Saks and Neiman Marcus Announce Layoffs

Filed under: Style in the News

saks fifth avenueYou know things are bad when the rich stop shopping at the rate they use to.

Last Thursday, Saks Inc. announced it would be letting go 1,100 in-store and corporate support jobs, or 9 percent of its work force. But wait, the luxury department store also has plans to scale back on some of the commitments it had made to those employees who it will maintain, namely eliminating merit-based wage increases and suspending matching contributions to employee 401(k) plans for at least a year.

Chanel's new high-concept makeup counters

Filed under: Cosmetics, Fragrance, Daily Obsession

Chanel is revamping its makeup and fragrance counter at Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship New York store.

The new, 850 square-foot space--bigger than most New York apartments--will offer fragrance experts to introduce customers to Chanel's 43 perfume concentrates, eight makeup artist stations, and a digital history book about the French fashion house.

Our favorite feature is Chanel's Miroir Lumiere light-box mirror, tucked away inside the "VIP consultation room." The mirror mimics sunlight at different times of day and in different seasons.

After all, if a shade of lipstick works whether it's summer or winter, morning or night, we might be able to justify its $36 price tag.

Gwyneth Paltrow might have wowed us all during her Iron Man promos by wearing teeny, tiny dresses and giant heels, but the fashion-forward blond is getting ready to promote something else, this time wearing a t-shirt.

Michelle Obama's style secret: Maria Pinto

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

We're enjoying all of the Wall Street Journal coverage about Michelle Obama and her sartorial choices. Last week it was about what she wore on The View. With Green House, Saks must think eco is chic

Filed under: Handbags, Stores We Love, Accessories, Men, Hair Care, Cosmetics, Skin Care, Style for a Cause

saks fifth avenue green houseIt must be official. Though I hadn't yet formed an opinion either way. a lot of people were saying that "eco" in fashion and style was a passing fancy. Like shoulder pads, leggings, and eelskin, eco is just another trend that would be hot for a while, but eventually die out.

Oh wait, leggings came back in a big way, and apparently, Saks is putting their money on eco. They now have a (sort of) permanent section on their online store called Green House, "the home of eco smart style." Structured just like the rest of the site, there are sections for women's apparel, accessories, beauty, and men. I'm guessing with this entire section dedicated to eco brands like Beau Soleil, Loomstate, and Organic, Saks thinks eco is worth it. Of course, we'll wait and see if they put a permanent link to it, instead of from a promo section on their front page.

Viva La Cure at Saks Fifth Avenue

Filed under: Style in the News, Style for a Cause

viva la cure shirt saks.comFor those of you who have been living under a rock this month, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each year Saks Fifth Avenue has their Viva la Cure campaign, which includes a designer t-shirt.

Juicy Couture designs this year's limited edition Key to The Cure shirt and 100% of the proceeds go to the Women's Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Last week, the Rockefeller Center ice skating arena went pink (literally) for the 2007 Viva la Cure campaign launch party. Steve Sadove, CEO and chairman of Saks, and Brooke Shields hosted the event, which brought together campaign supporters, who enjoyed cocktails and good times.

Some of the celebrities who attended included Kristin Davis, fashion designer Nanette Lepore, Amanda Peet, and Gossip Girl star Blake Lively.

In the campaign's eighth year, Saks Fifth Avenue has already raised more than $20 million.

The limited edition t-shirt is available at Saks.com for $35.

Saks Fifth Avenue's shoe-a-palooza

Filed under: Stores We Love, Accessories, Shoes

Today Saks Fifth Avenue has unveiled it's largest shoe department in New York City. What makes it the largest shoe department ever? Could it be the 10,000 pairs of shoes or that fact that the department warrants its own zip code (10022)? Yep, its that serious. A sea of stilettos, boots, sandals, mules, high heels, kitten heels, and more.

Actress Debra Messing and celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch were there today to cut the purple ribbon. Bloch stated that "You couldn't have kept us away. When they asked me to come I thought Saks...ahhh ...Debra ...ahhh ...shoes ...ahhh...this could be trouble." I would be in trouble too if I were surrounded by a pair of $1700 gold Christian Louboutin heels (which Bloch couldn't resist so he tried them on himself).

Messing's mind was clearly blown, "This is mind-blowing, awe-inspiring, titillating; it makes me feel like I want to dance throughout the entire room. It's also sort of frustrating because with 10,000 styles it's too much and you just can't have it all." Her first purchase was a pair of Louboutin peep-toe pumps for $950.

Just hearing about their excitement (reported from Fashion Week Daily) has me green with envy. Talk about a kid in the candy store. I get all giddy inside DSW and that is like the bruised fruit warehouse compared to a gigantic Saks. If you find yourself in New York's Cities Saks, trek on up the 8th floor and buy me a pair of Louboutins. Or just tell me how much fun you had drooling over 10,000 pairs of shoes.

Saks Fifth Avenue's new look

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

In January, Saks Fifth Avenue will reveal a new corporate logo. The decision to update the logo was part of the company's overall plans for revitalization. According to Steve Sadove, CEO of Saks, "The updated logo gives us a modern look that is sure to resonate with our customers and contribute to the resurgence of Saks Fifth Avenue." While the details of the new design are closely guarded, Saks' senior vice president, Terron Shaefer was willing to drop a few clues about what we can expect. "Graphic, bold, and sophisticated, the new branding initiative is not only a redesigned logo but a new visual language. Similar to the Burberry nova check and the Louis Vuitton LV, it will become an enduring icon, synonymous with Saks Fifth Avenue style."

A new visual language, eh? You mean like Esperanto?

Saks expands catalog with Mercedes

Filed under: Style in the News

There are some of us in this world who have to be stylish in every aspect of our lives. And then there are those of us who think that Saks Fifth Avenue, which is including a "signature edition" Mercedes Benz CL600 in its upcoming holiday catalog, is absolutely crazy.

Fashion Week Daily reports that Saks will have the Mercedes flagship -- designed exclusively for Saks -- for sale come Christmas.

Keeping to the Saks tradition, Mercedes got high-end with its color-naming scheme for this car -- a "Mystic White" exterior, "Porcelain nappa leather", and a "Piano lacquer black" wood-grain interior.

Just in case you're aiming to complete your stylish repertoire with such an item, get ready to spend big -- last year's version sold for around $145,000. Pricing hasn't been announced for this year ... but in my mind, there's little doubt Saks will sock it to us.
