Old Navy Plus Size Review

Old Navy Plus Size Review

It's nice to know that a few trendy stores have started offering options for those above a size 12 -- who, according to most statistics, are actually more common than those who inhabit sizes 2-10. I'm on a crusade to figure out how things actually fit based on how they're advertised online, and because this plus size line is only available via Old Navy's website, I thought I'd do my best to sort through their collection.

    Old Navy

    Wool-Blend Trench Coat $92.00
As I mentioned in my last entry about puffer jackets, when you can't see a coat buttoned, zipped or belted, it's probably because there's something to hide. This coat's fatal flaw -- as acknowledged by the placement of the model's hand (not to mention her cinching grip!) -- is that it has no waist. Buttoned up, it will probably look like a big rectangle, as will you.

    Old Navy

    Floral Satin Dress $42.50
The cut of this floral dress is great! My one complaint is that it just doesn't feel right to wear a bright floral in the dead of winter. But hey, invest for summer (or better yet, wait until it goes on sale -- then invest!).

    Old Navy

    Embellished Faux-Gem Dress $49.50
This one's more favorable for the season, especially the holidays with its sequined empire waistband.

    Old Navy

    Notch-Front Dress $39.50
Not a fan of this blocky notch-front dress. Though it appears to have contouring in the right places (front seams, slight cinch at the empire), I have a bad feeling about that no man's land around the tummy area like there might be puckering around those seams as you move about, and as the extra fabric gathers under your boobs it's going to get wrinkly and look bad. Also, the notch collar looks kind of sloppy -- trust me on this, I've been doing it for years.

    Old Navy

    Crinkle-Chiffon Keyhole Dress $39.50
This drop waist dress is just horrible. It cuts you in your widest place and falls straight from the hip making you look even wider. Absolutely not a good cut for the plus sized!

    Old Navy

    Ruffle-Neck Cardigan $34.50
Love this pencil skirt, but the big floral satin top won't do much to make you look more svelt (if anything, it'll do just the opposite), and the cut of the cardigan is way too rounded, emphasizing the overall roundness of your top half. If you have a larger bust and broad sloping shoulders, you want a combination of tops that add some structure to your top half, not more soft lines.

    Old Navy

    Pleated Satin Top $29.50
If you need more evidence about how these types of tops really aren't flattering, look at these alternative views.

    Old Navy

    Cashmere Scoop-Neck Sweater $79.50
    Classic Rise Herringbone Trousers $36.50
The pants here are great, who doesn't need a staple pair of brown flat front, wide leg trouser pants? But the top, again, is too round. You'd do much better with a v-neck for a more svelte silhouette, and the extra fabric around the tummy isn't doing anything for you. Always look for fabric that adds structure and shape to your top half.

Dress of the day - Old Navy Belted Cowl Neck Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

We believe that a cowl neck instantly makes everything more sophisticated. Case in point? This simple dress by Old Navy: It's a jersey shift with a grosgrain ribbon belt - nothing special, really - but the cowl neck gives it instant lady-like appeal. A perfect fall layering piece.

Why aren't you wearing this? Color-Block Croc-Print Flats

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

Two trends that we can expect to continue through the fall season are color-blocking and animal prints. And, as you are probably well-aware, purple is the color this autumn, although there's something even more popular -- saving money in this uncertain economy.

Why aren't you wearing this? Quilted Faux-Leather Satchel

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Must Haves

How many handbags do you have? And, out of those, how many do you use on a regular basis? We'll admit, we sometimes get in a rut, switching just between black and brown, but we think that a bold, bright color is just as easy to carry.

A bag like this red Quilted Faux-Leather Satchel, $34.50 on sale for $19.50 at Old Navy can add a much needed punch of color to a boring outfit, or act as a complement to an already bold ensemble.

Old Navy Tall and Petite - StyleList review

Old Navy recently gave us $30 to pick out something from their Tall and Petite options and try it on for size -- so to speak. We asked our resident Jolly Green Giant, Kristen Seymour, to give it a whirl. Here's what she came back with.

Those of us on the tall side (or petite) know that it's not always just the length of clothing that's an issue -- when you're taller, you might have the all around bone structure to match. I know I do -- I have broad shoulders, which is an issue with many shirts, jackets, and dresses.

Old Navy knows this, and created their Petite and Tall clothing with this in mind. Petites, for women 5'4" and under, have narrowed shoulders, higher arm openings, shorter sleeves and length, narrowed hips and waist, and a shorter inseam. Talls, for women 5'10" and over, offer an extra half inch in the shoulders (yahoo!), longer sleeves and body, a lower waist, and longer inseam.

Sweater vests for men - are you feelin' it?

Filed under: Clothing, Vintage and Retro, Men

With cooler weather coming just around the corner, we've noticed that all of the conditions are right for a sweaterific fall and winter for men's fashion. Cardigans, turtlenecks, and yes, even the nerdiest of all -- sweater vests -- seem to be turning up in all sorts of fall collections. While the sweater vest is an easy way to add some colorful layers to your wardrobe, we kinda have to wonder if men are really going to embrace the sweater vest this season -- or if that's just wishful thinking.

From what we've gathered, this year's sweater vest look is all about the pattern -- and the nerdier the better. Forget solids or pinstripes, its all about checks, argyles, or a bold houndstooth. Basically, anything reminiscent of an ugly retro sweater that your parents dressed you in as a toddler. We like the depth that a SV can bring to an outfit, but we don't expect to see many on the street. What do you think? Is the sweater vest going to be a hot item this fall?

Dress of the day - Old Navy crossover color block dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Steals and Deals, Daily Obsession, Must Haves

Ease into fall in style with this great dress from Old Navy - the crossover neckline and 3/4 sleeves are just perfect for September weather and the above the knee length will let you show off your summer skin while you still can. We love the pairing of sky blue with the grey and black detailing at the waist and hemline - but there's also a cute black and purple version if you're not into the blue. At this price, you might as well buy both!

Why aren't you wearing this? Lightweight Gauze Scarf

It's only August, and already we're seeing Hollywood's hottest stay just a little hotter with lightweight scarves, so now is the perfect time to pick up one of your own. However, unless you are exempt from budgetary concerns (and lucky you, if that's the case), we don't see this as an accessory you should splurge on. In most parts of the country, it'll only be useful for a short time -- by the time you really need a scarf, you need a warm one, right?

Why aren't you wearing this? Women's Grosgrain Ribbon Belt

Belts can do so much more than just hold up a saggy pair of pants. The right belt can finish an outfit. It can create a waistline. And, it can make a boring outfit trendy, classic, or, in the case of this belt, preppy.

Why aren't you wearing this? Patent Ballet Flat

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Daily Obsession, Must Haves

A bright ballet flat is the perfect shoe to take you from day to night, office to ladies' night, because it's so easy to pair with a variety of looks. It will look chic with a pair of tailored slacks for work and it'll give a pop of color to a pair of dark jeans. It'll also look fab with a cute little dress, and it gives you an excuse to add some bright, chunky jewelry to your ensemble.

Why aren't you wearing this? Gumball Necklace

You know, we have nothing against ridiculously expensive accessories. We love fabulous, flashy jewelry, and we think spending a paycheck on it is just a tribute to the fashions gods ... in theory. However, in practice, we're huge fans of inexpensive, fun pieces of jewelry that give a pop of color and whimsy to even the plainest of white tees.

That's why, at $12.50, this Old Navy Short Gumball Necklace is such a cool piece. We like it in red (picture it against a navy and white striped top for a trip to the Cape), but it comes in a variety of colors as well as a longer length.
