Tom Ford Unveils $990 Recession Jeans

Tom Ford in a tuxedoNot to be left out of the parade of designers launching exorbitantly overpriced fashion items in the middle of a downward spiraling financial crisis, Tom Ford is seizing the moment to roll out his new $990 jeans. While it's true, they hardly rival the $43,000 Brioni suit launched this month -- for blue jeans they're still sky high. So what exactly is so special about these jeans ? Does the term jeans still apply when you're talking about $990 denim trousers?

Tom Ford unveils $475 tanning goggles - Things we can't afford

What's the point of wearing a pair of $475 goggles in a tiny glass bed where nobody can admire them? We're not sure, but we think it has something to do with being extravagantly wealthy. If we ever decided to tan our sickly pale skin, we would probably have to go with the freebies -- but there's no doubt that these Tom Ford tanning goggles are the bee's knees when it comes to tanning bed eyewear. Then again, who really cares that much about goggles no one can see?

I want that! Rachel Zoe in Tom Ford "Raquel"

A few days ago, a loyal reader by the name of Jennifer Petino was pondering where fashionista Rachel Zoe acquired the glasses she's wearing in this photo at the Spring 2009 fashion week in NYC. Lucky for Jennifer, she came to the right source.

After a little research and help from our friends at CelebrityStyleGuide, we figured out that these are indeed Tom Ford's Raquel glasses. A celebrity favorite, they've also been spotted on faces like Demi Moore.

Thanks for the questions! Keep them coming!

Music and fashion are intrinsically linked. The Queen of Pop knows that. So, when Madonna performs, her costumes come from nothing but the best designers available.

The Tom Ford webcam incident

Apparently, celebrity blogging can be a dangerous business. Just ask George Johnson, a blogger and newspaper editor in Santa Fe. When he discovered that Tom Ford was building a mansion across the street, he did what any good neighbor would do -- put up a webcam. Then last Monday, while he and his wife were asleep in their bedroom, expert cat burglars broke into the office where Johnson was filming and made off with his Mac Pro, 2 monitors, hard drive, and of course -- the Tom Ford webcam.

Now, we're not trying to say that the webcam espionage had anything to do with the burglary, we're just pointing out that a coincidence occurred when a blogger was spying on a international celebrity. We don't really understand why the guy wanted to video tape the construction anyway. We've seen homes being built, it's a mind-numbing. Maybe he was hoping to catch a couple pics of Ford inspecting the building progress. Sinister.

Tom Ford, we love your accent

Filed under: Style in the News

Exceptional faux British accents. How many Americans have them? Madonna swears she owns a convincing one. We certainly don't. The last time we tried to pretend as if we were reared on fish and chips it ended with our friends giving us the stink eye and mumbling, "never again."

Tom Ford: why don't you want to see male full-frontal?

Filed under: Style in the News

Tom Ford is certainly not the first designer to try to blur the line between porn and fashion advertising -- not by a long shot. But, unlike many others, Ford seems to think his scandalous ads filled with soft-core and Eyes Wide Shut-esque scenes are above reproach. To be specific, Ford feels that he's battling against an unfair double standard -- he says that when it comes to fashion photography, male nudity is getting the shaft.

Penises! There, I said it. Tom Ford wants to showcase the one-eyed trouser snake to help him sell suits, eyewear, and a bunch of other non-penis related fashion items. Ford's latest campaign features his raciest set of ads yet, partly because they feature full-frontal male nudity. Accompanying the new campaign, he penned an essay in this month's GQ Style where he outlined his passionate quest to force the public accept the presence of artfully-lit dongs in fashion advertising.

Italy bans Tom Ford ad

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Considering that the other ads in this campaign consisted of images like a woman grabbing a man's crotch, and a nude woman ironing while a man smokes a cigar and drinks some champagne -- it's hard to understand why the Italian Advertising Institute singled out this ad for banishment. For some weird reason, this is the straw that broke the camels back.

Three women's magazines that contain the banned ad have already been published, but the rest will have to be re-printed, or else be put on the shelf with the nudie magazines. Geez, that's a lot of wasted paper. We have to hand it to Ford, not only does he make great suits and sunglasses that you can find at Costco, but he turns out some of the most provocatively sexy ads around.

Tom Ford makes nice suits, wants to fix Obama's wardrobe

Filed under: Style in the News

Unlike presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama hasn't faced too much scrutiny about his wardrobe choices. In fact, Obama's finely-tuned fashion sense inspired Paper magazine to devote a whole fashion spread to him entitled "Mr. President."

But there seems to be one brave soul who thinks the junior Illinois senator is in dire need of a suit overhaul.

Tom Ford is going to procreate in 2008!

Filed under: Style in the News

Tom Ford is going to procreate in 2008. His partner Richard Buckley has been resisting the idea of fatherhood. But, it looks like Tom has finally talked him into it.

In a new interview with Fantastic Man, he talks about wanting to have a baby saying, "It will be biologically mine. I mean, I'm a lot younger. If things follow their natural order he'll [Richard] probably leave the planet ahead of me and I can't not have had something I've wanted forever. I've always wanted kids. I don't want to get to 75 years old and just have made a lot of dresses, done some houses."

And of course, with Tom there's never a dull moment. He kept the interview interesting speaking out on other topics like genitalia too, "I don't find the human body offensive. I don't find a guy's cock or a woman's vagina offensive; in fact, I find them beautiful. I would put them on an ad with a perfume bottle if I could get away with it."

I wish he would just do it. Wouldn't that be a sight to see? Can you imagine the women in department stores trying to hawk Eau de Vajayjay to the old ladies shopping?

Also touched upon -- Tom doesn't think Parisian men dress well. He had sex with girls at 14 before he knew which side he really played for. And he won't retire until he drops dead.

Tom Ford at Costco

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News

Next time you're at Costco picking up a 5 gallon bucket of potato salad, you might want to stroll over to the sunglasses department. Tom Ford's eyewear is joining the surprisingly long list of designer goods being sold at the low-priced megamart. Prada, Versace, Fendi, and now Tom Ford -- it's all there for Costco members.

Yeah, I was surprised too -- I didn't even know that you could buy individually packaged sunglasses at Costco, much less a $1,300 purse. No, seriously, doesn't it seem sorta wrong to be buying designer handbags at Costco? What's next Cristal on the beer aisle at Wal-Mart?

If you're like me -- totally clueless about the world of Costco -- you ought to take a look at their website; just for your own entertainment. In the men's apparel section, you can grab anything from Citzens of Humanity jeans to a pair of teflon-coated mechanic's coveralls -- truly your 1-stop shop. Capitalism at its finest.

James Bond wept

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

As a 00 agent, you've got to remain somewhat detached from you work. You can't get on with your everyday business if you're constant forming emotional attachments with people and causes. Tasks like destroying life and property may get easier with time -- but some of the things you're asked to do as a secret agent no man could ever get over.

For Daniel Craig, that unforgivable sin comes in the form of tearing up his beautiful Tom Ford suits. During the filming of the upcoming 007 thriller, Quantum of Solace, Craig had to destroy 40 of his favorite suits in the world -- and apparently it was weighing heavily on his conscience. According to him, it's a royal bummer: "it makes me weep every time... They are great suits."

I knew he was getting a little attached to the high end menswear a few months ago, but these new reports have really opened my eyes to one of the unseen hardships of making secret agent movies. Destroying even one Tom Ford suit has got to be the fashion equivalent to putting down Old Yeller.

Tom Ford's plans for world domination

Filed under: Style in the News

When Tom Ford opened his palace of male opulence in New York it seemed like it would be a one-shot deal. But Tom, who revitalized Gucci and then took off for a career as a film director (allegedly), seems to have a new goal: total world domination. He has announced a worldwide expansion plan that puts a flagship store in Milan, London, Los Angeles and Hawaii. Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus will also have in-store shops starting in the spring.

Domenico de Sole, his business partner has been quoted as saying that they want to be the first luxury brand of the new century. For Tom, luxury is sleek with a side of sass: elegant bespoke suits, heavy, seductive perfumes, leather and velvet and lush sensuality.

The big question is when is Tom going to head back into women's wear. A Suzy Menkes article in the International Herald Tribune quotes Tom as saying that he has no immediate plans to move back into designing for women but that when he does he wants to do something new and dramatic that isn't on the market.
