CFDA - Cross-Dressing Designers Honored

Filed under: Style in the News

The CFDA's 21 nominees showcased their work in an unconventional way – by modeling the pieces themselves, WWD reports. Not so unusual for Rodarte's Laura and Kate Mulleavy, who are up for womenswear designer of the year, to step into their own creations. But Jason Wu? Yep, he dressed up -- in a dress. (Yes, that's Jason Wu of Michelle Obama, one-shoulder Inauguration dress fame.)

The end result only confirms Wu's creativity, as he paired a chiffon gown with a sleek suit.

Michelle Obama - Washington Post Chooses Green Inaugural Gown

Filed under: Style in the News

Recently, the Washington Post held a First Lady Formalwear Contest, allowing readers to submit their designs for Michelle Obama's inaugural gown. Robin Givhan was the Washington Post writer in charge of selecting a winner, and while there were a couple of others we might have picked, we have to admit she made a pretty good choice with Katie Ermilio's deep forest green creation. It's elegant, appropriately youthful, striking, and sexy without showing too much of anything. And, with the suggested floor-length cape in dove gray, it's positively regal.

The Post isn't the only publication wondering what Michelle should wear for the big night -- check out the sketches WWD got from some of the country's most prominent designers below!

What Should Michelle Wear?

On January 20th 2009, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President -- instantly becoming one of the most significant leaders in United States history. What will he say? How will he act? And, most importantly, what will Michelle wear?

Style bible Women's Wear Daily has been wondering the same thing, and enlisted the world's most prominent designers to sketch ideas for the future First Lady. Check out our favorites from the American designers.

    Women's Wear Daily

Purple is undoubtedly the "it" color of the season, and Isaac Mizrahi offers a fashion-forward option that (at least to us) seems the most in keeping with what Michelle normally wears. Bonus points for offering options for Sasha and Malia, too!

    Women's Wear Daily

Regal, elegant and timeless -- a stunning formal gown from Michael Kors.

    Women's Wear Daily

The First Family would certainly be the center of attention in Oscar de la Renta's trio of red, white and blue confections.

    Women's Wear Daily

Peter Som channels Jackie K. to offer Michelle O a totally timeless, utterly sophisticated "winter white" gown.

    Women's Wear Daily

The President-elect has sworn to work closely with both parties to unite the country. And with Reem Acra's brash, take-no-prisoners gown in Republican red, his wife could show her support for that agenda on her first night as First Lady.

    Women's Wear Daily

Tracy Reese suggests a delightfully elegant, classically feminine gown for the lady of the hour.

    Women's Wear Daily

Betsey Johnson's gown gives a nod to her punk-rock sensibility, while boldly embracing the patriotism of the occasion.

    Women's Wear Daily

A marked contrast from Betsey's in-your-face, inauguration-ball bananza is an ultra-refined evening gown by Diane Von Furstenberg.

Failing economy = fewer cashmere sweaters

Filed under: Style in the News

Another sign that our economy is in real trouble? Cashmere is no longer in demand. Cashmere producers and designers are scaling back on the luxury knit as manufacturing prices rise and consumers shy away from spending on luxury products.

Jeremy Scott for Adidas: "Originals by Originals"

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing

Jeremy Scott has signed on to design his own line for Adidas' "Originals by Originals" collection, following streetwear designers Alyasha Owerka-Moore and Kazuki.

Scott, an American designer known for his punk-rock aesthetic and avant-garde silhouettes, will create both footwear and clothing for the athletic-wear giant. The line will be available in February 2009.

"It was proposed to me as complete freedom, to really do what I wanted," Scott told WWD. If that's the case, brace yourselves--one-legged track pants may be in our future.

Karl Lagerfeld stops French traffic

"It's yellow, it's ugly, it doesn't go with anything, but it could save your life."

This is the tag line on France's new road-safety campaign for summer, which they've asked their super iconic countryman, Karl Lagerfeld, to star in.

Cry me a river, Marc Jacobs...

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Fashion Week

Fashion shows are always late. But what happens when fashionably late becomes disrespectfully late?

For one thing, it gets ugly. Just ask Marc Jacobs, who has had the unfortunate luck of being the guy who pushed the fashion timetable just a little too far.

When I first heard about this story, I kind of felt sorry for Jacobs. I'm usually running late, so I can sympathize with slight delays. But Readers, Jacobs was not just a few minutes late; it was TWO HOURS LATE!

The worst part of the story is Marc Jacob's excuse for the late start. He complained to WWD that the delay was due to the fact that Fashion Week was way too early. (Instead of falling in late September, the fall shows took place in early September to avoid the Jewish High Holidays.)

My guess is that Marc's cocktail hour ran a little late, and he just assumed (wrongly) that everyone loved him enough to wait around for his collection. But it turns out that the Marc Jacobs-pandering media can only take so much. As Suzy Menkes put it: "I would like to murder him with my bare hands and never see another Marc Jacobs show as long as I live."

WWD gets an online make-over

Filed under: Style in the News

Women's Wear Daily is fashion equivalent of the Oxford English Dictionary. Until recently, the online nexus of this major fashion publication was about as clunky and ugly as the free websites you used to be create with a Geocities account.

Thanks to massive face-lift, WWD.com has finally joined the rest of us in Web 2.0 -- or is this 3.0? I can never remember.

What has changed on the website?

1. The black background is now white/creme.
2. The fonts are readable and appealing.
3. Columns are clearly delineated.
4. The photographs are larger.
5. Ads are unobtrusive.

Good work, WWD.com! And you thought no one would notice...

Poor Cindy Crawford...

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Life can be brutal for aging supermodels -- she's too old for editorial work. She's a little too aged to do beauty beauty shots. Even companies like Eileen Fischer and St. John's, which are typically geared towards the older woman have now started to use models under 30 in their campaigns.

Past the age of 35, a model pretty much has to take what she can get to pay the bills and just hope that as you fade into obscurity everyone else will remember you best for what you did in your early career. A case in point is Cindy Crawford's latest ad campaign for the Turkish Leather Industry, which was printed in yesterday's WWD.

Don't worry, Cindy. I'll always remember you for the Diet Coke commercial.
