Bravo's "The Fashion Show" Unveils Contestants

Filed under: Style in the News

Bravo has started to introduce the contestants for its "Project Runway" replacement, "The Fashion Show." Season one of the stitch-and-bitch fest, which one Bravo insider described it as "like Project, but with real designers" (meow!), begins May 7.

Let's take a look at the talent, shall we?

This teaser video introduces each contestant in just a few seconds. Watch with me, and let me know what you think.

Vote for the next (not) Project Runway on Bravo - The Fashion Show

Filed under: Style in the News

As you may know, the popular Project Runway TV show does not exist at Bravo any longer. Will any of the winners really emerge as the next "great American fashion designer?" Um, no. It's true. But Bravo is filling the void with a new program called The Fashion Show. And potential fans are invited to vote between two designers for the last spot.

The Rachel Zoe Project: "I die."

Filed under: Style in the News

Psssst. We've been keeping a very dirty little secret: we're totally obsessed with The Rachel Zoe Project. No, really we've got a problem. To date, we've seen every episode of the power stylists show and have watched the subsequent re-runs on Bravo ad nauseam. Rachel's super-cheesy catch phrase "to die", Taylor's two seasons old black nail polish, and Brad's incessant whining all makes us kind of swoon every Tuesday night.

And tonight, we expect another round of warm feelings to takeover our body at about 9pm EST when a new episode airs.

Apparently, the crew is still at New York Fashion Week so maybe this is the episode we'll get to see Rachel getting locked out of the Marc Jacobs/ Meanwhile, enjoy this clip of Zoe trying on some of her new vintage dresses. And people, they're "die."

Vogue and IMG make model TV

Filed under: Style in the News

And now model-oriented reality television programming just got a little more serious.

Today, Wall Street Journal reports Vogue magazine and IMG are teaming up to launch a web-based reality series about the world of fashion and of course, modeling. Called Model.Live, the series will follow Madeline Kragh, Cato Van Ee, and Austria Alcantara, three up-and-coming IMG babes poised to skyrocket towards the front of their class.

The series cost a whopping $3 million to make or approximately $31,000 minute. It debuts on Vogue.TV August 19th and will consist of twelve eight minute episodes. So yeah, Tyra's America's Next Top Model and Bravo's Make Me A Supermodel have some major competition this fall. In this preview, watch as the girls prep for their promo photo shoot.

Kitson drops the (formerly) popular Lauren Conrad

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

King/Queen of Schadenfreude Perez Hilton is gleefully proclaiming the death of the clothing line "created" by Hills "star" Lauren Conrad. Kitson dropped her from their L.A. boutiques because of "lackluster sales." Ouch.

Like seemingly everyone else, we found the stuff she "designs" to be overpriced given their lack of originality, but not that bad. If anything, they were an almost perfect thermometer of vapid popularity. Are maxi-dresses still popular? Yes, LC has one in the latest "collection" which means they will be around for another 15 minutes.

Sure, it's a blow to get dropped by trend-maker Kitson, but like a weed, we're sure LC will pop up somewhere else. In the meantime, mid-western sweet sixteens with fat allowances and a "reality" show addiction can still get their drapey jersey dress fix online.

Britain's Missing Top Model explores the question of beauty and disability

Filed under: Style in the News

A new BBC show is ready to challenge the fashion world's notions about marketable beauty. Britain's Missing Top Model, like American's Next Top Model and the ilk, brings together several beauties and puts them through a series of competitions where they have to use real life modeling "skills." The winner is awarded with an exclusive photo spread in Marie Claire, and presumably lasting fame and fortune.

The twist? These models all have some form of disability.

Gah. As much as we hate Heather Mills and would rather stick pins in our eyes than give her credit, perhaps all of her gawking around on Dancing With The Stars did some good.

Who ever said second place didn't count?

As we mentioned earlier, 21-year-old Holly Kiser won the first season of Make Me A Supermodel, which included a contract with New York Models and $100,000 check.

But it seems as though she wasn't the only contestant who walked away with more than just a couple of hours of embarrassing moments on national television.

Rachel Zoe coming to a TV near you

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

rachel zoeJust when we all thought it was time for her to say goodbye to the spotlight, Rachel Zoe is now getting her own reality television show. The raisin-faced fashionista's show is due to arrive on a TV near you as early as June.

Rachel Zoe has confirmed that she will be shooting a one-hour reality television program for the network Bravo. According to Zoe, the show isn't going to about exposing her clients lives -- unless of course they want to. I personally don't think anyone is going to care about her latest bunch of A-listers, since all of the crazy good ones (Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan) ditched her a long time ago. Zoe's current A-list roster includes Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Garner, and Liv Tyler. Can we yawn, "Boring?"

The show still does not have an official title but will shoot in New York for two months. The show sounds like a train wreck in the making so you know we will be tuning in.

Reality TV version of Ugly Betty in the works

Filed under: Style in the News

You've almost undoubtedly seen an episode or two of Ugly Betty -- the show that follows a stereotypically unattractive girl through the exploits at a high-profile fashion magazine. It's funny, right?

But what if it were true?

Hoping to cash in on the show's success, VH1 is rumored to be developing a reality TV version of the show, called "America the Ugly," that will follow real-life "ugly" women who work in the fashion industry. Becky Southwick, the infamous booker on The Agency, known for biting comments like "You've got fatter. And yes, I've just said the F-word,'' is set to host the program, and provide her usual commentary.

While mean-spirited reality TV personalities like Southwick, or Simon Cal, can be funny, it seems like this is crossing the line. Models on The Agency and contestants on American Idol have asked to be judged, and want desperately to work in industries based almost entirely on your appearance. But will people really want to watch Southwick pick on random employees at fashion houses and style magazines who don't meet her standards?
