Amanda Seyfried in Jay Godfrey - I want that!

Mamma Mia actress Amanda Seyfried looked super cute in this emerald green Jay Godfrey frock. This is a great dress for a number of body types because the sweetheart neckline, cinched waist, and slightly flared skirt do an amazing job enhancing the right places and hiding the oh-so-wrong ones. It's just one of those pieces that will leave you shouting, "It's a miracle! I've just lost 5 pounds instantly but gained perfect curves! No wait... it's just my dress. Nevermind!"

Everything is a fashion thing

Filed under: Clothing, Men, Kids and Babies

That is one hot melon baller. From time to time we at Styledash will cover items and topics that seem only tangentially related to fashion -- from a schlumpy anti-fashion celebrity to kitchen supplies, and it might be cause for confusion -- why spend the space on a fashion blog to talk about seemingly non-fashion things?

We understand how this is perplexing because not only is this blog called "Styledash", which implies a commitment to fashion coverage and therefore unsurprising dealings in fashion commentary, but the idea of a "fashion thing" vs. a non-"fashion thing" is peculiar. We're not sure that there's a dichotomy at all, really -- in fact we are pretty certain that every thing, to an extent, is a fashion thing.

What were you thinking, Meryl?

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Red Carpet Trends

Meryl Streep is one of the few people in Hollywood who still refuses to hire a stylist. In this regard, I admire her individualism and confidence. However, choosing to leave the house without getting a second opinion can sometimes lead to fashion disasters.

Case in point: Meryl's confusing Oscar dress/jacket/grass skirt.

To her credit, she wore the outfit with irony (it's Prada and she was nominated for her role in the Devil Wears Prada -- clever, no?). But despite what hipster kids might tell you, dressing ironically isn't the same thing as dressing well.

Certainly, what's good for Helen Mirren isn't necessarily good for Meryl Streep, but I do think that Meryl could take a lesson from Mirren and show off her figure a little more. I'm not saying that she should go the route of cleavage and leg slits, but surely good tailoring would be preferable to an expensive, shapeless satin muumuu.

Meryl has also taken some heat from her odd ball selection of semi-precious stone necklaces. I probably stand alone in this regard, but I kind of like that she ditched the ostentatious bling. For better or for worse, at least she dressed like herself.

MovieStyle: Funny Face

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

If you liked the high-fashion world in The Devil Wears Prada, you should check out Audrey Hepburn's 1957 film, Funny Face. Granted, it's a much tamer vision of the world of fashion than the one we saw with Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, but that's part of this classic film's charm. Funny Face follows the young ingenue Jo Stockton (Hepburn) as she travels to Paris to model high-end fashions for the famous photographer Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire. If you have a soft spot for Gershwin, 1950s Paris, and for vintage Givenchy clothes, Funny Face is the film for you.
