Beauty Ritual - The Pre-Yoga Pedicure

Will a Pre-Yoga Pedi Bring You One Step Closer to Enlightenment? Apparently, It's Not a Stretch. Photo by Getty Images

When Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounge, confessed that she loves looking at her sparkly pedicure while doing downward dogs in yoga, I suddenly felt I had a kindred spirit. A good pedi really affects my practice, and I'm no longer ashamed to admit it.

If you think I sound shallow, hold that thought, and listen to Julia Chan, the manager of Soho Sanctuary in New York City. In true yogic fashion, she's totally accepting of the role nail polish plays in my path to enlightenment.

"Nail polish is a form of self-expression for many women," says Chan. "If painting your toenails before yoga makes you happy, then it's part of your practice."

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - The Nail Polish Pendant

This week's Guest Beauty Blogger, All Lacquered Up, dishes on her newest discovery - nail polish pendants!

I'm always looking for creative uses for my beauty products. I love discovering new ways to utilize my overwhelming beauty arsenal and Total Beauty found a slew of innovative ways to turn beauty closet staples into multitaskers.

Well, have I got a new one for you. Like infomercial legend, Mike Levy and his crazy sweaters, I have found THE discovery for us nail polish fanatics.

The nail polish pendant! How many times have we described a polish as being jewel-like or having a jewel tone? And I know I can't be the only one who has tried to coordinate polish with my favorite gemstones. I mean, haven't you ever wished your favorite shade was jewelry? Wish no more! My genius pal Tracey from Ginger Kitty Designs has found a way to make that dream a reality. That's right, we're talking nail polish AS jewelry.

Guest Beauty Blogger Wednesdays - Frankenpolish and the Art of Layering

This week's Guest Beauty Blogger, All Lacquered Up, dishes on customizing your nail polish.

Ask any beauty junkie and we'll admit, no matter how many shades, fragrances or formulations are thrown our way we are still restless for more. Even if we find that perfect product, after a while we'll wish it was a bit more "something". Deeper in color, smoother in feel, slightly more floral, etc. Let's face, it we're just never satisfied.

Unfortunately, in this economy we just can't afford to buy every new shade that comes on the market. I mean how many times have we plunked down our hard earned money, only to end up disappointed with a shade that's too sheer, too dark or just plain wrong? Our wallets can't take that risk now. Of course if that's happened recently, you're obviously not a regular reader of All Lacquered Up and Total Beauty product reviews.

Now before you go pitching that unwanted purchase, consider customizing it to suit your needs. In the world of lacquer when we can't find the color we want we become kids again, mixing colors like we used to with finger paints. It's all about experimenting, letting your imagination go and relying on our childhood art lessons about the color wheel. Say it with me folks, yellow and blue make green.

Formaldehyde and Nailpolish

You know that pretty nail polish you're dying to paint your toes with this spring? You might want to take a look at the ingredient list -- many polishes contain formaldehyde, a highly debated cosmetic ingredient.

Formaldehyde is a preservative that can be found in a plethora of seemingly-safe items, including the air you breathe. The EPA believes it to be a possible carcinogen, and the use of formaldehyde in cosmetics is regulated in Europe, Canada, and Japan. However, here in the States, the FDA doesn't think it poses enough risk to necessitate regulation in cosmetics (even children's toiletries aren't always formaldehyde free). In nail polish, formaldehyde is used to help harden the nails.

Even if there's no federal regulation in the U.S., you do have a choice in whether you expose yourself to formaldehyde in your nail lacquer. Dr.'s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish, along with a bevy of other beauty brands, are creating formaldehyde-free polishes.

Nailed! Prince Harry in Pink Polish

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

prince harryThe British royal boys, Prince Harry and Prince William, are the source of a lot of tabloid speculation about their wild lives. This time Prince Harry has the gossip tongues wagging after he stepped out sporting a new look -- one hand of lovely painted pink nails.

We're not quite sure if Prince Harry is trying to tell us something -- that he'd like to change his name to Princess Harrieta and try out life as a Royal Drag Queen, perhaps? Or maybe he's making a statement about gender roles and showing the world that he's not afraid to show off his more feminine side.

But, most likely, the sexy Brit was just drunk in da' club, having a little fun with some lady friends. Hmmm, which brings us to wonder what on again, off again (ex) girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, thinks about her guy getting pretty in pink.

HARRY'S PINK TIPS ARE HOT FOR SPRING, AND SO ARE THESE TRENDS...
