If you're as big a fan of street fashion as we are around here, you're going to love a new site called streetstyl.es. Lookbook.nu gives stylemakers a fashion diary

While we do love million-dollar fashion spreads in magazines, they're rarely as inspiring as shots of street style. (Without the benefit of A-list photographers, fussed-over lighting and a team of professional stylists, plenty of people dress quite well in day-to-day life, thank you.)

Lookbook.nu offers an ode to just those individuals. The online style diary, where members (like Lina, pictured above) upload their DIY fashion pics, recalls a cheekier, younger version of The Sartorialist. Populated by self-described artists, students, lovers and nobodies, Lookbook's San Franciscan founders call it a "social experiment in style." (We call it completely addicting to browse.)

With trendsetters from Estonia, Berlin, the Philippines, and Stockholm--among others--featured, you might even learn something about geography while you're at it.

The return of The Sartorialist

Filed under: Style in the News, Men

Style impresario Scott Schuman (also known as The Sartorialist) is back.

The blogger will be doing what he does best during New York Fashion Week: snapping a select few on-the-street looks that catch his eye.

With his penchant for relaxed but sophisticated style, Schuman's photographs are just as inspiring as anything that comes down the runway. (And they always leave us wishing we could pull off the effortless chic of his Parisian subjects.)

Check out his latest picks here. Just don't blame us if you're struck with the sudden urge to buy an all-new wardrobe.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art's street style exhibition

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Style in the News

In 1973, the LACMA unveiled "LA Flash." The exhibition featured photographs of 400 of the city's most stylish residents, collected by a handful of shutterbugs who wandered different neighborhoods, capturing the best of L.A. street style. Now, on its 25th anniversary, the museum will re-launch "LA Flash," which originally ran for three months, for one night only. The photos, according to The Los Angeles Times, are still a fashion inspiration: "Many of the original images, which have been digitally enhanced for the new showing, could have sprung from the latest issue of Vogue."

There's no doubt that "LA Flash" was a precursor to the ubiquitous girl-on-the-street magazine pages and blog features we see today. With that in mind, the museum will offer a modern spin on the idea by starting a new, street-style blog to celebrate its anniversary.

Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue

Filed under: Style in the News

Vice MagazineBloody brilliant. We're loving Vice Magazine's 2008 Fashion Issue, now available to view online in full. We especially love the column entitled "I Hate Fashion" written by Tracie Egan of Jezebel.com. Our sentiments exactly. But wait... we also totally identify with Christopher Bollen's article "I Love Fashion." Oh fashion, how we love to hate you! The trend reports for NYC and London are spot on as well, and hilarious to boot. And who but Vice would dare to cast porn star Sasha Grey in a provocative but very clever fashion spread? (Get it? Spread?) Seriously, Vice's snarky take on all things fashion is not to be missed.

What I Wore: Kimono Dress

Kimono Dress by Trashy DivaI almost made this a Dress of the Day post, except lately this is the dress I want to wear everyday. Yep, that's me at right, in my current favorite outfit.

I have to make an effort not to throw this same ensemble on day after day to head off to work. It really is an effort, too, because for some reason I'm totally in love with this look. It's so comfy and easy to wear... one day recently my alarm didn't go off and I woke up half an hour before I had to be at work. I threw this outfit on and my boss said I still looked fab.

Are you as smitten as I am? If so, you're in luck, because I'm going to tell you how to steal my look:

tentacle earrings: OctopusMe
octopus necklace: very similar to this one by dahliasforme
dress: Kimono Dress in navy floral by Trashy Diva
boots: Fluevog (of course!)

wardrobe_remix Top Pic(k)s

wardrobe_remixer mouthyspaceOne of my fashion obsessions is checking out all of the everyday looks that people put together to express themselves. We're talking REAL people here. Not celebrities, not uber-thin models. What do real people like you and me wear in their everyday lives? That's what the wardrobe_remix community on Flickr is all about exploring.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, I thought I'd start picking out some of my favorite recent remixers and posting them every week or so. Remember: these are real people, of all different shapes and sizes showing off their own personal style. You'll find everything here from mainstream mall finds to thrift store scores to haute couture and everything in between. There is no right or wrong. Or as Tricia would say, "It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it."

This week I noticed a lot of bright, bold pops of colors paired with neutrals, like in this outfit worn by user mouthyspace. I love the pairing of the simple red ribbon belt with this graphic print skirt.

Got a favorite recent wardrobe_remixer? Post the links to your faves in the comments!

Fashion off the streets at Flickr

wardrobe remixWe spent quite a bit of time browsing the runways from Fashion Week in New York, and we love to ogle photos of celebrities in the latest trends from high-end designers, but sometimes the best fashion inspiration comes from the average, yet stylish, person on the street. Wardrobe Remix is a photo pool over at photo-sharing site flickr that has over 1400 members who have uploaded more than 5000 photos of themselves in their stylish stuff. I wouldn't say that everything there is necessarily haute couture, but that is precisely the beauty of the photos -- these are everyday people who've put together great outfits right out of their closets.

Street style: Singapore

Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia. The nation is technically an island city-state located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, south of the Malaysian state of Johor, and north of the Indonesian Riau Islands. But what Singapore lacks in space, it makes up for in style.

The Clothes Project is a website that tracks the best of Singapore's street styles. Young people in Singapore blend the avant-garde dressing of Japan with more traditional island colors and patterns. If you aren't so much interested in the clothes, you should take a look at the site just to see Singapore's alluring night cityscape. Think colored lights reflecting on water surrounded by groves of palm trees.

When you say "Canadian Fashion" most people assume that you are talking about the international fashion hub, Vancouver. (Relax, Montreal, we know you're there. And if this was about you, we would have said "Quebecois Fashion.") Even though Vancouver is the reigning Canadian capital of runway shows and design houses, the truth is that Toronto has its own an unexpectedly vibrant street fashion culture. There's even a site dedicated to chronically the outfits of budding Canuck street fashionistas called Toronto Street Fashion.

For a city that spends half of the year beneath the ground in network of tunnels, the above-ground streets have a great deal of flair. Then again, I suppose the city needs to make up for January somehow – and that might as well be done by donning a pair of crazy green short-shorts in sunny July.

Style on the streets: Oslo

What do you know about Norway?

According to Wikipedia, Norway is officially known as the Kingdom of Norway. In Norwegian, that's Kongeriket Norge or Kongeriket Noreg. The country is located on the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula, bordering Sweden, Finland and Russia. Norway's extensive coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean is home to its famous fjords. (I love anything that starts with an 'fj'!)

Aside from the awesome fjords, Oslo – Norway's capital – has a vibrant street fashion life. If you're interested, there is a website called Oslotil, which posts daily snapshots of the hip, Northern European city's street-style. Eclectic dresses and wild accessories (think: over-sized sunglasses and trendy hats) seem to rule in this city. All in all, Oslo seems like a cross between Los Angeles casual and London bo-ho.
