Kris Allen's Lucky Pair of Jeans?

This week, Kris Allen totally dodged a bullet on "American Idol." The "dark horse" contestant managed to come out of nowhere to prevent the seemingly inevitable face-off between Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert. With this turn of events, it comes down to Kris and Adam.

Sure, Kris is a great singer, but is that what really made the difference? We think Kris' come-from-behind win is a sign that America likes his style.

If we had to pinpoint exactly what gave Kris Allen the edge, we'd say it was his lucky jeans. Not Lucky Brand jeans, mind you -- we mean jeans that actually worked as a good luck charm.

Adrien Brody's Blue Hair Gets Rave Reviews

Filed under: Men, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes, Hair Cut and Style

Adrian Photo by Getty Images.

Last Thursday, Adrien Brody rolled up to a screening of The Brothers Bloom (maybe he thought it was called The Brothers Blue) with an eye-catching new do. Problem was, it consisted of roughly a dozen blue-highlighted chunks poking out of his typically messy and understated hair.

Really, Adrien? Really? All he needed was a glow stick and a pacifier to complete his "I'm a rebellious teenager" look. We're really not quite sure what's going on with this shaggy mess (hopefully those blue streaks are just extensions), and we have absolutely no idea what Adrien is shooting for -- but it definitely got our attention. Not to mention, his experimentation brings up a pretty valid beauty question: is pink, blue, orange, purple, etc. hair dye fair game for anyone over the age of 25?

Maybe Adrien got the blue streaks for an upcoming role in a movie about people who follow jam bands? That would totally explain it. Otherwise, we say leave rainbow colored hair dye to those who don't look like they need it to cover their gray.

The NY Post is claiming that Adrien's new 'do is inspired by none other than "American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert, whose glam rock style is taking the nation by storm. Again, really, Adrien? Really?

Eurovision Song Contest - When Fashion And Music Fight, Everyone Wins

Filed under: Style in the News

eurovision
Every year since 1956, Europe has hosted a bizarre but beloved cultural event called the Eurovision Song Contest. Although it is largely unknown in America, Eurovision has a worldwide following in the tens of millions who appreciate its cheesy pop songs and general celebration of kitsch.

The 54th annual Eurovision contest will take place on May 16 in Moscow. You can watch all the entries any time, or the live final, here on the official Web site. Or, for a quick overview of this year's contest, click here. (Feel free to skip the four pages of anti-American comments from outraged Norwegians.)

Eurovision fans realize the music is often terrible and so are the costumes and dancing, but love it anyway. For the uninitiated, here is a selection of five numbers that nicely demonstrate Eurovision's peculiar music and fashion sensibilities.

The NME awards are notorious for eccentric fashion choices, but none of them could compare to the outfit "created" by "music artist" La Roux. Wow.

Keira Knightley's smug expression is just begging us to judge this outfit that's somehow too small and too big at the same time.

We just have two questions: Why is Tilda Swinton wearing the human flesh dress made by serial killer Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs? And couldn't she at least have it tailored to fit her?

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, went pattern crazy while playing with the puppies at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Centre in Cornwall, UK.

Up-and-coming Australian actress Teresa Palmer is drop-dead gorgeous. The shiny hair, the bright, expressive eyes, the thin-but-not-scary-skinny body ... she seems to have the whole package. Except, maybe, for the whole dressing for the red carpet part.

    Getty Images

The thing is, we love the fit of this dress -- it's super flattering and classy. And Teresa shines in light colors, so the white and beige is beautiful. But seriously, what is the deal with the beige bra cups?

Should we get past the weird boob accessories since we love the rest of the look so much? Or are those a deal breaker?

    Getty Images

Of course Teresa isn't the only celeb who suffers from the occasional red carpet flop. Scarlett Johansson clearly has her off days.

Oversized gold coat, check. High waisted pants that are way more frumpy than fashionable, check. What the heck was Scarlett Johansson thinking when she wore this outfit to the photocall for The Spirit in Madrid? This outfit is old lady-ish, and not in the sometimes hip Mary-Kate Olsen kind of way.

    Getty Images

While watching the show we kept pausing the DVR and squinting at her outfit, trying to figure out how the shiny, bubblegum pink scarf thing fit in with the animal print, which was a different rosy tone. We also think the dress was a third shade of pink, but that turned out to be the least of her problems.

Beautiful Women, Bad Makeup

Most celebs wouldn't be caught dead bare-faced, but in some cases, they might have been better off. Isn't it a relief to know that even the most glamorous stars fall victim to makeup mistakes? From Drew Barrymore to J. Lo to Victoria Beckham, StyleList takes a look at Hollywood's biggest beauty blunders.

    Mike Marsland/WireImage

Salma Hayek. With her jet-black hair and hazel eyes, the striking Mexican-born actress doesn't need much more than a little here and a little there to play up her heritage. But layer on the costumey red lipstick, the silver shadow and the mile-long lashes, and the star looks like she's trying too hard be in an Art Nouveau poster.

    Tony Barson/WireImage

Katy Perry. OK, Katy, we know you're a girly-girl. But, honey, you're only 24, which means that now's the time to play up your fresh-faced sweetness. The too-blue shadow, bold black liner and overly-oranged cheeks age you. Even you look surprised.

    Mike Marsland/WireImage

Carla Brunei. This is the woman who swept the president of France off his feet? Though Carla Brunei's appeal is obvious with her soft, understated makeup, she looks like a wood elf when she takes the scrub-faced look to extremes. Aren't world-famous models supposed to know how to put on makeup?

    Anwar Hussein Collection/WireImage

Kylie Minogue. Though the Australian pop singer has churned through 1001 over-the-top costumes, she's at her best when she sticks to simple hair and natural makeup. Poufed, pulled and sporting green eyeshadow to match her Grecian gown, Kylie is, well, an Impossible Princess.

    James Devaney/WireImage

    Catherine Zeta-Jones
No one likes letting go of sun-kissed summer skin, but heaping on bronzer is never the answer. The Welsh beauty is at her best when she plays up her Snow White complexion.

    Dimitrios Kambouris, WireImage.com

Selma Blair. Though actress Salma Blair is a real style chameleon, she's at her best when she plays up her funky elegance. Swipe on deep plum shadow and dark orange lips, and the impish actress seems to be working overtime to prove she's not her disarrayed sitcom character, Kim Craig.

    Theo Wargo/WireImage.com

Kristen Bell. The Michigan-born actress has one of those, healthy mid-Western complexions that seems to need little more than sunshine and a bit of lip gloss to glow. But the star's green shadow and darker foundation makes her look like the rest of us city girls who spend too much time indoors.

    Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage

    Sienna Miller
Yikes! Does Ms. Miller own a mirror? From the looks of her orange lips and thickly penciled brows, the answer seems to be no. All Sienna needs to look camera-ready is some mascara, a touch of blush and pretty pink lips.

    Jon Furniss, WireImage.com

    Victoria Beckham
While Posh looks perfect with her sleek 'do and flawless face, her attempt to look ultra-sophisticated at this year's CFDA Awards backfired big time. Her severe up-do, too-red lips, shimmery shadow and blush overload makes her look like she could be David's mother, not his mate.

    Dimitrios Kambouris, WireImage.com

The next day we were looking through event photos and saw the entire outfit, in full glory. And it makes even less sense!

  • The scarf has some kind of geometric, almost art deco pattern in sequins, which is confusing with the animal print
  • The shoes are pretty, but too structured with all the flowy layers she has happening
  • The sheer hose are oddly heavy with her big, tanned expanse of cleavage
  • The bag is totally cute, but doesn't go with the shoes, and why is she carrying a giant bag on the red carpet? Isn't that what assistants are for?

We loved her hair and makeup, but there's so much going on here that we can't sort it all out. Slap a StyleFoul! sticker on it, we give up!

Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

With teams of stylists and access to the top designers, celebrities have a definite advantage when it comes to getting dressed. But when choosing the best outfit for their body types, even stars can make mistakes. Designer Bradley Bayou tells us when they got it right -- and wrong.

    Kevin Winter, Getty Images

    JESSICA SIMPSON: THE WRONG LOOK
This could possibly be Jessica's worst look ever. Her challenge is to keep her broad shoulders and wide hips balanced while defining her waist. To start, this cap-sleeved turtleneck adds weight to her upper body. The pants pockets offset the natural balance of her shape and the high-waist cuts her body in half.

    Rodrigo Marques, Splash News

    JESSICA SIMPSON: THE RIGHT LOOK
What a difference! With a belt defining her waist, the ruffled top and A-line skirt of this pretty dress keep Jessica's proportions balanced. Even her strappy shoes help elongate the vertical line of the body, making her seem taller and perfectly proportioned.

    James Devaney, WireImage.com

    JULIA ROBERTS: THE WRONG LOOK
This dress does nothing to broaden Julia's shoulders, which is necessary for triangle shapes to balance their shapely bottom halves. The straight shift cut doesn't define her waist, making her seem bottom-heavy and imbalanced.

    Lester Cohen, WireImage.com

    JULIA ROBERTS: THE RIGHT LOOK
The draping scooped neckline of this dress gives the appearance of broader shoulders and makes Julia's waist seem smaller by balancing her lower-body curves. The slightly flared skirt flows over her hips creating a long lean line.

    Dimitrios Kambouris, WireImage.com

    DEMI MOORE: THE WRONG LOOK
A waistband, like the one this dress, normally would define Demi's rectangular shape, but the excess fabric adds weight and hides her balanced shoulders and hips. The result? A shapeless silhouette.

    RAFA RIVAS, AFP/ Getty Images

    DEMI MOORE: THE RIGHT LOOK
The sweetheart neckline and cap sleeve on this fitted dress widens Demi's shoulders while the ruched skirt and princess line detailing add curves and give the appearance of a smaller waist. These two elements balance Demi's shape, achieving an hourglass silhouette.

    Giulio Marcocchi/Getty Images

    REESE WITHERSPOON: THE WRONG LOOK
Reese always looks great, and this gown is no exception. However the shade is a little too close to her skin tone. A bit more color would really make her glow!

    Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

    REESE WITHERSPOON: THE RIGHT LOOK
This simple sheath looks stunning on Reese's petite frame, and the color perfectly highlights her skin and hair. The fitted bodice and subtle, braided belt define her tiny waist without distracting from the dress' clean line, and her bright red shoes are the perfect playful touch.

    SGranitz Wireimage.com

    JENNIFER LOPEZ: THE WRONG LOOK
This dress is ill-fitting at the hips and the shiny fabric picks up light -- both factors that accentuate Jennifer's wider bottom half. The unstructured top does nothing to create a strong shoulder line, which would balance her silhouette.

American Idol Makeup Artist Mezhgan's Tips for How to Wear Warm and Cool Colors - Make {me} gorgeous!

Filed under: Cosmetics, Skin Care, Beauty Tips

How to Wear Warm and Cool Colors

People always get intimidated by the task of choosing colors, and ask Mezhgan for advice on what will work well on their skin tone. The good news is that anybody can wear any color, as long as it's balanced. You might not have picked that bright eye shadow for our lovely model India, but it looks great on her because the rest of her make up goes with it. The important thing is to make sure that the colors are in harmony with each other -- not working against each other!

    Model: India De Beaufort

    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
Get the products: me by (me)zhgan

So note to self: if you go with blue shadow, then skip the peach cheeks with red lips. As you can see, even on someone as beautiful as India, when there is too much going on it's distracting!

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography.com
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan

Here is India with a scrubbed face. You can see that she has naturally warm undertones -- and she will look great in warm or cool tones!

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography.com
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
Get the products: me by (me)zhgan

Here are some tips that can help narrow it down:
If you have a warm skin tone warm earthy tones, like the shades pictured here, are going to be more natural on your skin. If you wanted more of a pop you would use cooler colors on the color spectrum, which will contrast against the warmth of your skin and stand out a bit more.

    Model: India De Beaufort

Warm tones on India's naturally warm coloring give her a subtle, but still polished look.

You can see how cool tones work just as well on India, but pop in a different way. And it works the opposite way for people with cooler undertones (meaning more red in your skin) -- earthy tones are actually going to be more of a dramatic look on you because they will contrast against the coolness of your skin tone.

American Idol Makeup Artist Mezhgan's Tips for Natural Looking Makeup - Make {me} gorgeous!

Mezhgans No Makeup Look

Mezhgan's philosophy is that the goal of wearing makeup is to get compliments on how pretty you look, not how good your makeup looks. This week she has some tips to help you look stunning without looking like you're wearing a lot of makeup, like our beautiful model India De Beaufort.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan

    Start With A Great Canvas
Most importantly you want to have a great canvas to start from. This is where your foundation comes in. Mezhgan recommends using a liquid foundation over a primer because it makes it go on smoother and last a bit longer.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan

Get the look with luminous (me) primer and foundation.

Apply Foundation for an Even Tone
You want to use your liquid foundation to even out your skin tone, not necessarily cover any flaws. This is where so many people go wrong!

    Concealer for Extra Coverage
Use a concealer to take care of anything that needs a little extra covering up, like blemishes or dark circles.

    Model: India De Beaufort
    Photographer: zaazphotography
    Makeup artist: Mezhgan
    Products: me by (me)zhgan
Get the look with flawless (me) concealer and perfecting powder.

    Powder Sets the Canvas
Set your make up by gently brushing on translucent powder, which won't alter the color of your foundation. This method leaves you looking flawless and gives you coverage where you need it when you need it instead of all over.

    Model: India De Beaufort

Get the look with flawless (me) concealer and perfecting powder.

    A Bit of Blush
Next dust a bit of a subtle blush color starting at the apples of your cheeks and sweeping through the hairline. Be careful not to go too far in on the face close to the nose. It will look unnatural. You can also mix a highlighter along the top of your cheek to give a subtle glow.

    Brighten Your Eyes

    Subtly Define Your Eyes

    Enhance With Mascara

Michelle Obama Inauguration Predictions

If expectations are high for Barack Obama, they're no less soaring for his wife -- at least in a sartorial sense. After two decades of Bush and Clinton women -- for whom style was not a sixth sense -- the inarguably fashionable and seemingly fearless Michelle Obama has trend-watchers in a frenzy. Tall and taut, with the broad shoulders and self-confidence to carry off whatever she wants, Obama has spent the past 21 months being compared to Jacqueline Kennedy. And, so far, Obama has acquitted herself well, showing off recession-friendly dresses from White House/ Black Market and pricey styles from edgy designers like Isabel Toledo, who she wore (left) last spring to a fundraiser with fashion industry heavyweights. What will she favor for the White House? StyleList takes a look at her past -- and offers some predictions for the future. And for those who think clothes don't matter, remember the words of JFK as he introduced his wildly popular wife at a 1961 State Dinner at Charles de Gaulle's presidential palace. "I am the man," Kennedy said, "who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris."

She hasn't even gotten to the White House, but Michelle Obama has already done more than any fashion mag to make Thakoon a household name. The Thai-born designer's dresses were perfect for several major moments on the campaign trail, including (at left) the final night of the Democratic National Convention. At right, the rose-colored silk dress as it appeared on Thakoon's runway. Mrs. Obama seems to have made no changes to it -- except the addition of three her trademark pins to the neckline. (And for those who can't afford Thakoon's four-figure price tags, the designer debuts a more recession-friendly collection at Target in December.)

No, we don't expect the new First Lady to parade her abs at the Easter egg roll. But with just a few strategically placed swaths of fabric, this delicate floral sheath by Thakoon could meet the needs of the most demanding East Wing schedule.

Back in 1982, when Nancy Reagan wore rhinestone-trimmed knickers to a dinner at the American Embassy in Paris, she was ridiculed across two continents. So it's no surprise that Michelle Obama decided to keep her thighs safely away from the runway version of Moschino's flowered silk shorts (right). What's a First Lady-wannabe to do? Moschino took the same gray-and-purple fabric and used it to bare Mrs. O's knee's in a more Donna Reed way -- a soft shirtwaist that made her look both comfortable and camera-ready for the debut of the Obama-Biden ticket in Springfield, Ill. last summer. Surely, Nancy would have approved.

This purple silk coat and carnival-striped dress from Moschino's spring collection strikes the perfect balance between the White House need to look sophisticated and Mrs. Obama's penchant to shake-it-up.

If fashion tells a story, Michelle Obama's fiery red confetti-printed dress conveyed every bit of her Election Night euphoria. True, the Narciso Rodriguez sheath, modified from the runway version at right, earned as many barbs as raves -- "Maybe it looked really awesome up close?" one fashion wag asked. But you won't find a trace of disappointment on Obama's face, which glowed as brightly as her $10,275 Loree Rodkin diamond earrings.

Narcisco Rodriguez's edgy black-and-white dress would be techy enough for the You Tube generation and graphic enough for those Dinosaur Age readers of print media.

    Chris Moore/Catwalking/Getty Images

Tall and toned, Mrs. Obama isn't afraid to experiment. She plays with color (usually favoring brights) and shape (usually body-hugging) -- and, just when you think you've figured out her fashion maxims, she veers in another direction. The cantaloupe-colored Moschino dress that she wore to her husband's acceptance of the Harold Washington Award this fall was a softer color and silhouette than her typical fare.

Hillary Clinton made front-page news in 1993, when she co-hosted the Governors' Dinner at the White House in Donna Karan's "cold-shoulder" dress, a dramatic long-sleeved black sheath with -- surpise! -- the shoulders cut out. We're not sure the world is ready for a First Lady in a cut-out torso, but with a bit of fabric in all the right places, Narciso Rodriguez's 'bondage" gown would be a fierce addition to Mrs. Obama's don't-mess-with-me repertoire.

Peter Soronen's fashions are fun, flirty, and fit for a woman confident enough to show off her curves. Small wonder he's earned red-carpet time from the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Hudson and Tina Fey. He's also added Michelle Obama to his roster. At left, her white delicately-patterned dress is adapted from Soronen's houndstooth check sheath.

Clay Aiken is gay! Act surprised!

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Surprise!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we proudly introduce: Gay Claiken!

According to Clay's exclusive interview in People Magazine, it was becoming a father that inspired him to come out of the plexiglass closet:

"I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things."

Good for you, Clay. We're all going to act surprised for a minute and we're all going to show our support, but then we have stuff to do, mmkay?

We do not mean to undermine anyone's individual personal struggle, but this is like when Elton John came out except...well, now we live in a world where Elton John came out a hecka long time ago.

And what about the baby mama? Jaymes Foster executive produced Aiken's last three albums, four if you count the baby, Parker Foster Aiken. Was she at all confused by this news? According to The Associated Press, Clay came out to his family four years ago. What gives? The Next Best Thing, anyone?

Well, if that's the case, we think that's sorta sweet. Congratulations, Clay and family!

I want that! Jordin Sparks Shizue clutch

American Idol Jordin was all "sparks" (haha, get it?) at the BET Awards where she was adorned by new Hollywood boutique Shizue with a ring, necklace, and handmade clutch.

Though we're sure all of her bling was "borrowed," she still looked damn good in it. So good in fact, we might consider snagging a clutch or two for ourselves.

From Red Carpet to Your Closet: Cat Deeley at the American Idol finale

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Get the Look

We happily admit to a So You Think You Can Dance addiction, partly due to the amazing dancing, but also because we're always dying to know what host Cat Deeley will be wearing. She's at least eight feet tall, and quite thin, so obviously, she can wear just about anything. Still, she occasionally chooses outfits that make us wonder if maybe British fashion is like the British sense of humor -- rather different than American, but enjoyable once you "get it."

This outfit from the American Idol finale is something that we absolutely, completely get. True, it works for her largely because of her height and slim build, but it's one of our favorite jumpsuits this year, and even if you don't get it as a jumpsuit, this is a look that you could absolutely rock at a party. Check out the gallery to see how.
