Diane Von Furstenburg "Surfs the Tsunami"

Filed under: Events: On the Scene, Celebrities with Style

diane von furstenbergWhen fashion designers and journalists meet at a catered party, guess who are the only ones eating?

Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) president Diane Von Furstenberg charmed the crowd at Rockefeller Center Monday night for the announcement of nominees and honorees for its 2009 awards. One of the most popular and effective presidents in the CFDA's distinguished history, she did not hesitate to address the elephant in the room, a certain gaudy party-crasher known as "the recession."

Michelle Williams in Chloe - I Want That!

michelle williams

Pixie-like actress Michelle Williams looked supremely adorable at the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica. We worship Michelle for her French chic aesthetic. It's almost always a black or white shoe (preferably pump) with a sassy little show-stealing frock.

Cameron Diaz in Michael Kors - I Want That!

Staying true to her sporty spirit, Cameron Diaz looks head to toe adorable in this stripped dress at the 2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Not to mention she's right on trend. Stars, stripes and good, old red, white, and blue will be summer staples this year. Maybe it's because of the refreshing American pride our new President is instilling in us or maybe it's just because that's the way the fashion cookie crumbles. Regardless, this easy summer dress will be one of our summer goes to's paired with wedges for a BBQ, black heels for a hot date, and flats for all those summer baby and bridal showers we've been suckered into.

Golden Globes Make-up Trends

Filed under: Cosmetics, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends, Beauty Tips

Freida PintoThis year brought some big changes in red carpet makeup -- namely, a serious lack of it. We've gotten so used to the heavy, dark, smoky eyes and bold red lips on even the youngest of actresses that seeing anything less is ... well, a little shocking. But, at the same time, completely refreshing.

Emmy's 2008 - What we hope they wear

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

(Click the photo to see more of our picks!)

Some people have expectations about who should win certain awards at the Emmy's. We, on the other hand, have certain expectations regarding dresses.

Come on, you do too -- haven't you ever watched the red carpet and thought, "Gee, that dress is okay, but I'd love to see her in this"? We think that all the time, so we've tried a few dresses on some of our favorite nominees to see how they fit. It's not necessarily that we don't like what they wore last year, but let's just say we have high hopes for this Sunday!

Michael Buckner is a fashion and celebrity photographer who travels around the world taking pictures on the red carpet. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the hottest entertainment industry events.

I worked on the yellow carpet for video game sensation Rock Band while the Universal Studios back lot burnt down. It took two hours to get to press check-in. I was on a stage at the very end of the carpet with some skilled video-game designers who have a knack for virtual rocking. From Stone Temple Pilots to Queens of the Stone Age, these guys knew every four-button combo of every song.

Being at the end of the carpet, most didn't want to stop, let alone play a three minute karaoke version of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." I got some good talent nonetheless: Carson Daly, Cisco Adler, the Pussycat Dolls, Tila Tequila and so many others.

Designer of the year nominees are out!

Filed under: Style in the News

The Council of Fashion Designers of America have announced their nominees for designer of the year! For menswear designer of the year Michael Bastian, Thom Browne, and Tom Ford are nominated. Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors are all up for the accessory category. And for the biggie, the womenswear category, we have Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler, and Marc Jacobs.

I'll admit that I was totally shocked to see Marc Jacobs on the list. Just to put it simply, nobody really liked his Spring/Summer '08 collection. Check out what I had to say about Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton here. I really felt like he lost his magic touch this year. His mojo, if you will, is gone. But apparently the CFDA disagrees, and well, we all know who has more influence in the fashion industry. Me, obviously.

And I'll tell you who I'd like to see win -- Francisco Costa. He's an Ashley Olsen fave and I love him too. This year he kept the lines and designs of his clothing really simple and the result was gorgeous. His collection was fantastic. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) Francisco just won last year, so I doubt that they'll give the big award to him again.

Also up for grabs is the Swarovski Award. This is given to a designer who shows a lot of promise. It's basically a scholarship paid out in the form of cash and Swarovski crystals. For womenswear we have Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte, Thakoon Panichgul, and Alexander Wang and in the menswear category Patrik Ervell, Tim Hamilton, and Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders are duking it out.

Browse through the gallery to see the designers' work and tell me who you think should win in each category!

From red carpet to your closet: Anne Hathaway at the 2008 Oscars

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style, Red Carpet Trends

Anne Hathaway showed up at the 2008 Academy Awards in two of the night's hottest trends -- a bright red dress and a one-shoulder neckline.

You might be thinking, "Sure, she looked great, but what does that have to do with me? I don't foresee a red carpet in my future," but you're missing a big fashion point. Red carpet fashion doesn't only dictate, well, red carpet fashion -- the trends we see on at the Academy Awards have an impact on all fashion.

So how can you rock Anne's red hot style? Let me tell you!

Why have a red carpet? The country NEEDS it!

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

You're here at StyleDash, so I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you at least care about fashion. Well, it turns out you're a good person for caring. That's right. Not shallow, but good, and here's why:

The lack of red carpet events is hurting our economy.

Think about it -- Jennifer Lopez wears the infamous green Versace dress on the red carpet to the 2000 Grammys. Millions of people saw it when she wore it there, and millions more saw it after the fact. Prom dresses, wedding dresses, formalwear, and clubwear are all modeled after this design. Not only does Versace make a buck, but so does everyone else involved in all those other industries.

From red carpet to your closet: Tina Fey at the 2008 SAG Awards

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

Tina Fey rocked the SAG Awards in more ways than one -- she not only looked hot on the red carpet, but she also took home an award. I'll let you decide which is more important. You can probably guess what I think.

A little black dress is generally a pretty safe bet, and not a bad choice for Tina -- she's one hell of a talent, but hasn't quite reached style icon status yet. However, I love that she took some risks with it, which is something many of us can do with the clothes already in our closets. Here's how:

From red carpet to your closet: Eva Longoria Parker at the 2008 SAG Awards

Filed under: Clothing, Celebrities with Style

We know Eva Longoria Parker is gorgeous -- but does she have to flaunt it?

Why, yes. Yes, she does.

Eva made a real splash at the 2008 SAG awards in this Naeem Kahn cowl-neck gown. And while she's contorted herself into a seriously unnatural pose for this picture, trust me when I say that it was still a beautiful gown when she stood like someone who might not be a part-time contortionist. This modern take on old-school Hollywood glamor can work for you, too, even if you don't have a red carpet event on your calendar. Here's how:

How to spark pregnancy rumors: Angelina Jolie

Filed under: Vintage and Retro, Celebrities with Style

Just in case you were bored and wanted people to start whispering, "Is she preggers?" I'm offering you a perfect way to get said rumor started, courtesy of Angelina Jolie.

Angie and partner Brad Pitt showed up at this year's SAG awards looking, well ... nice, but rather expect-y. You'll notice I'm not saying expecting, because there's no bigger gaff than to say a woman is expecting when she's not. Seriously. But, the rumors, they are a-flyin', and Angelina seems to be playing them up from her amplified bustline to her non-existent waistline.

Why does this dress play to the preggers rumors? Let me tell you:

StyleFoul: Imogen Heap, the only interesting sight at the Grammys

Filed under: Celebrities with Style, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

imogen heapThere was a lot of gray and silver, black and boring on the Grammy red carpet last night. Justin Timberlake wore a gray Prada suit, Fergie wore a Badgley Mischka silver minidress, Vanessa Minnillo also went silver and short, the Dixie Chicks wore basic black as did Scarlett Johansson. Everyone kept their breasts discreetly covered. Isn't the Grammy ceremony supposed to be the one time that everyone gets to wear their more outrageous outfits?

One person did. The always entertaining Imogen Heap sported this unique creation. She found her designer through MySpace. Is it a Stylefoul? Oh probably but if anyone could pull off the geisha-meets-lily-pond look it is her and at least she decided to dress like a creative person which is more than can be said for most of the crowd. Classic glamour has its place (Oscar night for instance) but on Grammy night I like to see a little more flesh and flash.
