One of Greensoul Shoes' Recycled sandalsWhile most of us aren't super pleased with the economy right now, one team of former investment bankers are viewing the financial collapse as a chance to start an eco-friendly footwear company with a heart of gold. Greensoul Shoes, co-founded by a former Bear Sterns banker, takes materials recovered from landfills by locals in Southeast Asia and constructs sandals to sell to the developed world. For each pair you buy, GreenSoul will donate a pair to a needy someone in the developing world.

American Apparel storefront in Key West, FloridaIn a nearly incomprehensible story that could only happen in Inner Mission San Francisco, Williamsburg, or Portland -- a group of progressive, socially-conscious hipsters with a penchant for v-neck t-shirts in San Francisco have successfully defeated plans to open a progressive, socially-conscious, hipster supply depot filled with v-necks: American Apparel. What's their objection to the store? Simply put: it's a chain store.

Pangea Collection supports Fair Trade Month - Social consciousness is always in style

We doubt anybody is unaware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but did you know that it's also Fair Trade Month? Cat brought us the scoop last week on Pangea Collection's fabulous Sterling Silver Heart Bracelet -- for every one purchased, $10 will go toward breast cancer research. But Pangea is doing more.

Throughout this entire month, Pangea Collection will donate $1 from any Fair Trade Jewelry order to Opportunity International, one of the largest micro-finance organizations supporting Fair Trade in the world. Prices are extremely reasonable, with most pieces being in the $20 to $30 range, which means they'd be a great little gift for a friend, or a gorgeous little pick-me-up for you!
