Filed under: Style in the News

Those who have a ton of discreationary dollars to blow on expensive duds this month, listen up:

Alexander McQueen, the British designer who presents his lush collections in Paris every year, will be showing a runway presentation over at net-a-porter.com that secretly took place in Milan earlier this year.

In addition to the McQueen viral video that will be streaming on the e-commerce site starting today, the designer will begin selling eight looks straight off the runway in the video exclusively to Net-a-Porter.

The mini collection will include "a fitted skirt suit with pagoda structured shoulders, a tailored crepe all-in-one and a selection of body-conscious day and evening dresses."

Must have leggings for Fall '07

Leg Up: Guide to Leggings
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That's my motto when it comes to leggings. Leggings made an uninvited comeback a few years ago. I shuddered at the thought of putting them on my body. The last time I wore leggings with a straight face was in the 3rd grade, and I hadn't planned on wearing them again. Now that leggings are kind of hard to ignore -- I have decided to embrace them.

Leggings are the perfect transition piece to go from summer to fall and will carry your wardrobe throughout the cold winter months. Since they are nice and popular, it's okay to toss out your $5 leggings from Target to go for something a bit more chic. Expand your leggings wardrobe by going with different colors like navy, cream, plum, and gray. If you are really feeling wild go with a cutesy patterned pair from Primp or take a walk on the wild side with a tiger striped pair from Norma Kamali.

To avoid looking like you just stepped away from a Las Vegas slot machine make sure you wear a tunic or a mini dress with your leggings (no short tops please). Add a jacket and a tall pair of boots with your leggings ensemble to pull it all together.

Meet the next "it" shoes

A prediction has been made, these shoes will be the shoes on every celebrity foot come the fall (November to be exact). C'mon can't you see those pint size Olsen's teetering down the street of New York with a cigarette in one hand and a coffee in the other? I can.

Christian Louboutin's Emily shoe boots are a lovely pale shade of gray patent leather, that looked as if they were dipped in a luscious inky black pool of fabulousness. The boots have faux buttons (because who has time to button shoes) with zippers on the side. And in standard Louboutin fashion, they are sky high and have the signature red sole.

These shoes are embracing the true back-to-school look that will be ruling the fashion world this coming fall. Think argyle, college tees, prep school jackets, rugby stripes, awkward glasses, and, of course, plaid. These Christian Louboutin shoes are available for pre-order on Net-a-Porter.com and will set you back $925. The shoes will be delivered sometime between November 2007 and January 2008. Can you wait? I can't.

Shop the Net-a-porter mid-season sale

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing, Dresses

True fashionistas know that Net-a-porter is truly the Châteauneuf-du-Pape of online retail. And much like the coveted Rhone red, Net-a-porter goods are way out of my price range. On sale? Eh, they're still out of my price range.

For those of you out there who have more lucrative careers than I, you should know that you can score some serious springtime duds for a fraction of the original retail price. This zesty Tristana hand-printed sundress from Leaves of Grass has been reduced from $390 to $312. The floral silk sundress has a tiered skirt, an embroidered insert at neck, a self-tie sash and an elasticated waist.

All of these elements sound complicated, but if you read between the lines, you'll see that this dress is actually tagged "you're stuck at a hot outdoor wedding and you can't believe that the stupid bride didn't spring for the air conditioned tent!" The ideal solution to this situation? Well, it's going to cost you $312.

Tibi's floral bubble skirt

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing, Dresses

Given the response to Givenchy Barbie's outfit, I understand that there is some disagreement out there over the bubble skirt look. So I'll be interested to hear what the consensus is on Tibi's Voile Bubble hem skirt, which is available at Net-a-Porter.com. I'll be honest, I love the bubble skirt. The fullness feels retro, while the bubble shape adds a much more modern flair. When balanced with a fitted top and a pair of smart-looking shoes (as shown by this emaciated mannequin), I think this skirt is truly adorable. With a black and white graphic floral design, it's flirtatious, it's fun, and given the normal price-point of items at Net-a-Porter (well over the 1K mark), it seems like a steal.

Baby, it's cold inside!

It's August. The thermometer outside my window reads a miserable 98 degrees, but the thermostat in my office -- controlled by a group of men suffering from hot flashes -- reads a frigid 60 degrees.

So long as the temperature inside is set to overcompensate for the temperature outside, I have to dress appropriately. That's probably why this Catherine Maladrino pom-pom scarf looks so appealing to me right now. Knitted from the softest of the soft baby alpaca yarn, this pointellette wrap is wide enough to wrap around my bare shoulders, but warm enough to wear when the weather outside turns legitimately cold. Price: $195.
