous French Riviera. Continuing with the house's coquette theme from Fall (read: mini proportions in rich fabrics, with a healthy does of Lacroix and YSL references), LV's flamboyant party girl was still in tact. This time, she traversed the Côte d'Azur in micro-shorts, tiny tweed suits, a black patent trench and fisherman's hat, rope jewelry, and slouchy sequin open-toe pirate boots.

Accessories are the backbone of the house, and pumps decorated with leather rosettes were particular stand outs. They also introduced a monogram-print nylon bag. Fashion is all about legs right now-long and bare-and LV's designer, Marc Jacobs, has taken hemlines to new heights. Skirts were so abbreviated, one editor commented that the luxury brand must be saving money on fabric. But the press office assured me that in the stores, there will longer versions, for a less brazen customer.

Luxe Brands Opening Pop-Up Shops

Luxury shopping in Tokyo. Photo by Getty Images

Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Hermès have started a new trend in luxe retail -- The Pop-Up Shop. Once reserved for mass brands like Target and Levi's, high-end brands are now recognizing the value of these now you see us, now you don't stores.

A great way to make something special is to make it only available for a limited time. Maybe that's why there's a new kind of luxury boutique popping up -- the kind that swiftly disappears.

According to WWD:
"Europe's luxury players are suddenly enamored with more modest, temporary stores. ... Vuitton, which opened a temporary store in Tokyo last winter to showcase a collaboration with Comme des Garçons and its iconoclastic designer Rei Kawakubo, will open another time-limited retail venture in the Japanese capital later this month while the French brand awaits a permanent location at the new Seibu Ikebukuro department store in 2010. ... The temporary store will look the part: surrounded by scaffolding, wrapped in white mesh and with a raw interior with sections defined by stacked wooden crates (although the products themselves will sit on elegant, padded shelves)."

Today is a huge day for Louis Vuitton, and a monumental one for its loyal followers. For the first time in the luxury brand's history, LV will introduce an item exclusively online.

The "Totally Monogram" tote (right) is now available in three different sizes, and better yet, the chic carryall is fashionable, functional and clickable. A new spring bag delivered to your door -- it doesn't get much better than that.

And, since the tote doesn't debut in retail stores until June 1st, you can beat the masses and snap one up before they're gone.

Silly Rabbit, Trix Are For Kids! (And Madonna)

Madonna strikes an appropriately playful pose. Photo by Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images

Madge has arrived!!! And not surprisingly, she made a grand entrance to The Met's Costume Institute Gala in Louis Vuitton (whose campaign she is currently the face of and will be again next season).

The fashion chameleon (right) wore a ruched taffeta bubble-hem dress with Wicked Witch of the West thigh-high boots.

There were a few nods to her Material Girl past: black fingerless gloves, a diamond cross pendant and "Borderline"-esque rabbit ears. (Don't let the retro antenna-like hairpiece fool you, this star is definitely in high definition!)

Earth Day Round-up

Earth from the apollo space craftThe fashion industry is promoting guilt-free shopping today in honor of Earth Day. Designers really want you to reduce your eco-footprint by purchasing their various wares. (Aww, isn't that sweet?) Here's how:

  • Target's first eco-friendly designer collaboration, Loomstate for Target, has hit stores just in time for you to pull together your edgy, organic-cotton look for Earth Day fetes.

  • Looking to add to your monogrammed luggage set? If you shop online at Louis Vuitton today, the luxury retailer will donate 15% of all purchases on their US website to The Climate Project. FYI, The Climate Project is an organization founded by Al Gore, who also helped invent the internet. (How's that for synergy?)

  • Pretty Little Thing NYC is selling a globe necklace to commemorate the planet's special day. The rest of the year, the globe revolves around you ... er, your neck. A portion of the proceeds from these babies are going to The Wilderness Society.

  • Did you know Donna Karan is a total natural wellness hippie? Check out this video of Donna explaining some of the techniques and benefits of holistic medicine and her new project Urban Zen. BTW, she's designed a bunch of awesome tees that benefit charity, available exclusively at Tonic.

  • Keds has revamped their classic kicks for Earth Day. Not only are their Green Label shoes made of organic cotton and recycled rubber, but for each pair sold, Keds plants a tree. Friday is Arbor Day people!

  • Anthopologie hooked up with Edun (the brainchild of Bono's wife Ali Hewson) for a line of Bee Tees. These 100% organic tees will bring awareness to the alarming disappearance of honeybees. All while making you look fashionable and socially-conscious, of course.

  • Don't throw out your old cosmetic containers. Origins has teamed up with Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford to launch a cosmetics recycling program. All Origins counters (even the ones inside department stores) will accept empty cosmetic containers from any brand.

Designers Drop Prices to Get Right with Your Wallet

Filed under: Style in the News, Steals and Deals

closeup of Lacoste alligatorWondering how you're going to afford your next piece of designer clothing? Good news, you might not have to donate plasma after all. Taking a cue from last year's brutal (for retailers) holiday season, designers like Lacoste, Coach and a host of others will be dropping their price points significantly. The idea is to avoid another winter of retailers marking their wares down 70% -- which is not so good for a designer's ego.

Photos and pricing info has been uncovered by the sneakerphiles at Nice Kicks, and apparently the numbers have all been confirmed. Louis Vuitton and Danity Kane Settle Lawsuit

Filed under: Style in the News

More tragic news for pop group Danity Kane. Not only did the once studious ex-member Aubrey O'Day (remember when she almost chose college over the group in the first season of "Making the Band?"), turn into a drugged out nightmare of a publicity whore; the group has now had to settle a lawsuit with luxury brand Louis Vuitton. Bummer.

Rose Byrne in Louis Vuitton - I Want That!

rose bryneAt the amfAR New York Gala To Kick Off Fall 2009 Fashion Week, Rose Byrne, for lack of better wording, completely killed it in this Louis Vuitton dress. It's such a mixture of opposing elements – romantic but fierce; sophisticated but playful; simple but complicated. We'll stop before we go into a tangent. But just know that this dress is it for us!

We also love the makeup for spring. The soft, slightly glossed orangey coral lip is right on trend for spring. Paired with barely there blush and minimal eye makeup, the look is totally crisp and a refreshing change from the bold red lip of last spring.

Michelle Monaghan and Mary Alice Stevenson at the amfAR New York Gala - Double StyleFoul

The NME awards are notorious for eccentric fashion choices, but none of them could compare to the outfit "created" by "music artist" La Roux. Wow.

    Getty Images

Naomi's extra-long gown at the Vanity Fair Oscar afterparty seemed familiar. So we checked and, sure enough, we had seen it before -- on Daryl Hannah in the 1984 hit movie Splash!!

    Everett Collection/Getty Images

Michelle Monaghan sports an orange Louis Vuitton dress with a sequined side cut out. And tulle. And net. And mesh. And matching LV shoes with feathers. Will it ever stop?

    Getty Images

Keira Knightley's smug expression is just begging us to judge this outfit that's somehow too small and too big at the same time.

    Getty Images

We just have two questions: Why is Tilda Swinton wearing the human flesh dress made by serial killer Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs? And couldn't she at least have it tailored to fit her?

Neither the color green nor those unfortunate shoulder pads are helping Jennifer Connelly look any healthier on the red carpet -- girl needs to eat!

    Getty Images

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, went pattern crazy while playing with the puppies at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Centre in Cornwall, UK.

    Getty Images

Up-and-coming Australian actress Teresa Palmer is drop-dead gorgeous. The shiny hair, the bright, expressive eyes, the thin-but-not-scary-skinny body ... she seems to have the whole package. Except, maybe, for the whole dressing for the red carpet part.

    Getty Images

The thing is, we love the fit of this dress -- it's super flattering and classy. And Teresa shines in light colors, so the white and beige is beautiful. But seriously, what is the deal with the beige bra cups?

Should we get past the weird boob accessories since we love the rest of the look so much? Or are those a deal breaker?

    Getty Images

Of course Teresa isn't the only celeb who suffers from the occasional red carpet flop. Scarlett Johansson clearly has her off days.

Oversized gold coat, check. High waisted pants that are way more frumpy than fashionable, check. What the heck was Scarlett Johansson thinking when she wore this outfit to the photocall for The Spirit in Madrid? This outfit is old lady-ish, and not in the sometimes hip Mary-Kate Olsen kind of way.

Nothing promises a Hot Cup O'nutz like an amfAR event, mainly because Sharon Stone usually turns up. Sadly, Lady Stone was MIA at the amfAR New York gala to kick off Fashion Week, but there were plenty of other style-challenged ladies vying for her Crazy Couture Crown.

Of course we had LIZA!, looking kicky and medicated, wearing brown chocolate sequins and JAZZ HANDS!

Taylor Momson walked the red capet looking 45 instead of 15, as usual, in a seafoam Marchesa nightgown of tragic lost dreams.

And Anna Wintour, paired an oddly moth-eaten tiger-like coat with bare legs and open toed shoes -- in New York, in February, with temperatures in the 40s. Perhaps her signature Sneering & Peering Blonde Bob kept her warm.

But all of their efforts paled next to the tag team of Michelle Monaghan and Mary Alice Stevenson. Kudos to the intrepid photographer who conviced them to stand next to each other for photos!

Ms. Monaghan sported an orange Louis Vuitton dress with a sequined side cut out. And tulle. And net. And mesh. And matching LV shoes with feathers. It was a lotta look on a 98 pound frame!

America's Most Smartest Model host, Mary Alice Stevenson, took the budget road. She dug up Estelle Getty and stole the purple and red burial shroud off the Golden Girl's dead body. Then MA went back for Estelle's shoes. Heartless!

The combo of quilting bee accident and grave-robbing together on the red carpet delivered a one-two knockout punch and earned these two ladies a Double StyleFoul!

Make that Martin Louis the Mullet King Jr. - Kanye's Mullet

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Hair Cut and Style

Kanye performs at the 2009 GrammysFor any of you who missed the coronation of "Martin Louis the King Jr.," formerly known as "The Louis Vuitton Don," Stylelist posted the video a few weeks ago. One thing you might have noticed about the new Kanye West in the video is a vaguely familiar hairdo -- one that showed up again this week at the Grammys. What do they call it again? Oh yeah -- the mullet. Only the most despised and berated hairstyle on planet earth, popularized in the 80's by pro-wrestlers and other goons. Kanye, on the other hand is a very fashionable guy. What gives?

Oh, Kanye. Our dear rapper friend has outdone himself once again. Just when we thought his Louis Vuitton moment was over, he goes and creates this nice minute and a half video. Those who have consumed the artist's last four albums should be well aware of the fact that Mr. West has arbitrarily named himself the "Louis Vuitton Don."

Revealed, Kanye West's Hi-Top Louis Vuitton Sneaker

Filed under: Style in the News

Last week, Kanye West's highly anticipated sneaker collection with Louis Vuitton was finally unveiled at the luxury label's menswear presentation in Paris. Not only did front row guests get to see the pearly white low-top shoes that TMZ spotted the rapper donning a while back, but they also caught a first look at the candy-colored hi-tops 'Ye also made for LV.

While the sneakers are admittedly a little too rich for our blood, we imagine lots of luxury consumers and dedicated sneaker heads will be sporting a pair by this summer. Recently, the AP caught up with the man of the hour to discuss his project with LV and as usual, Mr. West doesn't fail to disappoint with the sound bites. Watch and enjoy.

Behind the Scences, Madonna's Spring '09 Louis Vuitton ad Campaign

Filed under: Style in the News

Now, you've already read our lament on Madonna's ads for Louis Vuitton. While we love us some British-sounding Madge just as much as the next person, the whole "I'm being controversial so let me show you my crotch in these ads" thing is pretty annoying, to say the least. Indeed, we were expecting a little something more from this collaboration but the behind-the-scenes video makes up for all of that. In the clip, Madonna and Marc Jacobs -- who is creative director at Louis Vuitton -- playfully bantering back and forth, telling each other how "hot" and "cool" they are. Enjoy the fabulous accessories and tinges of narcissism.
