London Fashion Week: Farhi casts her vote on the runway

In the wake of what many are calling a snooze of a NY fashion week, it seems that many designers have seized upon London Fashion Week as an opportunity to branch out, try something outrageous, or even try to drum up support for their favorite candidate. Though London seems like an unlikely place to appeal to American voters, that didn't stop Nicole Farhi from replacing the traditional brooch with a "Obama '08" campaign pin.

While the French designer is not a registered voter in the US, she's managed to work her way into what has to be the most intensely fashion-oriented campaign in decades. It seems like a candidate's fashion choices have become an important dimension for many sartorially-inclined voters. Obama is good-looking, McCain wears expensive shoes, Biden is a snazzy dresser, Palin is bringing back the sexy librarian look -- that stuff's important, right?

We're pretty sure that we've never seen this level of wearable propaganda in either depth or breadth. Whether its shoes, boxer briefs, thongs, glasses or hairstyles there seems to be a way to express your partisan ideology with it.

Tip of the day: Don't be so transparent

Filed under: Style in the News, Style Tip of the Day

It is often difficult for people to find anything that you can bring into your own life when it comes to haute couture except for the entertainment factor. That's what we're here for – to pull the haute trends from the runway and deliver them to you in wearable form.

Dita von Teese keeps her clothes on

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Burlesque performer Dita von Teese is the darling of just about everything these days -- the art world, the music world, pale girls around the world. Dita can now add the fashion industry to her list of people who love her. This week, Dita starred in Jean-Paul Gaultier's Spring/Summer 2007 Couture show in Paris.

At least from the photographs, I think she makes a pretty great model. I mean, sure the other girls are pros, but I totally love the "Yes, I'm having fun!" glint in her eye, which was truthfully a welcome change from the dull, empty expressions of the other girls. (Empty or hungry, who can say?)

But good work on that one, Dita! See -- we even like you when you keep your clothes on!

City of Angels

Filed under: Runway Trends, Stores We Love, Style in the News, Swimwear and Lingerie

Victoria's Secret just announced that its annual televised "Angels" fashion show will have a new location this year. Instead of taking place in New York, the angels runway show will be held at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.

For those of us who aren't well connected or are perhaps too sheepish to admit that we're actually interested in seeing beautiful women tromp around in underpants in person (yawn!), the multi-million dollar fashion show will also air on CBS. The network estimates that the show will have 10 million droolers, er, I mean viewers.
