Everything is a fashion thing

Filed under: Clothing, Men, Kids and Babies

That is one hot melon baller. From time to time we at Styledash will cover items and topics that seem only tangentially related to fashion -- from a schlumpy anti-fashion celebrity to kitchen supplies, and it might be cause for confusion -- why spend the space on a fashion blog to talk about seemingly non-fashion things?

We understand how this is perplexing because not only is this blog called "Styledash", which implies a commitment to fashion coverage and therefore unsurprising dealings in fashion commentary, but the idea of a "fashion thing" vs. a non-"fashion thing" is peculiar. We're not sure that there's a dichotomy at all, really -- in fact we are pretty certain that every thing, to an extent, is a fashion thing.

MovieStyle: Funny Face

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

If you liked the high-fashion world in The Devil Wears Prada, you should check out Audrey Hepburn's 1957 film, Funny Face. Granted, it's a much tamer vision of the world of fashion than the one we saw with Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, but that's part of this classic film's charm. Funny Face follows the young ingenue Jo Stockton (Hepburn) as she travels to Paris to model high-end fashions for the famous photographer Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire. If you have a soft spot for Gershwin, 1950s Paris, and for vintage Givenchy clothes, Funny Face is the film for you.

Adieu, Rochas!

I once had a nutcase boss who had placed a strict moratorium on use of the word "pantsuit." I'm sure she didn't have an acutal reason for the ban -- it was more like she did it to exercise control over her underlings. Anyway, the running joke in my office was that the Devil, in fact, did not wear Prada -- she wore Rochas! (FYI : Rochas popularized the pantsuit.)

But the pantsuit-happy Rochas is no more. The Parisian design house will close its doors following the fall collection this year. The reason? Well, it seems that its parent company, pharmaceutical power-house Procter and Gamble didn't know enough about the ready-to-wear fashion business to turn a profit.

As a result, designer Oliver Theyskens will soon be out of work, and the Devil will have to go back to wearing Prada.
