Billabong Fashion Show

Filed under: Runway Trends, Events: On the Scene, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie, Celebrities with Style

Michael Buckner is a fashion and celebrity photographer who travels around the world taking pictures on the red carpet. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest entertainment industry events.

Thursday I shot inside all access at Billabong's Design for Humanity Fashion Show that benefited the Surfrider Foundation. I roamed on the carpet on Vine Street until the models walked down the runway to music spun by DJ Aoki. Prog rock revivalists MGMT played to a packed house.

The Surfrider Foundation is an environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the world's waves and beaches through conservation, so beach apparel was the focus.

Celebrity designers included Cory Kennedy, Lisa Kline, Jenny Han, Amber Valetta, Joy Bryant, and Charlotte Ronson. There were some throwbacks to the seventies and a tribute to the American flag to name a couple trends that Billabong hopes will catch on for Summer.

Celebrities Adrien Grenier, Cameron Richardson, Juliette Lewis, Maynard James Keenan of Tool, John Legend were on hand to catch a glimpse of the show.

Men's clothing at Target no longer lame

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing, Men

It's hard for men to find fashionable clothes that don't cost a fortune. We can either spend $40 on a t-shirt from our local vintage boutique, or suck it up and wear something lame from TJ Maxx.

Women, on the other hand, can just go to Target. Sure, everything they sell is a designer rip-off, and it's not like the clothes are Wal-Mart cheap, but their stuff is cute, trendy, and way less than other rip-off outlets (like Urban Outfitters, for instance).

Unfortunately, men's clothing at Target has always sucked. They didn't do a very good job mimicking their designs, or they copied Old Navy's collection (which was stupid-looking in the first place).

However, things may have changed. Over the weekend I discovered that Target's summer collection for men is actually very cool. They're selling these plaid shorts for $21.99, which I've seen all over town since it started getting hot back in April (and priced at around $70 in local boutiques), and these Judo-cut shorts for $19.99. A) guys in shorts is all the rage, B) plaid has been very in ever since the 90s started coming back, and C) I've been dying to try out long shorts (the Judo-cut), in an homage to my skateboarding brethren circa 1997 -- now I can!

So dudes -- while I never could've imagined that I'd be saying this -- if you want to look cool this summer without spending all your money on a new wardrobe, head to Target.

Spandex biker shorts: the new summer fad?

Filed under: Stores We Love, Clothing

If there's one style mishap that should never, ever be resurrected, it's biker shorts. The ultra-tight spandex look is great for when you're riding in the Tour de France, but is shocking and wrong on random people walking down the street.

Nevertheless, they appear to making a comeback.

According to Catwalk Queen, these are the new, shorter version of leggings, created for the hot summer weather. But don't be fooled -- even though leggings were exceptionally trendy all winter long, you will look like an insane person if you make these spandex eyesores a prominent part of your summer wardrobe.

That said, there's plenty of people that disagree with me on this -- most notably Top Shop, American Apparel, and Oasis. All three stores have versions of the shorts available on their websites.

When did Jessica Simpson turn orange?

I know, it's been a long, dreary winter, and now you're trying to get tan so you don't look pasty the first time you set foot on the beach. Fine. I understand. But for crying out loud, when are people going to understand that self-tanning makes you look awful -- and orange.

To be honest, I have no idea if Jessica Simpson has been self-tanning out of a bottle. Odds are, probably not. Maybe she's just been eating a lot of carrots, but for whatever reason, she's a disturbing color of burnt sienna these days, and, thus, I feel photos of her should come with a warning:

"While this person is indeed famous, please note that no one will find you attractive if you look like a crayon in a suit."

Just sayin'.

What not to wear to work this summer

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Clothing

It's getting hot again -- finally! Time to get out and do some shopping for fun summer looks. However, if you work in an office (and you'd like to continue doing so), a recent survey of Monster.com users points to a few things you should definitely avoid.

Above all else, don't wear tank tops! This should be obvious, but apparently there's a number of women who show up to work with their bra showing. I guess if you're working in advertising, gaming, or some other highly-creative industry, you might be able to get away with showing a little more skin, but I'd still think twice -- especially if you want to be taken seriously.

Secondly, ditch the flip-flops. Don't get me wrong -- I live in Austin, where flip-flop sandals are a staple for every man, woman and child -- but unless they're incredibly classy (as in, you paid way too much for them), they make you look like a college student, and aren't appropriate for work.

Oddly, Hawaiian prints also ranked high on the list, which you should never wear, ever, under any circumstances. So quickly donate all that stuff to your local Goodwill before you're tempted to go crazy on your next casual Friday.

But beyond the fashion foul-ups, what you wear affects your demeanor, which will, in turn, affect your performance at the office. Trust me -- about two months ago I started working out of my house, and ever since then I've been working in my pajamas. I now have such a slacker attitude, I'm sure no one will ever hire me to work in an office ever again.

Guys: here's how to stay cool and look good this summer

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men

It's only April, and we've already had a couple 80-degree days down here in Texas. Plus, since I take care of my daughter in the afternoons, I can't hole myself inside air conditioned offices and apartments all day like I did last summer. Hence, therefore, and in conclusion, I figured it's about time I found myself some shorts.

Shorts? For real?

For real.

I've been avoiding shorts for years -- namely, because I thought they looked dumb on any guy over the age of 13 who wasn't playing a sport. But recently the laid-back look is calling to me, and it's coming from an unexpected place: "urban" fashion.

I don't have anything against urban fashion -- in fact, I'm not entirely sure what that means. All I know is that it's usually not to my taste, but High Snobriety, one of the best sites on the subject, recently brought two looks to my attention that are exactly how I think the casually fashionable man should be dressing during the blindingly-hot days of summer.

First, the new Madras collection from APC. It's simple, straightforward, but just sophisticated enough to make it an incredibly stylish choice. Notice the way they combine either patterned shorts with solid tops, or vice versa, to keep the outfits fun and summer-ish without being too loud.

And speaking of loud, that brings us to the Comme des Garcons x Fred Perry from Dover Street Market. This is the time of year when you can get away with something bright, colorful and comfortable, and this look is just how to do it right.

So don't fear the heat, dudes. You can now keep cool and look cool all summer long.

That t-shirt makes me wanna kiss you

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Clothing, Men

With summer right around the corner, it's time to start looking for fashionable ways to keep yourself cool. An easy way is to find some great t-shirts -- something fun that nobody else will have that'll help you stand out from the crowd.

The first time, grunge was cool. It was easy to do this on the cheap by raiding thrift store bargain bins for that delightfully off-beat t-shirt that gained a sense of irony when worn by someone cool (like you). Now that there's "vintage" and "high end re-sale" shops that gobble up all the really good stuff, you might as well spend your money on something new.

Like this dazzling shirt from BLACKTOOTH. It's simple, funny, and eye-catching without trying too hard (which is the death of nearly all "clever" t-shirts). The black lines in the back keep it from being too straightforward, and I love that there's lipstick on the teeth.

Because remember, nothing says "I'm too cool to care about how I look" more than a carefully chosen imperfection.
