With the holidays approaching, we're trying to refrain from spending much money on ourselves. Lucky for us, Intermix, Cusp, Chick Downtown, Shopbop and Active Endeavors are all having excellent sales online this week. Of course, we just had to share the news with Stylelist readers.

Michelle Obama on Jay Leno in J. Crew - Get The Look!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Get the Look

Last night Michele Obama took a break from the Presidential campaign trail and made an appearance on the Jay Leno show. She talked about her husband Barack's ailing grandmother, Toots, and her daughter's lack of awe for his upcoming 30 minute T.V. special. But the big news was her stylishly cheery yellow ensemble.

Joe's Jeans are too cool for fools

The other night we were watching the latest Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. The makeover candidate was being inexplicably bitchy to Tim and Gretta, so we already were disinclined to like her.

We were forced to further downgrade her when, while passing through the jeans section of Neiman Marcus, Gretta pointed out Joe's Jeans and this wench said, "Don't know Joe, don't want to." Clearly she's a fool!

Katie Holmes designing denim?

Filed under: Jeans, Celebrities with Style

Most of us in the world of fashion were slightly taken aback when Katie Holmes started sporting what looked like her husband's jeans, pegged and rolled to the ankle. We were sure it was a fluke, but she kept showing up in them, and before long, we stopped being surprised. Heck, we even stopped making faces about it.

Shopping mall or secret brothel?Fast times at Northbrook Court!

According to the Chicago Tribune, two employees of Neiman Marcus in Northbrook, IL, were fired when a security camera caught them doing the the horizontal mambo on the premises.

You think they slunk away, tails between their legs, hoping they wouldn't be arrested for semi-public indecency? As if!

The Christmas Book by Neiman Marcus - Our favorite bedtime reading

Aviator sunglasses + men = classically cool

Filed under: Accessories, Men, Must Haves

Guys don't really have a myriad of accessories to obsess over. Most don't wear much--if any--jewelry, or carry a bag, or put things in their hair, or have much use for scarves. It's all the more reason that a man's choice of sunglasses carries a lot of weight.

The never-fail option is classic aviators, which were first developed by Ray-Ban way back in 1937. According to Wikipedia, aviators are defined by their "dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eye socket, and metal frames with wire temples which hook behind the ears."

Of course, most of us simply know them when we see them. Here are some of our favorite, modern takes on the eternally cool aviator sunglasses.

Tip of the day: Neiman Marcus' magnificent seven

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Though we love to scout the runways for trends on our own, we were totally inspired by Neiman Marcus' "Fall's Magnificent Seven" ad campaigns that have been flooding our inbox all week.

Why aren't you wearing this? Juicy Couture Slouchy Newsboy Beret

Filed under: Accessories, Hair Care, Must Haves

Most of the time, we don't really want anything we're wearing to be described as slouchy. We did the slouch sock phase, and we're happy to be well past it, and sure, there are slouchy sweaters, but in all honesty, we prefer something with a little more fit.

Crazy cravings: wooden platform sandals

Ah, summer time. Cookouts. Weekend afternoon parties. Long, warm evenings in friends' backyards. It's the season for sundresses, bare legs and pretty pedicures.

This adds up to a deep need for new sandals.

A sensible woman would get something neutral and comfortable, a pair you can wear anywhere, with anything.

Yeah. Well, good for them.

We want these crazy 4" 4.25" high, green, wooden wedge heels with a hole in the middle of them. They look moderately uncomfortable and totally hard to walk in. L-o-v-e at first sight.

They live at Target, and will come home with us for $19.99. At least we won't need to use rent money to pay for them, unlike the $700 peach suede Prada sandals smirking at us over at Neiman Marcus.

Why aren't you wearing this? Smoky Quartz Ring

Oh, how we love a fabulous cocktail ring. It's such an easy way to add instant glamor to an outfit, and it just begs for you to make dramatic gestures with your hands while talking. And, while you can always get a fake ring, it's always nice to have something real tucked away in your jewelry box, too.

Nordstrom on Facebook, MySpace

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

In an attempt to grab a bigger piece of the younger trendier market, it looks like Nordstrom has decided to finally take part in the whole social networking thing. Over the last couple of weeks, Nordstrom has been quietly launching its first ventures into the worlds of Facebook and Myspace.

Surprised? It's for their BP section, so it's probably a better idea than it sounds like at first. Their Myspace page is literally covered up in images of Pete Wentz and his hoodies -- just to give you an idea of what they're going for.

Dress of the Day: Young, Fabulous and Broke Striped Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

young fabulous broke striped sweater dress
This dress isn't for the faint of heart, nor for the thick of waist. Young Fabulous and Broke takes just about the most feared design elements known to dresses and puts them into the Striped Shirt Dress.

As if wide, horizontal stripes weren't enough, the stripes are ever so eye-catching in a deep brick color and high contrast cream. With viscose and Lurex, the material will show every - ahem - curve on your body. The sleeves are bracelet length, which make them easier to wear for work, but the shortened sleeves will make short arms looks shorter. But hey. if you've got it, flaunt it, whatever it is.

Available from Neiman Marcus on sale for $140.

Luxury shoppers might start crowding our H&Ms and Targets

shopping
If you only wear the affordable GO! collections at Target and love shopping at H&M, watch out. It might get a little more crowded this year.

That's because "luxury" shoppers aren't shopping as much at their usual high-end stores.

According to BusinessWeek, stores like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus saw tiny Holiday increases in sales, if not a drop, this past season, and are expecting a major slowdown. Retail expert Patricia Pao says, "Everyone's shopping for the bare necessities, and people have stopped treating themselves."

Punk rock sophistication with the Psycho Bunny tie

Filed under: Stores We Love, Accessories, Men

Psycho Bunny Tie from Neiman MarcusIf you work in a casual office environment and want to stand out, instead of trying to out-do your colleagues with clever graphic tees, you might trying dressing up a little.

In fact, you may even want to try wearing a tie every once in awhile.

For that, I suggest these Psycho Bunny ties from Neiman Marcus. While they're probably not suitable for the young lawyer on partner track, these would be perfect for an office where you can untuck your shirt, roll up your sleeves, and show up in jeans and your favorite pair of Converse All-Stars.

But be careful -- if you go too dressy, the ties will only look weird. Nobody wants to be the office loser, who sucks up and takes his job way too seriously.
