Make your own Kentucky Derby hat

Kentucky Derby fashion is most excellent, escpecially the hats. They are truly the definition of fabulous, and they just wouldn't do anywhere else.

However, not everyone can afford to spend $100 or more on a hat that might not be worn more than once, especially if it's just for a party and not for the Derby itself. In that case, you might want to create your own hat.

Knit your own unmentionables

As far as hobbies go, nothing is chicer than knitting and nothing is more timeless than sex. You can satisfy both of these impulses with the hand-knitted lingerie patterns from White Lies Designs.

Consider Lucy's Chemise nightie, a zesty variation on the ever-appealing wee nightgown. Because the pattern can be customized to your exact measurements, the chemise can be knitted to fit like a glove, not like an ill-fitting potato sack (yes, I mean you, Victoria's Secret!). The end result is a nightie that's feminine without being fussy and sexy without being tacky.

If you're so inspired, White Lies Designs also sells patterns for fishnet tights, thongs, tap pants and camisoles.

So for all you knitting Nellies out there, ask yourself: does your boyfriend/husband really need another scarf?

I didn't think so...

Customize your charms

Were I more handy with a soldering iron, maybe I would make my own jewelry. Given that I'm not, I'd be happy to settle for Jennifer Fisher's customizable charm jewelry.

To make your own unique bauble, first you get to pick out the chain type and length. There are quite a few options associated with this first decision: link, ball, gypsy, ankle, wrist, short necklace, long necklace...well, you get the picture. After you have the jewelry base selected, then the real fun begins when you choose from a slew of clever little charms like royal crests, circles, keys, feathers, skulls (ugh -- aren't skulls over yet?). After the decisions have been made, you can view your necklace, buy it or start all over again.
