Anthropologie battement necklaceIndulging your inner ballerina fantasies by wearing a tutu is a little over-the-top. (Just ask Lara Flynn Boyle or Lindsay Lohan, both of whom were cited by the fashion police for attempting to pull off the look after the age of six.)

Must-have dresses - Mazzola Sweater Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

We love this cozy cotton and angora sweater dress by Mazzola - the slim cable knit is flattering and the slight ruffle detail at the hem is absolutely lovely. It's a great layering piece that can be jazzed up with a scarf, a colorful belt or bold jewelry. We plan on spending all winter in this.

Haute home decorating - Where to spend and where to save

If you're looking to give your home a bit of an update, it's easy to look in showrooms and catalogs and decide you want it all. Paying for it all, however, is a little more difficult for most of us.

Why aren't you wearing this? Paper Route Hat

When you wake up and don't feel like putting too much effort into your hair, what's your go-to? Do you pull it into a ponytail? Braid it down the back? Throw on a baseball cap, and call it a day? These options are all just fine, but we'd like to see you incorporate a hat like this Paper Route Hat ($38 at Anthropologie) into your routine.

This gives you a much more fashion-forward look than a baseball cap while providing the same benefits -- covering up undone hair. You can wear it down, straight or in waves, or pull it back into a low pony -- even a side pony, if you're so inclined.

Shoes of the day - Anthropologie "boardroom" heels

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

We're not sure why these are called "boardroom" heels, but we certainly love the way these shoes are as curvaceous as can be - they're sexy and we're pretty sure we can walk in them. Now that is quite an accomplishment!

The charm of these shoes is, of course, their aggressive femininity but there's just something about them that makes us imagine them on the feet of someone who is intelligent and maybe just a bit quirky as well as girly. In mock-croc peach leather with grey piping, we dare you to pair these with a sensible grey pantsuit, a la Elle Woods!

Tocca candles. No, wait, dresses?

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Dresses, Kids and Babies

Tocca candles are well known and loved, especially Stella, the irresistible blood orange flavor. But did you realize the brand also sells two clothing lines -- RTW for women, and Bambini for children? They have a very Anthropologie vibe, with natural fibers and pretty, precise details.

The clothes are mainly dresses, which mostly remind us of an updated Mad Men wardrobe. And even though there are fewer than 30 items from which to choose, there is surprisingly good variety, with style for almost every shape.

Oh, and they're pricey, putting them category of casual/dressy party outfit you wear to a daytime time wedding where you're going to see an ex-boyfriend and his new fiancé.

Pretty dresses galore in the gallery.

Why aren't you wearing this? Lombardy Cap

Filed under: Accessories, Hair Care, Must Haves

We remember being in school and getting in trouble for wearing hats. "But, sir," we'd politely say to the principal, "it's not a baseball cap -- it's a fashion statement." Plus we were having a bad hair day.

Principals don't always care about fashion statements, or bad hair days, for that matter. But we do, and we've spent the last several years making up for all those day we couldn't wear hats in school by wearing them everywhere else.

Why aren't you wearing this? Four-In-Hand Belt

Belts can do so much more than just help hold your pants up. They can bring colors and patterns to an outfit. They can create a waist in a dress or long shirt where there was previously shapelessness. They can take an ensemble from ho-hum to Hell, Yeah!

Dress of the Day: Thisbe Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

anthropologie thicbe dressYep, this week we are sticking with the empire waistline because we're pretty sure that the New Year's Resolution "diet" hasn't quite kicked in yet for you, and there's no reason you have to look a little less than impressive just because your waistline is slow to catch up (or down, as the case may be).

Anthropologie's Thisbe Dress is perfect for this January day. The dress is made of a navy blue wool jersey material with a charmeuse trim. The deep V-neckline plunges to waistline that releases into a cascade of pleats and falls to a sweet 36". The sleeves are the most charming part of the dress, slightly puffed, gathered, and ending in a tiny ruffle.

The dress is $328.

Take an afternoon nap in style

Filed under: Haute Home, Stores We Love, Style in the News

I'd might as well come right out and confess that I love and am obsessed with Anthropologie.com. Their perfect mix of trendy and vintage-inspired clothing, accessories, and household wares gets me every time.

My latest obsession at Anthropologie is this couch. Dubbed the "Milo Chesterfield", the black and white couch is upholstered in a canvas Marimekko print, made with a cotton and wood construction, and features cute, vintage-y details such as fabric-covered buttons placed perfectly in the center of little tufted squares.

With it's classic, English curved back and crisp, contemporary fabrication, the couch would be a perfect compliment to nearly any home. If you're a modern decorator, the couch will blend right in with your trendy style, and if you prefer a more reserved look, the couch could serve as a really fun accent piece. And that's why I always fall for Anthropologie - they design for everyone!

The couch can be found at (can you guess?) Anthropologie.com, and is priced at $3998.

Dress of the Day: Cowl neck sweater dress

anthropologie cowl neck sweater dressSince it is now officially sweater weather, you can either throw a sweater on over your little dress, or wear a sweater dress.

In black, this little sweater dress from Anthropologie for $168 is a perfect basic piece for a wardrobe. I have always found the draping of cowl necks to be sexy, somewhat slimming, and of course, comfortable. Without any accessories, the dress is easily a daytime dress (but really, who doesn't wear accessories?!?!), but with a few sparkly things added, the dress can go straight to the cocktail hour. I mean, that neckline is just screaming for a necklace!

Nightgowns as dresses

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Clothing, Swimwear and Lingerie

In yesterday's New York Times Style section, Ellen Tien noted the revival of a recurring fashion trend: underwear as outerwear. But instead of, say, wearing a camisole as a top (so last fall!) or sporting a bustier under a jacket (so Madonna in 1989), this look takes a nightgown and makes it into a sundress.

This will sound a little risque at first -- especially if when you think of "nightgown" you envision Joan Collins in Dynasty. However, the chemise nighties at stores like Anthropologie could plausibly pass as regular summer sundresses. My favorite is the Orion nightgown, which has mother of pearl buttons on the placket of the empire-waisted "dress". In a chocolate brown cotton voile, this nightgown-turned-daygown could easily make the transition into fall when matched with a pair of boots and a feminine cardigan.
