Beyonce's Alarming 'Do

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Hair Cut and Style

Who hasn't had an embarrassing trip through airport security. Maybe it's your belt, or your sunglasses, or maybe it's your bellybutton ring. Beyoncé is no exception -- the curvaceous chanteuse recently found herself held up at LAX security.

Style Evolution: Beyonce

From a 17-year-old girl group singer to a 27-year-old superstar, Beyoncé Knowles's career and fashion sense have exploded. With her third solo album I am...Sasha Fierce hitting stories this week, Stylelist took a look back at the star's not- always-stylish evolution.

Can you find Beyoncé in this picture? B -- second from right -- has come a long way from this sari-clad stop at the 1998 Soul Train awards with the members of Destiny's Child.

At the 1999 Soul Train Awards, the girls of Destiny's Child were a purple haze of taffeta.

Don't blame Beyoncé for the group's third straight matchy-matchy trip to the 2000 Soul Train Awards. Blame her mom. Until recently, Tina Knowles was responsible for all of her daughter's red carpet...um...moments. (Maybe that's why the Soul Train Awards went kaput.)

Making waves? Working the red carpet the 9th Annual MTV Movie Awards in 2000 Beyoncé coordinated the crimping pattern in her hair to the wavy pattern in her dress.

The 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001 were clearly a high point in Beyoncé's early career. Sadly the same can't be said for her fashion choice.

Don't tell mama. Perhaps in an attempt to bond with their young audience, Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle dressed as Girl Scouts for Nickelodeon's 14th Annual Kid's Choice in 2001.

Fans turned up to meet Destiny's Child while they were promoting their mega hit "Survivor" in 2001. Instead, they were greeted by technicolor cowgirls.

At least she had the good sense to avoid a major J-Lo underwear snafu by wearing pasties under her sheer genie suit at the 2002 Grammy Awards.

She ditched the shoes, but still was setting off the metal detector, and it turned out that the problem was all in her head. Erm, her hair, rather. Not so surprising, considering her impressive wig collection, right?

We haven't had that particular problem, but we've definitely had our share of embarrassing moments in the security line (one involving an electric razor that got switched on and hummed its way through the x-ray machine). We've definitely learned to choose our traveling outfits based on how easily they'll go through airport security. How about you? What's your most embarrassing airport security gaffe? Hair Raising Star Styles

    Jada Pinkett Smith
Please tell us this mullet chop job is for a movie. When Jada's hair is slightly grown out, shiny and sleek, its easy to see why she and her hunky hubby are considered one of Hollywood's most stylish couples.

At her best, Katherine Heigl successfully channels Veronica Lake. But with too much product, her locks are dingy: No self-respecting bridesmaid would ever leave the house with hair that looks like it was inspired by "There's Something About Mary".

    Alexandra Wyman, WireImage.com

    Christina Aguilera
Only Bo Derek could be a perfect "10" in cornrows. Her new mommy makeover included trading her Dirrty 'do for Marilyn Monroe-inspired platinum blonde waves

    Victoria Beckham
Posh pioneered the blunt bob trend -- and it suits her no-nonsense fashion style perfectly. In this uptight up-do (r.), she looks like she's taking her reputation as an ice queen a little too seriously

    Paris Hilton
Despite her privileged background, Paris has a hard time pulling off the sophisticated debutante look. A flirty asymmetrical bob works better for L.A.'s biggest party girl

    Dimitrios Kambouris, WireImage.com

    Katie Holmes
Katie's tousled tresses make her look like she's playing dress-up. Her Posh-inspired bob and bangs are picture perfect Hollywood Wife.

    Mary-Kate Olsen
She's known for her eccentric style, but Mary Kate's Marc Jacobs' headband is less modern fashion icon, more Jane Fonda (circa 1982).
Tousled blonde tresses are better on a 22-year-old, no matter how many millions she's got

    Fergie
Hey, Fergie -- Bret Michaels wants his look back. The star is far more Glamorous when she wears her honey hair wavy and free.

    Jeffrey Mayer, WireImage.com

    Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett's super-poufy beehive doesn't create much buzz. A more natural style (l.) suits the pretty young star.

    Alicia Keys
Hey Alicia -- No One should be using the "Coneheads" for fashion inspiration! Keys' classic beauty shines in her natural curls.

Traveling in style - High-end fashion luggage

We recently got a matching set of luggage. It's great -- it's red and easy to pick out when it comes out on the conveyor. Not the most stylish thing in the world, but it came with an enormous cosmetics case, so we're happy.

However, we started looking around at some of the seriously stylish luggage utilized by the rich and famous, and now we have bag envy. This Forbes article makes a really good point -- if you're carrying around expensive designer clothes, shouldn't you keep those clothes in a suitcase befitting them?

Get your makeover at the airport

You wouldn't think of Lancome as a brand associated with flying, but that might change with the Lancome Happy Boarding program. Happy Boarding is a luxury lounge space, located inside or near the Lancome store. Inside the lounge area, customers can get massages, makeovers and and beauty "check-ups". The Happy Boarding treatment program is for men and women and the full four-step experience includes a massage, a skin check-up, a make-over and advice about beauty tricks and tips. Happy Boarding events have already taken place at Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport and in the Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. Given the proliferation of spas in airports, it makes sense that the makeup counter should move in too. They should get one of these in LAX for stars to get their touch-ups before facing the paparazzi at the luggage carousel.
