SF Neighborhood Rejects American Apparel Permit, Loves the Clothes

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

American Apparel storefront in Key West, FloridaIn a nearly incomprehensible story that could only happen in Inner Mission San Francisco, Williamsburg, or Portland -- a group of progressive, socially-conscious hipsters with a penchant for v-neck t-shirts in San Francisco have successfully defeated plans to open a progressive, socially-conscious, hipster supply depot filled with v-necks: American Apparel. What's their objection to the store? Simply put: it's a chain store.

Cat Lincoln

Cat Lincoln is a writer and photographer, and lives in San Francisco with her husband. She is theoretically very private, but in practice will reveal almost anything if it will get a laugh.

Although now firmly a West Coast resident, Cat continues to be influenced by the strict fashion rules of her Boston roots. That means she wears white year round, but has the good grace to lie about it to her grandmother.

Celebrities make frequent appearances in her pieces, and Cat is able to expound at length on the (huge!) difference between People and Us Weekly to anyone who will listen. She can talk about hair for hours. Also, she is a Gemini, and yes, it matters.

Completely addicted to products and in the habit of telling strangers on the bus about her latest find, Cat is equally at home cruising Sephora, haunting the Walgreens makeup aisle or scoring extra samples from Neiman Marcus Cosmetic Professionals.

Cat loves a bargain, junior mints at the movies and wearing false eyelashes with heavy black eyeliner. A former corporate marketing executive, she is thrilled to be writing non-fiction.

You can get more Cat at:

Crazy cravings: Purple Suede Boot Lust

Filed under: Runway Trends, Accessories, Shoes

Seeing purple everywhere for fall has somehow invaded our brain and now we can't stop thinking about purple suede boots.

Even though they are completely impractical for the San Francisco winter rains we are sure to experience, we're so tempted to get a pair to wear on the rare clear day. They are dressy yet can go casual, and make a very definite fashion statement: Fear Not Color On Your Feet!

Up to the knee or gracing our ankles, sky high or in a more moderate medium heel, round, pointy or open-toed, you can find the purple suede boot that is perfect for you.

In the gallery, our top five choices. Now we just have to figure out which ones we can afford. As good as the Jimmy Choos look, at $1,395 it would be the boots or food -- we just can't afford both!

Styledash Giveaway: "Joy O Design" earrings as worn by Eva Longoria Parker

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Contests & Giveaways

We are frequently impressed by the (seemingly) effortless chic of celebrities like Eva Longoria Parker. Great dresses, flowing hair and always the perfect accessories.

This week's Styledash Giveaway brings you a little bit of that accessory fairy dust: a pair of beautiful Joy O Designs earrings, just like the ones Eva is wearing in this photo!

These arc drops have a light blue natural sapphire nuggets dangling from richly textured, hand-formed, hand-forged 14k gold fill wire. They are dressy enough for a movie premiere and simple enough to look great with jeans and a t-shirt at the grocery store.

Anne Hathaway is also a fan of the San Francisco-based Joy O Designs, and you've likely seen the handmade silver, gold and natural stone jewelry when it was featured in magazines like Lucky and In-Style.

Now you can be part of this fashion in-crowd with your very own pair!

  • To enter, leave a confirmed comment below telling us about your outfit that is perfect for these earrings!
  • The comment must be left before 5pm ET on Friday, August 8.
  • You may enter only once.
  • One winner will be selected in a random drawing.
  • One winner will receive one pair of Joy O Designs earrings (valued at $158.)

Experimental hairstyles: The sidewalk cut

There are a lot of people who don't really think there's anything magical about what a hairdresser does. It takes a long time, it's expensive, and -- above all else -- it tends to lead to horribly forced conversations. There is a way to get your hair cut for free, though. This dude in San Francisco did it, and all it took was a piece of yarn, a pair of scissor, and a sign that says "help cut my hair, take two snips." It's hard to imagine the conversation being too dull.

Letting a myriad of unwashed strangers get close to your head with a sharp pair of scissors doesn't sound like a good idea to us, but since someone else is doing it, we think it's an awesome social experiment. Not only that, but it doesn't look all that different from any other emo cut that a Russian school kid might get expelled for. The two snip per person technique is obviously not for everyone, but we bet the results are always interesting.

Soothe your sunburn with Burt's Bees aloe and buttermilk lotion

San Francisco summers are freezing cold. We usually spend June and July so bundled up that the sun doesn't have a chance to burn any body parts. We must admit: sunscreen is often an afterthought.

Last week we sat through a two hour graduation ceremony in Boston during a heatwave and received a fierce reminder of it's importance: glowing, red, sunburned arms.

This was a bad burn, and Lubriderm wasn't going to cut it, so we headed to Walgreens for aloe vera gel. Luckily we found something even better: Burt's Bees Soothingly Sensitive Aloe & Buttermilk Lotion.

Guerilla Gardens attract London fashionistas

Filed under: Events: On the Scene

Do you know what guerrilla gardening is? Neither did we! But it's popular enough to attract droves of fashionable Londoners who turned out last week to support Grun In London, an art exhibit inspired by concrete jungles.

Where in the world is MAX factor?

The new MAX Factor is all over magazines these days, with those Carmen Electra yellow eyelash ads. They're getting great buzz and the color palette is sizzling. We were dying to try that Vivid Impact mascara and report back to you.

Except we couldn't find it anywhere.

Walgreens? Nope. Rite Aid? Uh-uh. Target? Sorry. Sephora? Don't make us laugh.

Remember when: Timbuk2 messenger bags

Long ago, in the days before everybody and their brother rolled with a messenger bag, even before bike messenger extraordinaire Puck was on (and then voted off) MTV's The Real World, there was one messenger bag that everybody had to have: a black Timbuk2.

Sure, you may have gotten around town on a fixed-gear bike, and maybe you even wore an obscure Italian cycling cap with the brim flipped up, but without a Timbuk2 you were nothing. Straight out of the mean streets of San Francisco's financial district they came, and these bags took no prisoners.

Okay, so maybe these days you can order your own custom Timbuk2, and even Lands End makes a messenger bag. And, okay, perhaps the anti-establishment chic of the messenger bag is gone. But you can still go old school with a simple black Timbuk2.
