CFDA - Vote for Your Favorite Fashion Designer... Now!

Filed under: Style in the News

Marc Jacobs vs. team Rodarte. Photos by Craig McDean for 2009 CFDA Journal

We're all for democratic fashion. And today is your last day to vote for the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Popular Vote Award!

Sponsored by L'Oréal Paris, this the first time that the public can cast votes for its favorite women's and men's designers. The winners will be announced onstage on June 15 in NYC, when the other CFDA awards, including the Swarovski Awards for Womenswear and Menswear Designers, will be given.

We are still loving Jason Wu and his creative cross-dressing, but what about Rodarte, Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang? Choices, choices!

Did your favorite designer make the exclusive list of nominees? If not, leave a comment rocking your vote.

Kate Moss - The Turbanator

Mega model and fashion icon, Kate Moss (pictured right with Marc Jacobs), arrived at The Met's Costume Institute Gala channeling a golden Greek goddess. She wore an asymmetrical, backless gold lamé toga (er, dress) with matching turban the designer custom made for the occasion.

But the headwear wasn't the most surprising part of her look! The usually fair-skinned beauty appeared much tanner than usual. (We have to wonder, did MJ take her for a spray down at his favorite fake bakery?) Faux and safe, we're sure. After all, not that long ago Marc Jacobs did run a huge skin cancer awareness campaign with T-shirts to match. You know, the one where all the celebs posed naked.

Deja Vu - Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham Skirt the Issue

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

We thought the skirt kilt and white oxford Marc Jacobs wore yesterday to The New York TImes 'Sunday with The Magazine' event looked a little familiar. Then we remembered his muse and campaign star, Victoria Beckham, donned a strikingly similar pairing to the Proenza Schouler Spring 07 fashion show.

Should we add Marc Jacobs to the list of A-listers (read: Katie Holmes) Posh dresses? Doubtful. Victoria will be wearing MJ tonight to the Met's Costume Institute Gala (stay tuned for StyleList's live coverage).

Mandals, Murses and Muggs

Sure, male celebs are rich and famous, but does that mean the rules of fashion don't apply to them? Judging by the number of Muggs (man Uggs), Mandals (man sandals), Murses (man bags) and Manpris (man capris) we've spotted on Hollywood hunks, the answer, apparently, is no! Our first culprit: Billy Ray Cyrus. Looks like Hannah Montana's dad tripped in his mandals and ripped a gigantic hole in his jeans. This entire look -- V-neck tee, soul patch and frosted hair -- is enough to make any teen, even Miley, embarrassed to be seen with dad.

    Splash News

Brad may be a dad, but that's no excuse for this overstuffed murse. Calling George Clooney -- Mr. Pitt needs a weekend with the dudes to break this habit!

For Olympian Michael Phelps, it must be hard to get dressed when you're used to wearing a Speedo 24 hours a day. These mandals belong back in Beijing -- by the pool!

    PNP/ WENN

Bono found what he was looking for while on vacation with wife Ali Hewson this summer -- a heinous pair of mulitcolored platform mandals.

    Bauer-Griffin

Matthew McConaughey has been spotted all over town with this mega-murse designed by fiance Camila Alves. "I wear her bags daily!" he says. Hey Matt -- the operative word is her!

    Splash News

Floral print blouse? Check. Pot of giant pink flowers? Check. Black alligator murse? Check. James Spader's outfit is complete.

    Splash News

"Hello? Yes, this is Hugh Jackman. This murse is available in brown leather, too? Put it on hold -- I'm on my way!"

    startraksphoto.com

Let's hope the entourage doesn't spot Jeremy Piven in these white linen drawstring manpris. The upside? A lovely slimming effect on his ankles.

    Flynetpictures

No one does murses and manpris together like Ironman Robert Downey Jr. Here, he looks absolutely delighted with his multi-pocketed weekend manbag and calf-length chinos (not to mention his grandpa hat -- nice!).

Hairspray - Back with a Vengeance

Filed under: Hair Care, Beauty Tips

Dale Bozzio, frontwoman of 80s band Missing Persons, was such a tease! Photo by Ron Wolfson, WireImage.com

At one of those too-cool-for-school fashion parties the other night, this girl sashayed into the bathroom, shoved her way in front of the mirror, and started blasting her New Wave pompadour with a huge can of hairspray.

She looked at the rest of us (who were coughing and nearly blinded) and said, "I'm sorry, but it's the only thing that works."

And did it ever.

Despite this girl's penchant for expensive-looking gear, her must-have accessory was a cheapo can of TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray, which she deemed the most critical component to her look. We watched in awe as the budget hairspray erected her avant-garde style. $4.49

Lil' Kim - "Marc Jacobs Wrote Me Every Week in Prison"

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Interviews

lil kim
Lil' Kim: Rapper, fashion provocateur, jailbird, and, now, artist. With her work hanging in Marc Jacobs' home, no less. The pint-size star, cutting the rug these days on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," says that while she was serving 10 months in jail on perjury charges in 2006, Jacobs' letters helped keep her going.

"He's one of my best friends and was actually a huge supporter when I was in prison," she said in an interview with StyleList.com. "He wrote me every week! "I decided to buy a coloring book – I'm a huge Bratz fan – and I painted the Bratz and made them all wear Marc Jacobs, and sent it to him. He blew it up and framed it, and now it's hanging in his house. So Marc Jacobs is the best."

Lil' Kim and Jacobs are long-time pals. In 2005 Jacobs announced he was designing T-shirts featuring huge photographs of Kim to benefit The Door, a New York non-profit that helps at-risk youths with everything from health care to homework. Kim said at the time that The Door had helped her while she was growing up in Brooklyn.

Kim did Jacobs solid, too, performing a raucous set the after-party following his the showing of his spring 2006 collection (the week before she went to prison). With Lil' Kim already conquering big stages in the worlds of music and dance, can we expect to see the Bratz hanging at MoMA someday? After the jump, photos of the fashion-forward star.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Marc Jacobs

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fashion Week, Beauty Tips

SHOW:
Marc Jacobs
MAKEUP: François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics
BEAUTY SNAPSHOT: Nightclubbing, circa 1984

THE SCOOP:
After a 10 year hiatus, NARS creator François Nars made a triumphant return to mastermind the makeup at Marc Jacob's Fall 2009 Fashion Show. And what a show it was. Far and away the most colorful show so far this season, the makeup played off the broad shoulders and neon hues in Marc Jacob's 80's nightclub inspired collection with bold, bright makeup that channeled everything 80's, from The Palmer Girls to Girls Just Want Have Fun-era Cyndi Lauper to the cover of Duran Duran's Rio album. It was no easy undertaking: Sixty-five different models walked on the MJ runway (the usual is around 20!), and François Nars created custom looks for each girl, considering each model's individual beauty before creating and edgy look that conjured up the 80's in a modern way. "We are doing quite an eclectic look," he said. The inspiration for diversity came from Nars' book XRAY. "[Marc] wanted to keep that feeling," said Nars, "the variety of looks, the same way we do the campaigns for NARS." Like many of the other shows this week, the underlying message was optimism - using fashion and beauty to have fun despite the economy. And unlike a Marc Jacobs mesh bodysuit, a red NARS lipstick is a whimsy we can actually afford.

GET THE LOOK:
Strong eyes and bold color were a major theme, while skin was contoured and theatrical. Black shadow laid the foundation for creating the dramatic eye, to which the artists added a rainbows of Nars Eye Shadows in cobalt blues, deep greens, bright purples, reds, fuchsias, and glitter. "There is a wide variety of color," said Nars, "it's whatever looks good on the girl." For many of the models, porcelain skin was a key component, allowing the black eyes and bright colors to pop. "You want to play with makeup," says Nars, "makeup is a great accessory - that is the message."

Fashion Week has an Official Coffee - It's McCafe

Anna Wintour enjoys a Starbucks beverageMove over Starbucks, your star is reentering the Earth's atmosphere at a perilously steep angle and your heat shield just got another crack -- McCafe just bought out Fashion Week. That's right, the "official" upper of this year's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will be none other than McDonald's own upscale espresso selection. Three months before McCafe's official North American debut, the fast food empire is trying to get fashion elites and opinion makers hooked on their triple, non-fat, two Splenda, caramel lattes.

Revealed, Kanye West's Hi-Top Louis Vuitton Sneaker

Filed under: Style in the News

Last week, Kanye West's highly anticipated sneaker collection with Louis Vuitton was finally unveiled at the luxury label's menswear presentation in Paris. Not only did front row guests get to see the pearly white low-top shoes that TMZ spotted the rapper donning a while back, but they also caught a first look at the candy-colored hi-tops 'Ye also made for LV.

While the sneakers are admittedly a little too rich for our blood, we imagine lots of luxury consumers and dedicated sneaker heads will be sporting a pair by this summer. Recently, the AP caught up with the man of the hour to discuss his project with LV and as usual, Mr. West doesn't fail to disappoint with the sound bites. Watch and enjoy.
