Recession Takes a Bite Out of Puma

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

Geeky pair of Puma high topsWe're struggling to make sense out of this one. Earlier this week, Puma sportswear announced that its net-earnings in the 4th quarter were down 78.8%. Ouch. That surprises us because: a.) dude, we freakin' love Puma's geeky shoes, and b.) labels on the mid-lower end seem to be the only ones doing any business these days. Apparently, any brand that hasn't hammered out a distribution deal with Wal-Mart is totally screwed.

Puma joins with Luke Wilson and Johan Edfors on new golf line

According to Puma Talk: "Luke Wilson, actor and avid golfer, teamed up with PUMA golf star Johan Edfors to create a special edition range of PUMA Golf products for this spring and summer." The line will launch in April and July, respectively.

Said Wilson, "To work with a brand like PUMA – that has such innovative and versatile product – on a golf line that fits my style and personality has been a real pleasure. We had some real fun with some of the product designs including the Porkpie hat and C-hopper shoe that you can wear on or off the course by just removing the spikes."

Luke Wilson designs for Puma Golf

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Videos, Celebrities with Style

We've seen him in the role of tennis superstar Richie "the baumer" Tenenbaum, but most people aren't aware that Luke Wilson is actually a kick-butt golfer. In fact, he's listed as one of the Top 40 Hollywood golfers. That's why he teamed up with Swedish golfing sensation Johan Edfors to put together a collection of golf apparel set to be released this spring. The two were selected by Puma to design this summer's chrome collection -- part of a conscious effort to bring some style and "bling" back into the boring world of golf attire.

MovieStyle: Bottle Rocket

Filed under: Style in the News

Forget The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Forget The Royal Tenenbaums. Forget even Rushmore. Before any of these movies came along, there was Bottle Rocket.

Wes Anderson's first foray into filmmaking was co-written with Owen Wilson, and the movie is the film debut of both Owen and brother Luke Wilson. Fans of Wes Anderson will recognize many of his hallmarks: quirky characters, absurd but recognizable situations, a soundtrack of obscure but amazing songs and an underwater scene.

But Bottle Rocket was made with what appears to be a budget of about $763, so the hot outfits of Mr. Anderson's later movies (like the Adidas "Zissou" shoes in The Life Aquatic) are a bit lower-budget. Indeed, in Bottle Rocket, the best we get are matching day-glo orange jumpsuits and coordinated Breathe-Rite nose strips.

It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for this movie, however.

Stylefoul: the terry cloth wristband

Filed under: Accessories, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

When will the terry cloth wristband disappear into the same abyss that the visor -- the 2002 accessory that no man-child could be without -- has disappeared into?

A terrycloth headband is one thing. Luke Wilson had a cool thing going with the Bjorn Borg-style terry cloth headband in The Royal Tannenbaums (and at least he had the good sense to back it up with a Bjorn Borg-style beard). Meanwhile, Rasheed Wallace -- the Detroit Pistons' power forward -- wears a red terry cloth headband from time to time. And I'm sure not going to tell him it's not cool.

But the terry cloth wristband? If you really want one, Von Dutch has one for $10.

And if you really want, I'm sure I can round you up a visor for free ...
