Avril Lavigne hates, er, loves her new clothing collection

We don't get Avril Lavigne. She's bashing Christina Aguilera one day and rocking Xtina's platinum blonde hair extensions the next. But more curiously, we don't understand why she thinks anyone would be willing to dress like her.

Now women can smell like Antonio Banderas

Filed under: Fragrance, Celebrities with Style

Move over fragrance experts with your fancy Italian names, it seems that people can't get enough of fragrances by Queen Latifah, Avril Lavigne, Derek Jeter, and eve Tim McGraw. Antonio Banderas has apparently been such a successful name in the fragrance business, that he's teamed up with Puig Beauty USA to debut his first fragrance for women called Blue Seduction. We were pretty surprised to find that this will be the 5th fragrance to bear the Banderas name.

According to market analysts, celebrity fragrances are the hottest way to merge mass with class -- and Antonio Banderas' image is a near perfect sales rep. Antonio's Latin lover persona is apparently something that dudes want to emulate and women want to get with. If his success with men's cologne is any indicator, Blue Seduction should be a top 10 seller and the big chain stores. We remember when Michael Jordan's fragrance debuted in the 90's, it seemed really confusing and not so classy. We thought: who wants to smell like sweat and Gatorade? We were wrong.

When Hot Topic isn't punk rawk enough

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Department store chain Kohl's has just signed Avril Lavigne to develop a new line for Juniors called "Abbey Dawn", Women's Wear Daily reports. The line will be in stores just in time for Back-To-School (Oh thank God!!!!). The line will feature jewelry and clothing, with more products to come, and pieces will range from $24-48. WWD says we can expect "authentic rock 'n' roll attitude with a feminine edge," which is a concept SO new and different that no one else has thought of it. Ever.

Please, people. Avril has ridiculous style without professional help, and not in a cool M.I.A. way. In an Elton John way. In a Bjork-as-a-swan way. Designers need to be designers, rock stars need to be rock stars and rarely the twain shall meet.

Avril's Maxim cover: Does she pull it off?

Those of you into the pseudo-punk, kinda goth, grunge girl look are in for a treat next month. Avril Lavigne, the pop-rock icon, is adorning the March cover of Maxim magazine.

It takes a lot to look decent on the cover a men's mag -- which is surprising, because most guys are only interested in seeing two things (or three, I guess, depending on how you're counting). You need just the right combination of sexy, trashy, and at least somewhat approachable to entice the average Joe to pick you up off the magazine rack.

So does Avril pull it off? She sticks with her traditional black eyeliner to help maintain her cred, and the frilly pink thing-a-ma-gigger she's using to cover up certainly works in her favor. All in all, I'd vote yes.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say she looks better than normal. The half grunge, half glamorous look she's been trying recently looks like a copy of a copy of a crappy version of Christina Aguilera -- only trashier. At least in the Maxim shoot she manages to look like a grown-up (and a pretty sexy one at that).

What do you think?

Does Avril Lavigne pull off the Maxim look?

Kiss and smell

Filed under: Men, Fragrance, Celebrities with Style

I know what you're thinking, why would KISS smell any better than Avril Lavigne? That's a good question and one that I can't readily answer.

In all fairness I've never actually smelled any of them in person, but I do have a bottle of KISS for Him, the him being me, and it actually smells pretty good.

I thought the gift had been a joke. My youth was spent in a shrine to the make-up wearing rockers. If KISS made it, I had it.

Of course that stopped long before they started selling coffee, condoms and caskets- and that's just the "C's," so I laughed when I saw what my wife had bought me.

She wasn't laughing. She also isn't a KISS fan, despite me forcing her to sit through hours of scratched up records, or perhaps because of that. I don't know.

The point is that the fragrance, available for men and women, is actually quite pleasant. I've had numerous compliments on the scent, and most of them weren't from the guy at Hot Topic.

If you are in the market to smell like a rock star you could do a lot worse.

Avril Lavigne: Eau de sk8er

Filed under: Fragrance, Skin Care, Celebrities with Style

When I think of Avril Lavigne, which I don't, there are several things that would most likely come to mind, but the one thing that I'm very sure of is that I would never assume that she smells good.

Sweat, cheap liquor, bad grammar, cigarettes? Sure. However, none of those lend themselves to the olfactory industry.

Lavigne has plans to join a growing list of celebrities that have their own fragrance line and according to sources has applied for a patent to market "fragrances and perfumery, aftershave, pre-shave, bath oil, bath soap, shower gel, body shampoo, deodorant for personal use, tissues impregnated with cosmetic lotions, bath crystals, bath milks, dusting powder, body lotion, body splash, body cream, hand lotion and talc."

Sk8er bois and girlfriends everywhere, rejoice! Your time to smell is now!

Stylefoul: Avril Lavigne's New Year's Eve getup

Filed under: Hair Care, Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

All right, perhaps it's a bit unfair to call Avril Lavigne's New Year's Eve outfit a "getup" because it seems to be what she's wearing these days. I'm not sure what kind of look she was going for, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't meant to be "Hot Topic clearance rack." Or maybe it was. I don't entirely know what to think anymore.

Note Lavigne's chunky streaks, oversized false lashes, wrinkled graphic shirt, bright pink nails, tiny plaid skirt, belt worn askew, skull-embellished Doc Martens, and thick checkerboard shoelaces. Now, let's take a moment to breathe and then hold out our arms to Lavigne in a unified expression of "What in the hell were you thinking?!?!"

Aldo's anti-AIDS tote

Filed under: Holiday Style, Handbags, Stores We Love, Accessories, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Style for a Cause

Aldo, the shoe and purse retailer best known for chic styles and inexpensive prices, is doing charity right. In honor of World AIDS Day (December 1, officially) Aldo unveiled a new tote bag, especially designed for the cause by a host of well-known celebrities and musicians.

However, instead of using celebrity power to raise the price of the tote through the roof, donating a paltry amount to the charity, and pocketing the rest, Aldo is selling the anti-AIDS tote for $5.00 and 100% of the proceeds go to YouthAIDS. Since the initial launch of the Aldo fights AIDS campaign a year ago, the company has raised over 2.8 million dollars for the cause.

Featuring photographs shot by Peter Lindbergh, the tote is covered in back and white photos of the participating celebrity supporters and designers, including Adrien Brody, Avril Lavigne, Brittany Murphy, Dave Navarro, Eva Mendes, John Mayer, Wynonna Judd, and Ziggy Marley.
