The Return of the Baggy Pants?

Phillip Lim's olive baggy trousersA few weeks ago at the Grammys, Jay-Z showcased his ode against the knot-crushing restrictiveness of the skinny jean. Like usual, his deeply meaningful fashion commentary lead us into a long rant about the future of men's pants and that perhaps we're approaching the end of the skinny jeans era. Apparently, we're not alone in that opinion. The news coming out of London Fashion Week indicates that many designers are pushing styles with pleats and room for your bankroll.

Jay-Z Says Skinny Jeans Crowd His Knots - The Tight Pants Debate

Filed under: Jeans, Men, Celebrities with Style

Jay-Z raps at the 2009 Grammy AwardsIf you watched Sunday night's 2009 Grammy Awards -- or you happened to flip past CBS at exactly the right moment like we did -- you got to see the most star-studded hip hop group since NWA performing a remixed version of "Paper Planes," entitled "Swagga Like Us." The show-stopping jam featured verses by Kanye West, Lil' Wayne, T.I., Jay-Z, and M.I.A -- but it was one of Jay-Z's rhymes that is sparking controversy in the world of hipster fashion, "no one on the corner/got a bop like this/don't wear skinny jeans/'cause my knots won't fit."

By 2010 all the girls in China will dress like Kate Moss

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Retail in China: it's all about the volume. Sir Philip Green, the owner of Topshop is all too aware of the potential profit once he gets there. Just to make sure he gets as much volume as possible, the rumor is that he asked Kate Moss to bring the lines she "designed" to China and be the face of the Topshop launch there.

A new way to get into your skinny jeans

Filed under: Clothing, Jeans, Celebrities with Style

Jessica Alba skinny jeansThin is in.

But it's a shame dieting can be so boring and exercise, for the most part, is such a chore. However, fashion fan and skinny girl Jessica Alba might have found a way around the boredom. Alba, who apparently shuns diets and personal trainers, has taken up a Nintendo Wii workout.

Nintendo Wii is the must-have video game console that works up a sweat. (Yep, a gaming system that isn't associated with sitting on your behind wasting the day away.) Nintendo Wii isn't just for dudes either. With Wii tennis and Wii boxing you can burn about 560 calories per hour. Nintendo is even coming out with a new game called Wii Fit that will be just like having a personal trainer.

Gaming fitness is a bandwagon I can certainly jump on. Besides, if it's good enough for Jessica, it's good enough for me. Plus, look at her rocking those skinny jeans. Dare I say thin-spiration?

Interested? You can win a Wii on ThisNext, but there is only a few days left so act fast.

Wide leg pants -- coming back or not?

So, if the 90s are back (and, by all accounts, they are) -- why aren't we seeing the wide-leg pants I remember from junior high?

Some are trying really hard to bring them back -- Gap, for instance, has a number of ultra wide-leg options for fall. Plus, a couple different influential bloggers have championed the move -- noting that everyone can look good in wide-legs, while wearing skinny jeans meant you had to be...well...skinny.

On the other hand, our very own Lauren thinks the new, more colorful skinny jeans will be all the rage or the next couple seasons, and FashionIndie thinks wide-legs make you look like a "90s reject."

So what gives? Personally, I'd love it if wide-legs came back. We can't stop the 90s from coming, and anything is better than those stupid high-waisted "mom jeans" designers keep trying to shove down our throats.

But what do you think?

The skinny jean trend adds an ankle zipper

The skinny jean trend has evolved slightly into skinny jeans with an ankle zipper. The ankle zip skinny jeans have been around for a while but just now seem to have caught on. They can be worn just like the originals, but also work well over boots instead of under them, with the zipper open and flared. I've also seen them with buttons instead of a zipper.

Personally I'm not crazy about the look, but then again I'm sort of done with the skinny jean trend entirely (yes, already). Like it or not, though, skinny jeans are going to be around for at least one more season. These new ankle zip skinny jeans are a happy medium if you want to give the skinny jean look a try without committing 100% to a trend that could be gone in another season or two. Right now at macys.com, ankle zip skinny jeans from JLO are under $40.

Style for thought: child or woman?

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

The International Herald Tribune has thought-provoking article that considers the fashion industry's current preference for the pre-pubescent girl over the woman. Normally, something this would not sit well with me -- I think people who think too much about the meaning of trends quickly become tedious. But with the recent ban on super-skinny models in Madrid and similar movements in other cities across the world, it raises the question of why any woman would want to dress like a child.

The article points to the Phoebe Philo's Chloe collection in which introduced the baby doll dress back into the fray. And then there's the skinny jeans phenomenon, followed by the jumper with the puffy blouse that also seems ubiquitous this fall. Clearly, these child-inspired trends are selling, even though it seems a little unclear why it is so. It's possible that the return of the child is just the reaction to the super-sexy designs of the late 1990s, but it's also possible that the fashion industry is just diving blindly into Peter Pan territory.

Blame stonewashed, high-waisted jeans on Kate Moss

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Are high-waisted, 1989-ish stonewashed jeans going to be the skinny jeans of next season?

I've been hearing about this trend since last winter, but now that Kate Moss chose to wear a pair to the announcement of her new plan to design for Topshop, I'm afraid it's actually going to catch on. These jeans, like skinny jeans, already have a one-word nickname of their own -- "mom" jeans.

I'll try to be objective and think of at least one positive quality of this new "mom" jean. Hmmm... they look like they'd be less drafty in the winter?

I'm all for higher waistlines if you're uncomfortable in or unflattered by low-rise jeans. But just know this: when you combine a higher waistline, looser legs, and that light stonewashed color, you're adding lots of visual volume to your lower half. And added volume isn't something that most women I know are looking for in a pair of pants.

Sienna Miller to launch skinny jean line

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

Actress Sienna Miller, who is better known for her lovers than she is for her on-screen performances, just agreed to design a line of signature skinny jeans. Miller, who came into the public eye through her on-again-off-again relationship with movie-star-cad-No. 1, Jude Law, will be collaborating with Pepe Jeans to develop a new denim collection. Of course, by "develop a hip denim collection," I mean that she will be the model in all of the ads. Come on -- can you really imagine little Sienna laboring away with a riveter and a sewing machine to create those essential samples? I didn't think so.

There is one interesting catch in this multi-million pound deal. Miller's contract stipulates that she can only wear Pepe Jeans. Of course, Sienna has already violated that contract by wearing a pair of LoFli jeans in a photograph. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you...
