Dress of the Day: Fighting Eel "Aimee" Dress

fighting eel aimee dressOn a day that's wholly devoted to eating, you've got to be conscious of what you're wearing. While my go to outfit for this day is a terry-cloth tracksuit in all black because of its elastic waist, it's not always appropriate when you're entertaining guests for dinner (or if you are a guest at someone else's house). The best thing to do is to wear something comfortable that will allow your waist a little room to grow. FIghting Eel's Aimee Dress is a soft, stretch jersey dress in a babydoll shape which, other than a trapeze-style dress, is probably the best type of dress to wear. The material is largely spandex, so it will stretch, and the three-quarter length sleeves mean you won't accidentally "dip" it in the gravy on your plate when you're reaching across the table for a second helping.

Available at Queen Bee Clothing, on sale for $115.50 from $165.

Dress of the Day: What Goes Around Comes Around

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

what goes around comes aroundKarma.

Or, in the case of dresses, it's post-modern, vintage styles from What Goes Around Comes Around.

Peony Pristine is a cream linen sundress that takes you back to your little girlish days (which these days, was probably yesterday) with its jumper shape, apron pockets with checkered print, and wooden beads. The grosgrain ribbon detail on the straps and pockets will remind you of tying your hair in pigtails (I recommend refraining from that now, though).

The dress is fully lined and falls 30". Yes, it's made of summery linen, which is why it's on sale at Active Endeavors for $126, down from a whopping $420.

Dress of the Day: Betsey Johnson Black Lace Babydoll

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

betsey johnson black lace pleated babydollIt's the season for babydolls, and since it is fashionable, don't be afraid to wear a babydoll to work. Trust me. There is nothing more comfortable for sitting eight hours behind a desk huddled over your keyboard -- unless you're in your pajamas working from home, that is.

Okay, so the Black Lace Pleated Babydoll by Betsey Johnson might be a little much for the office, but it certainly works for afterhours! The 100% polyester dress features a floral lace over a black satin bodice that has a deep V neck that crosses over at the bust. The empire waist, with a tie, lets out into pleated skirt that falls 17" from the natural waistline. Because it's so sweetly feminie, you could get away with adorable black satin ballet flats, but I think it truly calls for a pair of wicked black patent leather stiletto pumps.

Available from Bluefly for
$195 (retail $325).

five must haves for spring
You can't shop or surf the Internet these days without being reminded that yes, you should totally be shopping for Spring things, even though it might still feel like the Arctic. Get over it. You could use that excuse when it was February, but we've stepped into March, dolls. Spring officially starts this month and you can't be caught in the sunshine in a pair of cashmere leggings!

Look out for Styledash's Spring Essentials this week, because we may not be the Devil in Prada, but we definitely know what the hell we're talking about! Today, let's talk about the Five Must-Have Clothing Things for Spring.

Dress of the Day: Chloe Jersey Babydoll

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

chloe jersey babydoll dressIt's the last day of the week that we're going to worry about that abdomen of ours before we really get serious about those 100 crunches every day. No, seriously, we are going to get serious about working out now. For real.

But today, we're slipping into Chloe's eggshell-colored, fine jersey babydoll dress. The dress is sleeveless with a rcrew-neck, has pleating on bust and below the high waist-line that is wrapped with self-tie black cummerbund. You don't have to worry about its light color as the dress has a white lining underneath. Falling just above the knee, the dress is made for a pair of knee high boots.

Chloe Babydoll Dress available from Net-a-Porter, originally $925, now $555.

Dress of the Day: Lux Brush Ribbed Babydoll

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

urban outfitters lux brush ribbed babydollLet's not forget that yes indeed, it is winter in the northern hemisphere, even though all I'm doing is dreaming about a luxurious beach escape. To keep it real for the season, the Lux Brushed Ribbed Babydoll Dress at Urban Outfitters is just the thing. The dress features a neckline that scoops into a ribbed top and slightly puffed ¾-length sleeves with a rib-knit cuff. Made of a polyester and rayon blend fabric, it's comfortbale to wear and care. The belt is not included, and I would probably not go with a tomato red -- black is more my thing, particularly since I'd be pairing this dress with a pair of black, flat heeled knee-high boots.

The dress is $48 at Urban Outfitters, and comes in charcoal (shown), teal, and nutmeg.

Dress of the Day: Thisbe Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

anthropologie thicbe dressYep, this week we are sticking with the empire waistline because we're pretty sure that the New Year's Resolution "diet" hasn't quite kicked in yet for you, and there's no reason you have to look a little less than impressive just because your waistline is slow to catch up (or down, as the case may be).

Anthropologie's Thisbe Dress is perfect for this January day. The dress is made of a navy blue wool jersey material with a charmeuse trim. The deep V-neckline plunges to waistline that releases into a cascade of pleats and falls to a sweet 36". The sleeves are the most charming part of the dress, slightly puffed, gathered, and ending in a tiny ruffle.

The dress is $328.

Dress of the Day: James Perse Long Sleeve Empire Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

james perse empire dressI'd like to take a moment to appreciate the person, the designer, the culture, whomever it was, who "invented" the empire waistline. Thanks to the waistline that gathers around the bottom of the bustline, high above the natural waistline, we ladies can breathe a little easier.

Whoever you are, thank you.

And thanks to James Perse for the Long Sleeve Empire Dress is a super-soft jersey material. The deep V neckline plunges to the empire waist, which is embellished with a contrast drawstring. Both the yoke and the ruching on the back of the dress contrast as well. The dress comes in a neautral color called Navajo, perfect as a backdrop for a pair of boots in a kick-start color.

The dress is $212 at ShopBop.

Dress of the Day: Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Empire Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

philosophy di alberta Ferretti empire dressIs it too early to start thinking about a Spring Fling?

I don't think so. And neither does Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti.

The beige Empire Dress by Philosophy de Alberta Ferretti featured wide, then knotted straps around a scoop neckline, gentle gathering at the empire waist, that gives way to a feminine scalloped trim, an A-line silhouette, and of course, large side patch pockets near a fairly high hem. Don't be afraid of the length (short?) of the dress -- it's meant for Spring, and if it's still chilly in March, you can wear a pair of ultra sheer shimmering tights.

The dress is $495 at Neiman Marcus.

Dress of the Day: Catherine Malandrino Pleated Empire Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

catherine malandrino pleated empire dress in walnutCatherine Malandrino takes two of the season's hottest trends and mashes them up into one gorgeous Pleated Empire Dress: babydoll silhouettes and metallics.

Though the dress is called "walnut," which, I am guessing, refers to the dark brown print and trim in the top, the rest of the dress is really a version of matte gold. The bodice has laser-cut detailing with a deep V-neckline that plunges all the way to the empire waist that's wrapped with a wide shiny sash. The skirt has a box pleat (though you can't tell from looking at the photo). I'd put on a pair of sheer tights with a gold sheen and slip into a pair of sky-high dark brown leather platforms with a pointed toe.

The dress is $501 at Revolve Clothing.

Dress of the Day: Ivy Jumper

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

ivy baby doll jumper in black satinThanksgiving is only four days away, and whether you're hosting or guest-ing, you've got to think about what to wear. Even if it's a family gathering, forget about going in that foda-coma-comfortable tracksuit -- there's bound to be pictures taken, and you 've got to look great. This week. we'll pick a few dresses that will do just that -- make you look great -- and give you room for second helpings. Maybe even thirds.

A jumper, while not my personal choice for dresses, is a good idea because there is absolutely no waistline to butt up against (pardon the pun). You don't have to look like you just stepped out of the BabyGap catalog with the Ivy Babydoll Jumper. It comes in four colors, the best of which is the shiny black satin, perfect for a Holiday spirit. Pair it with a lightweight long sleeve t-shirt, or a tanktop if it gets as warm in your house with all those people, like it does at mine.

The Ivy Babydoll Jumper is $285 at Intermix.
