Paul Smith Talks Trash!

"It" Brit designer, Paul Smith, has come up with a novel way to encourage Londoners not to litter as part of the Design Museum's Super Contemporary Exhibition at Covent Garden Piazza in London.

The just unveiled five-foot rabbit rubbish bin is best described as a "throw your trash into the bunny basket" carnival-like game (though it's not rigged). No one stands next to the receptacle yelling "step right up!" and, thank God, there isn't anyone guessing your weight! But it does light up whenever garbage is deposited. Score!

You don't win a cheap stuffed animal if you make the shot (and you better make the shot!). Three dunks in a row doesn't equal the huge, top-shelf prize. And, no, you won't have a goldfish in a Ziploc to take home. But you will be doing the right -- and apparently, now stylish -- thing!

Sadly, at the moment, it's just part of an art exhibit, but we could totally see one in front of Topshop! and really hope next time we hop the pond the sidewalks are rabbit ridden.

Fans send designer Paul Smith Rabbits

Filed under: Style in the News

When we were in elementary school, we frequently mailed impassioned and masterfully misspelled letters to pen pals across the world. In return, we received equally bad letters and little gifts native to our adorable pen pal's country.

Paul Smith comes ashore

Filed under: Stores We Love, Celebrities with Style

Fans of the quirky British designer Paul Smith will be happy to hear that he just opened his flagship American store in New York this week. At 142 Greene Street in Soho, the shop will feature all of Paul Smith's various collections, including his three women's lines, several men's lines, accessories, housewares, perfume and some furniture. According to reports, the new store will also exhibit fine art, including a piece by British artist Richard Woods. Not to spoil the surprise, Smith was tight-lipped about the details of the new space, suggesting instead that people should come by and check it out. Smith will be opening two more boutiques in Paris and Moscow next month.

The skinny tie trend

Leggings, skinny jeans and tunics and even asymmetrical haircuts have all returned from the graveyard of my youth known as the 1980s and now it looks like the skinny tie is offically back too. Ties have been narrowing for the past few years but this year they seem to have hit a new slimness. At first the skinny tie was mainly popular with retro-loving hipsters but the trend seems to be gaining solidity with designers such as Paul Smith and even Hermes embracing the trend. The skinny tie was also mentioned as a trend to adopt in a recent article in Forbes which means that that the skinny tie is now safe for the business world once again.

Why the lady is a vamp

If you've seen the photographs of Scarlett Johansson from the Venice film festival, you probably noticed the old Hollywood way she carried herself on the red carpet. There was the long-flowing dresses, the smooth, gentle curls, and of course, there was that siren red lipstick. And while the rest of her peer group is tarting it up in dresses that look more like shirts and shoes that appear to have been swiped off the feet of a corner girl on Hollywood Boulevard, Scarlett's look demands that we take her seriously, as a woman and as an actress.

Bravo, ScaJo!

And the designers are already taking notice of this forties revival. This season, Paul Smith, Marni and Brooks Brothers all have pieces that hearken back to the Hepburn days (Audrey and Katharine).
