Tip of the day: Be artsy fartsy

Filed under: Style in the News, Style Tip of the Day

We've all seen the art inspired abstract prints that are a key trend this summer. What we bet you didn't know was that the look is also an easy DIY project. Instead of shelling out a cool thousand for a D & G dress, why not do one just as fabulous yourself?

Here's what to arm yourself with:

Tip of the day: Tiered skirts

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Style Tip of the Day

Zac Posen
Let's play a little game. When we say "tiered skirt", what's the first thing that comes to mind? Hippies? Flower power? Prairies? We're about to erase that perception from your mind. No, not by our mind boggling Tom Cruise like super powers (you wish!). It's far simpler than that. We're going to introduce you to the flirty skirts present at the Luella, Givenchy, and Zac Posen spring/summer 2008 runways.

Tip of the day: Critique Art sans Degree

Filed under: Style Tip of the Day

Remember this painting: Impression Sunrise by Claude MonetMany of us want to become more cultured but we are clueless how to start. How about with art? After taking a handful of art history classes and reading "Art for Dummies," we've realized that, though we are far from being experts, we have enough know how to help you get your critique on without, what do they call that thing again? Oh right, a doctorate.

Charity campaigner taken to court by Louis Vuitton

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style for a Cause

Every the most ardent fashionista will surely admit that there are some things which are - yes! - more important than the latest designer bag, Paris Hilton's newest business venture or what the stars are wearing to another black tie event. Nadia Plesner certainly thinks so: the 26-year old artist from Holland has created a series of striking posters to highlight the tragedy of the ongoing genocide in Darfur (in which so far 200,000-400,000 people have died -- and 2.5 million have been displaced from their homes).

To mark the contrast between the suffering of the people of Darfur and our love of celebrity style and gossip, she drew a starving African child holding a chihuahua dog and a purse which looks similar to something LV would make.

Blood is the New Black: T-shirts

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Men

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

There will be blood, and possibly some sweat (not shop!) and tears. These t-shirts from Blood is the New Black are yet another example of wearable art where couture is the canvas. What's great about Blood is the New Black is how they give equal time to both the art and the artist, which we like.

Indie Designer Interviews: Claudine Hellmuth

I'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with Claudine Hellmuth, a nationally recognized collage artist, author and illustrator. She creates quirky, retro-inspired mixed media collages, including custom commissioned artworks.

Tell me a little about your work. I am an artist, author and illustrator. I create custom artworks for clients using their photos of themselves, their kids and their pets. I weave them into a collage artwork. I would say my look is whimsical with a retro twist. I have also written a couple books about my techniques and filmed 3 DVD workshops. And I create illustrations for various companies for greeting cards, calendars and advertisements etc.

How did you get started as an artist? I have been an artist all my life. I went to art college and graduated with my BFA in fine Art in 1997. After I graduated I knew I had to get some sort of day job and the internet was just really starting out then, so I learned HTML and got a job designing web sites. I did that to pay the bills meanwhile building my art career on the side in the evenings and on weekends. I got laid off from my web job in 2001 and have been working for myself ever since! I was actually so worn out from working both my day job and for my art that by the time I got laid off I was relieved!

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves?
beauty: bare minerals make up and my proactiv system!
fashion: a great pair of jeans!!

Indie Designer Interviews: The Pear Project

Filed under: Haute Home, Stores We Love, Style in the News, Interviews

I'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with Brooke Fuller who runs an online boutique stocked full of great original handmade goods from other independent designers.

Tell me a little about yourself and your shop.
I am a busy woman! I run a shop at The Pear Project that focuses on artisan goods in everyday life along with a blog at thepearproject.blogspot.com under the same theme. At The Pear Project I carry handpicked goods from a variety of artists focusing on modern handmade items that can enhance everyday life. I have a love of sales, advertising and marketing that fits in well with running this shop.

I also am a trained photographer. I have a commercial portfolio, but most of my practical experience has been with portraits. I love Polaroids and spend a lot of time thinking of how I can transform my photography into more than prints on the wall. I have a popular series of sx-70 manipulations I did when that type of film was available along with a series of resin necklaces. I have also used my photography for inspiration in other mediums as well.

Felting is another passion of mine. I am currently working on a series of 4x4 wall pieces with theme of simplicity inspired by nature & a line of brightly colored felted bracelets that will include the actual bracelets along with a kit for those who would rather do it themselves. I enjoy dry needle felting and use it as a sculpting medium. The texture draws me in and I am always amazed at the finished product.

I also work with enamel, resin, paper & a few other mediums. Variety is the spice of life, and I don't think I will ever be able to specialize in just 1 thing!

Who are your favorite designers? This is an easy question because I carry many of my favorite designers in The Pear Project shop. To name a few off hand ... I adore the paper products from Papered Together. I can't even count the number of times I have given out the coasters we carry in the shop as an affordable, unique gift. They are just perfect! I also love to give salt shakers by Gamiworks too.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I love mineral make-up! It gives a great natural look while evening out my skin tone. I also have a bag and purse habit.

Change your wallet as often as you change your purse

Currently, I'm on the hunt for a wallet and the wallets of Poketo caught my eye since I'm looking for something a bit more "out there" than your standard Coach wallet (fetching though they are).

Poketo wallets are all created by artists and have different patterns on the front and the inside. The website includes the bio of each artist. Each wallet is made of vinyl and has three slots for credit cards, a bill slot and a change pocket. They are a bit large ( 8" x 4") but are meant to be folded into a 4" x 4" square. They seem better suited for back pockets than purses. The wallets sells for $20. But if you are daring you can opt for the secret bag of wallets option. You get four wallets for $50 but you don't get to pick the patterns.

Fueling my disaster obsession in style

I've always had a bit of an obsession with disaster movies and theories on the end of the world. Young artist Paul Coors must share a similar problem.

The Cincinnati-based artist has created two intricate black and white Catastrophe prints which adorn both sides of a soft cotton tunic. The shirt depicts two intricate scenes of destruction which are very compelling. The tunic sells for $36 and is just one of the creative items from The Age of Mechanical Reproduction, a Philadelphia company that sells T-shirts and prints and totes emblazoned with startling works of art from talented artists around the country.
