Chanel and LVHM Scale Back, Succumb to the Recession

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

Woman carrying a chanel shopping bagFor a few months, it looked like the luxury brands would somehow escape the economic fallout plaguing the lower classes. Chanel was pumping out its usual flow of outrageously-priced items like the $18K fly fishing rod, and LVMH was busy buying a yacht building company like everything was just peachy keen. Now, after months of worldwide financial hiccups convulsions, it looks like even the seemingly immune are having to eat some humble pie.

Paris Hilton wants to help Sarah Palin find her inner skank

If anyone can help Sarah Palin turn a wonky eye twitch and a thin resume into fame and fortune, it's Paris Hilton.

Experimental hairstyles: The sidewalk cut

There are a lot of people who don't really think there's anything magical about what a hairdresser does. It takes a long time, it's expensive, and -- above all else -- it tends to lead to horribly forced conversations. There is a way to get your hair cut for free, though. This dude in San Francisco did it, and all it took was a piece of yarn, a pair of scissor, and a sign that says "help cut my hair, take two snips." It's hard to imagine the conversation being too dull.

Letting a myriad of unwashed strangers get close to your head with a sharp pair of scissors doesn't sound like a good idea to us, but since someone else is doing it, we think it's an awesome social experiment. Not only that, but it doesn't look all that different from any other emo cut that a Russian school kid might get expelled for. The two snip per person technique is obviously not for everyone, but we bet the results are always interesting.

Russian Fashion Week

Filed under: Style in the News

We love international fashion weeks. There's nothing better than seeing crazy, amazing clothes from relatively unknown designers, models walking down runways in cities we've never been to, and checking out the outfits on famous people we've never heard of. Work from houses outside the typical big names in fashion is always interesting. This week, I present to you, Fresh Art, showing at Russian Fashion Week.

CUT-IT-OUT Jersey Collection by Yelena Konovalova

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

I'm really intrigued by the bold, graphic prints of CUT-IT-OUT, a collection of jersey clothing and accessories created by Russian-born designer Yelena Konovalova. Yelena grew up studying art in St. Petersburg before moving to New York to immerse herself in the world of fashion design, first as a student at Parsons and later as Design Director for Catherine Malandrino.

The women's long sleeve Man Woman Man shirt is my favorite piece from the new collection, which features innovative cotton jersey clothing for both men and women. These are not your average t-shirts. Yelena created these single color designs through a process of cutting and folding paper ... although these pieces are probably much more intricate and interesting than those paper snowflakes you made in elementary school. The current lighthearted collection of limited edition pieces was inspired by Russian folk art and pagan fairytales. These would be the perfect comfy yet stylish clothes to spend your weekend daydreaming away in.

Prices range from $30-$120. Available at CUT-IT-OUT.net and Smashing Darling.

Aftershave: smells good, tastes bad

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Fragrance

Russian men like to drink vodka -- or at least I thought they did.

British researchers revealed that nearly half of Russia's deaths among working age men are due to dangerous drinking habits. But it's not vodka they're indulging in -- it's aftershave. Oddly enough, these drinking-related deaths aren't due to toxic chemicals, but are, in fact, due to the extremely high alcohol content (97%).

The study found that men who drank heavily or who drank this non-beverage alcohol, were six times more likely to die than similar men who did not drink at all or did so in moderation. And for those drinking non-beverage alcohol -- not vodka -- the risk was even higher -- 9 times higher to be specific.

My guess is that this trend won't catch on in stateside anytime soon. I can't imagine Eau du Derek Jeter takes very good.

Christian Dior opens in Red Square

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Stores We Love

I'm sure that twenty years ago, no one could have ever imagined that a Christian Dior flagship store would open in Red Square. But sometimes history can surprise you.

Last Thursday, Sharon Stone was on hand to cut the ribbon to officially open the Dior store, wielding a pair of scissors that once belonged to the famous French designer. The Dior store is a 3,650 square foot boutique inside of the GUM department store in Red Square. According to Dior President Sydney Toledano, the Russian luxury market is booming. When it comes to diamond jewelry, furs and high-end handbags, the Russia and Eastern European buyers are already on par with their counterparts in Western European countries. As such, Dior has designated the region as one of the key growth areas over the next few years.

The store itself sounds quite spectacular. Based on the design of the three-level Dior store on Avenue Montaigne in Paris, shoppers get to enjoy an atmosphere of French luxury sprinkled with the impressive views of historic Red Square.
