Criminal fashion: Swedish prisoners get new designer uniforms

Filed under: Style in the News

While we don't usually follow the latest trends at prison fashion shows, we do like to keep up with fashion crimes and cruel and unusual fashion punishment. This news would fall into the latter category. Apparently, Sweden's female inmate uniforms -- consisting of unisex gray t-shirts and sweatpants -- have long been considered a crime against femininity by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

That's why a group of student designers were asked to get the ladies into some respectable rags. Aspiring fashionistas from the Beckmans School of Design went to work at designing cheap, durable and more effeminatly-colored uniforms. The new styles will allow women to carry out their sentences with a bit of self-esteem and individuality -- since the new uniforms will include subtle variations. Also, since many of the inmates happen to be meth-addicts, the uniforms can expand as they gain weight.

The school may have designed the more humane outfits, but they're not doing all the work -- inmates will construct the uniforms. BTW, this is not a picture of of the new uniforms.

Vincent Shoes: Fun shoes for fun kids

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Shoes, Vintage and Retro, Kids and Babies

Once upon a time (1998) a little boy named Vincent was born in a land far, far away (Stockholm, Sweden). His uncle Thomas and his partner Patrick wanted to buy him some shoes, "something fun, a little functional, too."

Guess what they couldn't find. If you said "fun and functional kid shoes" you'd be right. You guys are good at this guessing stuff.

Thomas and Patrick were both well-versed in the fashion world and they decided to fill the void that they had discovered. A year later Vincent Shoes opened its first store and they all lived happily ever after.

Eton create world's most expensive shirt

We confess: we hadn't heard of Eton shirts before, but we probably should have, as the Swedish company is now celebrating its 80th birthday. In honor of the event, the company has created an ultra-special shirt with a price point well out of reach of everyone except the Hollywood glitterati.

Apparently nothing says "Yay! It's our birthday!" better than making a shirt from Egyptian cotton with diamond-encrusted studs and cufflinks. As far as we know, this makes it the most expensive shirt in the world, with a value of £23,000 ($46,700).

The shirt isn't yet available to buy, though: because it's a one-off, it is first... wait for it!... touring the world, making stops at Eton stores in Milan, LA and Stockholm before being auctioned for charity sometime in 2009.

In other words, this shirt has more diamonds than we ever will and is better traveled than us, too.

Light jackets for spring and beyond

In the header on Dunderdon's website it says: Work. Wear. That pretty much says it all. Of course we like to say: Work? Where? Then we run like hell in the opposite direction. It's a survival thing.

Dunderdon was created by carpenter Per-Ivan Hagberg and is considered Sweden's most innovative work-wear company.

Their designs are made for the worker, from blue-collar professionals to no-collar creative-types (hey, that's us!), so you know that durability is key, but that doesn't mean they slack on style.

Luke Wilson designs for Puma Golf

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Videos, Celebrities with Style

We've seen him in the role of tennis superstar Richie "the baumer" Tenenbaum, but most people aren't aware that Luke Wilson is actually a kick-butt golfer. In fact, he's listed as one of the Top 40 Hollywood golfers. That's why he teamed up with Swedish golfing sensation Johan Edfors to put together a collection of golf apparel set to be released this spring. The two were selected by Puma to design this summer's chrome collection -- part of a conscious effort to bring some style and "bling" back into the boring world of golf attire.

Sweden has more than IKEA: Get to know Lamilla

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

They've been called the next upcoming designers by some of Sweden's biggest magazines, and they have a hot collection to back it up. Lamija Suljevic and Gabomilla Nielsen's fashion label, LAMILLA, is edgy and raw and poised to strike it big. But how did LAMILLA come about?

Lamija and Gabomilla, who are both just 20 years old, met about five years ago in design school and immediately started sewing together. They started their label last summer after graduating and showed their first collection during Stockholm Fashion Week.

The spring/summer 2008 theme is 'porcelain nightmare,' exhibiting a contrast of smooth and raw, black and white, hard and soft materials. This is no surprise since the two designers have such different inspirations -- Lamija loves everything Parisian and antique while Gabomilla is inspired by fashion on the street and Asian movies. They keep a limited collection so they can continue to offer a luxury project to their customers, but by next month they hope to have online shopping available on their website.

The Swedes are angry at Marc Jacobs

Filed under: Style in the News

Marc Jacobs has ripped off an old Swedish man! Marc is currently marketing a scarf that looks identical a little similar to a design created in the 1950's in a county called Harjedalen up in the north of Sweden. A man named Göran Olofsson says his father came up with the design way back in the day when he used to draw sketches and sell them to tourists. The design was so popular that he had it printed on some scarves and began selling them.

It appears one of these scarves made it's way into the U.S., found it's way into Marc Jacobs' greasy little fingers, and the rest is history. The only difference between Marc's scarf and Olofsson's scarf is that above the design Marc removed the lettering that had the name of the town, and replaced it with, "Marc Jacobs since 1984."

Olofsson has written to Marc to try and get some clarification. He's open to selling the copyright if the right offer is made. As for what he thinks of his dad's design, he says, "I suppose my father was before his time."

Yeah that. Or, umm, maybe Marc Jacobs is crazy. The scarf is so hideous I don't know why anyone would buy it as a souvenir, let alone steal the copyright and try to pass it off as fashion! You can check out The Cut for a side by side comparison.

If I had to guess what's going to happen, I'd say Marc will probably have to offer Olofsson a ridiculous amount of money in order to avoid a lawsuit -- all for a picture of some goats in the mountains.

Was it worth Marc, was it really worth it?

The ugliest jeans I've ever seen: Eiffel Tower

cheap monday eiffel tower jeansInspired by Anne's post about clothing line Cheap Monday, I poked around the web to see what else was out there for the hottest thing out of Sweden since Abba. I came across quite possibly the ugliest jeans I have ever seen in the world. Ever.

They are called "Eiffel Tower," and I am going to guess that it's inspired by its tall, narrow silhouette that comes from skin-tight legs and the highest waistline I've seen on jeans since Saturday Night Live's androgynous Pat. Apparently, the "super high-waisted jean" is all the rage in Europe, and while some extreme styles might look good on a runway model, I cannot see how these jeans look good on anyone. The back view is about 100 times worse and have permanently scarred my retinas. They almost make the plain old skinny jean look...cute.

The jeans, if you're daring enough to climb the heights of the Eiffel Tower, are available for $65 at Blue Bee.
